  • Patent number: 6209039
Abstract: A system, method, and computer program product for providing a resilient network-to-network interface (RNNI) between a first frame relay network and a second frame relay network. The RNNI comprises a plurality of data links that connect a master node in the first network to a slave node in the second network. The RNNI is initialized by operating an independent instance of a Link Integrity Verification (LIV) routine on each of the data links, returning an UP or DOWN status. One of the data links is designated as the ACTIVE data link, and the remaining data links are designated as INACTIVE. Once the RNNI is initialized, the ACTIVE data link is monitored using RNNI link management procedures including the LIV routine and a Permanent Virtual Circuit (PVC) polling routine, and the INACTIVE data links are monitored using the LIV routine.

  • Patent number: 6205552
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of and apparatus for ascertaining system vulnerabilities of shareable devices, such as servers in a network, starting with only a list of all assigned addresses used by the system. A query is sent consecutively to each address on the list. Those addresses from which a response is not received are filtered from the list and used to generate an “unused” list. By checking the response received from the remaining addresses, non shareable devices may be ascertained and likewise filtered from the list while being used to generate a “non shareable” list. The remaining addresses thus all relate to shareable devices which can then be efficiently scanned for system vulnerabilities and a report generated as to data revealed when a report is desired.

  • Patent number: 6195347
Abstract: A system and method for implementing user-to-user data transfer services utilizes an overlay network to transfer user-to-user data between users independent of communications between the users on a conventional signaling network. The system and method examines a frame of data received from a user to determine whether the frame contains user-to-user data. If the frame does contain user-to-user data, the user-to-user data is removed from the frame and formatted for transfer. The formatted user-to-user data is then transferred to the recipient via the overlay network, independently of the communication between the users on the signaling network.

  • Patent number: 6005694
Abstract: A method and system for detecting optical signal degradation or loss within the optical domain of a fiber network. Optical cross-connect switches (OCCS) are provided at network nodes. Optical data traffic is conducted between nodes via a fiber link. The fiber link extends between respective ports of the optical cross-connect switches at each network node. Dedicated signals for detecting faults are introduced and removed within the optical domain of the fiber communication network. In one embodiment, transmitter/receiver units are coupled directly to the fiber link for broadcasting optical signals for fault detection. In another embodiment, transmitter/receiver units are coupled to the fiber link through one or more dedicated ports within optical cross-connect switches (OCCS) at network nodes. Optical signals for fault detection are then broadcast or switched through working and/or spare fibers. Distinctive optical fault detection signals are used when the signals are broadcast or switched over working fibers.

  • Patent number: 5978463
Abstract: An automated scheduling system schedules audio conferences for an audio conferencing system. The scheduling of an audio conference results in the reservation of audio conferencing resources for a designated time frame. The automated scheduling system identifies what audio conferencing resources are available during the designated time frame and then chooses optimal ones of the audio conferencing resources to achieve load balancing and to prevent overflow of an audio conference between conferencing bridges. A scoring mechanism may be applied to identify the optimal audio conferencing resources for a given audio conference. The automated scheduling system is capable of operating in real-time so that a caller that requests the scheduling of an audio conference may receive confirmation and a phone number to call to participate in the audio conference during a single phone call.

  • Patent number: 5894511
Abstract: A telephone system and method is provided for delaying authorization validation queries until a dialed phone is answered. This way, authorization validation queries are avoided in cases where a requested phone line is busy or not answered. In a collect call scheme the system may even delay queries until a party agrees to accept the collect call billing charges. This way, query charges are avoided not only for busy signals and no-answers, but also in the event that the requested party declines to accept the charges. Because authorization validation queries typically take less than one half of a second, parties are not significantly affected by the delay.

  • Patent number: 5872837
Abstract: A system and method for receiving data and commands from a telephone are described. The system receives a signal (such as a DTMF signal) from a telephone. The system identifies a symbol (i.e., a key) associated with the signal, and determines a duration of the signal. Then, the system stores the symbol and duration in a queue. The received signals are preferably processed by service processors. The service processors translate the received signals according to their respective symbols and durations with reference to a translation table. These service processors provide interactive telecommunication services to telephone users. Also described is a calculator service processor that provides a calculator service to telephone users. The calculator service processor translates some of the signals as operands, and others of the signals as operators. The calculator service processor preferably translates these received signals according to their respective symbols and durations.
