Patent number: 8661690Abstract: The invention relates to scissors and a sharpening device. The scissors include two blades, each blade having a cutting edge and a back edge which respectively form opposite longitudinal edges of the blade. A pivot connects the two blades for relative movement of the blades between an open condition in which the cutting edge of each blade are apart and a closed condition in which each blade are substantially adjacent and the back edge of each blade projects beyond the cutting edge of the other blade. The blades also include a sharpening condition in which the cutting edge of each of the blades can be sharpened. A biasing means is included for biasing the blades away from the sharpening condition towards the closed condition and/or the open condition. The sharpening device is for scissors including two blades having a cutting edge.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 2009Date of Patent: March 4, 2014Assignee: McPherson's LimitedInventors: Rosemary Murphy, Clive Solari

Patent number: 8590427Abstract: A housing including a honing device, a blade sharpener, a blade restraining mechanism, and a biased blade guide being received in a scabbard or a knife block. Wherein a knife is honed and sharpened upon insertion into the housing, or upon withdrawal from the housing, or both, and wherein the blade is retained within the housing after insertion therein.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 2010Date of Patent: November 26, 2013Assignee: McPherson's LimitedInventors: Rosemary Murphy, Clive Solari

Publication number: 20120297548Abstract: The present invention relates, in one aspect, to a cooking utensil including a functional member configured to engage a food item and a handle member extending from the functional member for gripping the utensil and for moving the functional member. The functional member includes a blade having a pair of opposite surfaces meeting at a pair of opposite lateral edges, one of the lateral edges being sharpened to form a cutting edge and the other one of the lateral edges including prongs and at least one of the planar surfaces having one or more recesses that do not pass entirely through the blade. In a preferred form, the one or more recesses include one or more concave depressions in the at least one of the planar surfaces.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 24, 2010Publication date: November 29, 2012Applicant: MCPHERSON'S LIMITEDInventor: Clive Solari

Publication number: 20120266468Abstract: The present invention relates to a device for containing one or more blades. In a preferred for, the device is a knife block for containing a plurality of knives. The device includes a housing having a plurality of openings, each opening for containing a respective blade therein. The device also includes a blade restraining mechanism including a restraining member having active and inactive conditions in that when a blade is inserted within one of the openings such that substantially an entire cutting edge of the blade is within the opening, in the active condition the restraining member prevents withdrawal of the blade from the opening and in the inactive condition the restraining member allows withdrawal of the blade from the opening.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 15, 2010Publication date: October 25, 2012Applicant: MCPHERSON'S LIMITEDInventors: Rosemary Murphy, Clive Solari

Publication number: 20120180602Abstract: The invention relates to a blade sharpening and storing device. The device includes a hollow housing for receiving and storing a blade and an access opening at an end of the housing through which the blade can be moved longitudinally to be inserted into or withdrawn from the housing. A blade sharpener is positioned to be engaged by a cutting edge of the blade when the blade is inserted into or withdrawn from the housing and which is responsive to movement of the blade relative to the housing to sharpen the cutting edge. A blade honing device positioned to be engaged by the cutting edge of the blade when the blade is inserted into or withdrawn from the housing and which is responsive to movement of the blade relative to the housing to hone the cutting edge. In another aspect, the invention relates to a blade storing device and blade combination. The blade includes opposite substantially parallel sides which meet at a cutting edge.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 22, 2010Publication date: July 19, 2012Applicant: MCPHERSON'S LIMITEDInventors: Rosemary Murphy, Clive Solari

Patent number: 6493947Abstract: The invention relates to scissors. Hitherto scissors have been formed with rigid and identical handles to allow use in either hand, but with some discomfort to the user, or with handles specifically shaped to suit a right-handed or a left-handed user, but not both. The object of the invention is to provide a pair of scissors able to be used in comfort by both right-handed and left-handed users, an objective met by a construction comprising blades and associated handles pivotally secured together, the handles forming respective finger and thumb bows that are symmetrical about the center plane at the mid-point through their thickness, at least one (thumb) bow being formed as a rigid structure from the forward end towards the pivot to a point along the length of that bow, from where the at least one (thumb) bow has a rearward part formed from a form-stable but resilient and/or flexible material.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 2001Date of Patent: December 17, 2002Assignee: McPherson's LimitedInventor: Andrew John Stokes

Patent number: 6117002Abstract: A blade sharpener having a sharpening mechanism that functions to sharpen a blade engaging the mechanism and being moved longitudinally relative to that mechanism. The sharpening mechanism is located within a hollow housing or scabbard for containing the blade, and means is provided to restrain the blade against inadvertent removal from the housing. The blade is moved into and out of the housing through a front end of the housing, and the restraining means becomes operative (automatically) when the blade is fully inserted. Locking means then functions to prevent release of the restraining means, and that locking means includes a plate movable in the longitudinal direction of the housing between locking and unlocking positions. The locking means is moved into the unlocking position by actuation of a press button located at the rear end of the housing, and automatically returns to the locking position when pressure is removed from the press button.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 1999Date of Patent: September 12, 2000Assignee: McPherson's LimitedInventors: Andrew John Stokes, George Ralph Adkins
