The rate of transfer of the patient can be made variable or fixed. The arrangement is adapted to function with a conventional bed normally used in a home, or with a hospital-type bed. During times when the patient is not being transferred, the arrangement may allow the mattress to be raised under the patient's head and back or under the patient's knees and legs.
