Patent number: 4202345Abstract: An apparatus for delivering and receiving gas to and from a patient, such as for lung ventilation studies. In accordance with the invention there is provided a restrictive breathing chamber adapted for coupling to the patient's breathing organs. A system, including a first check valve, is provided for coupling the breathing chamber to an inflatable gas receptacle so as to allow flow only toward the inflatable gas receptacle. Active gas input apparatus, including a second check valve, is also coupled to the breathing chamber, the second check valve allowing flow only toward the breathing chamber means. First and second auxiliary tubes and a gas filter are also provided. A system is provided for coupling the first auxiliary tube from the inflatable receptacle through the gas filter and to an ambient air environment. The second auxiliary tube is coupled from the inflatable receptacle to an ambient air environment.Type: GrantFiled: December 9, 1977Date of Patent: May 13, 1980Assignee: Medi-Ray, Inc.Inventors: Ralph Farella, Barry Dansky, Leonard Epifano

Patent number: 4200804Abstract: The invention is a system for transporting, storing, and injecting of radioactive isotopes, the system including a unit dose of radioactive isotope-containing fluid loaded in a disposable shielded syringe. There is provided a syringe body including a barrel and a plunger slideable in the barrel and extending from the rear of the barrel for manual actuation. A body of radiation-shielding material substantially covers the barrel, the body having a slot therein. A radiation-shielding unit is removably mounted over the slot. An aliquot of radioisotope-containing fluid is contained within the barrel. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, an optically-transparent radiation-shielding member is adapted for removable insertion over the slot. Before use of the syringe, the radiation-shielding unit, which provides protective shielding over the slot during shipping and storage, is removed and replaced by the optically transparent radiation-shielding member through which the user can view the syringe contents.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 1978Date of Patent: April 29, 1980Assignee: Medi-Ray, Inc.Inventors: Ralph Farella, Barry Dansky, Leonard Epifano

Patent number: 4060073Abstract: A syringe shield having an inner generally cylindrical shell formed of plastic material. The shell has an elongated slot extending longitudinally therein and is open-ended at its rear end and narrows radially inward at its front end to form a tapered portion. A generally cylindrical body formed of radiation-shielding material is proportioned such that its inner surface conforms generally to the outer surface of the inner shell. The body has an elongated slot therein which is aligned with the slot in the inner shell. An outer shell, formed of plastic material, conforms to the shape of the outer surface of the body and has an elongated slot aligned with the slots in the inner shell in the body. An elongated optically transparent radiation shielding member is proportioned to fit in the elongated slot in the body. In the preferred embodiment of the invention the inner shell has a plurality of flexible plastic protrusions on the inner surface thereof.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 1976Date of Patent: November 29, 1977Assignee: Medi-Ray, Inc.Inventors: Carl Collica, Leonard Epifano, Ralph Farella

Patent number: 4056729Abstract: An apparatus for housing radiation measuring material. First and second members having generally flat and opposing surfaces are provided, the members being joined with their surfaces in spaced relationship. The first surface has a plurality of circular recessed areas. The second surface has a plurality of recessed areas positionally aligned with the plurality of recessed areas in the first surface. A generally flat insert member is provided, the insert member proportioned to removably fit between the surfaces. The insert member has a plurality of circular apertures positionally aligned with the recessed areas, the apertures being adapted to removably receive and retain dosimetry discs. The recessed areas in the first and second surfaces are adapted to removably receive filter elements. The apparatus can be used for housing many of the various types of commercially available radiation measuring material.Type: GrantFiled: January 23, 1975Date of Patent: November 1, 1977Assignee: Medi-Ray, Inc.Inventors: Carl Collica, Leonard Epifano, Ralph Farella

Patent number: 4056096Abstract: A shielded syringe suitable for partial disposability. In accordance with the invention there is provided a syringe having a plastic barrel, a tip on the front of the barrel, and a plunger which extends from the rear of the barrel and is manually actuable. The syringe has volumetric indicia disposed in a longitudinal pattern along its barrel. A generally cylindrical body of radiation-shielding material covers the barrel of the syringe. The body has a slot therein which is in registration with at least some of the indicia. A plastic shell of generally cylindrical shape covers the radiation-shielding body and the shell has a slot which is in registration with the slot in the radiation-shielding body. A transparent radiation-shielding member, such as a rectangular leaded-glass member, is proportioned to generally conform in size to the slot in the body and is removably insertible therein. Finally, manually actuable means are provided for retaining the radiation-shielding member in the body.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 1976Date of Patent: November 1, 1977Assignee: Medi-Ray, Inc.Inventors: Carl Collica, Leonard Epifano, Ralph Farella

Patent number: 3984696Abstract: A radiation guard suitable for use in conjunction with a diagnostic table and penetrable by the hands of an operator to facilitate moving or examining a patient positioned on a table. In accordance with the invention there is provided a supportive frame mountable at about an edge of the table so as to extend vertically from about the edge, the frame comprising at least a pair of spaced bars. A plurality of strips of flexible radiation shielding material are mounted across the bars in closely spaced relationship, the strips being mounted sufficiently close together to prevent substantial radiation leakage through the frame. The hands of an operator can be inserted between the adjacent strips to manually reposition or examine a patient while protecting most of the operator's body from substantial radiation.Type: GrantFiled: December 11, 1974Date of Patent: October 5, 1976Assignee: Medi-Ray, Inc.Inventors: Carl Collica, Leonard Epifano, Ralph Farella

Patent number: 3984695Abstract: Radiation shielding apparatus for use in conjunction with a pad on a table. The apparatus comprises a set of units, each unit comprising a pair of joined substantially flat orthogonal flaps. The flaps are formed of a radiation shielding material and are adapted for removable placement under the pad whereby one flap contacts the table and the other flap extends vertically from an edge thereof. In a preferred embodiment of the invention the set consists of five units that provide protection around three sides of a rectangular table. In this embodiment, two of the units are identical and have asymmetrical trapezoidal flaps, and two others of the units are also identical, but have trapezoidal flaps which are of reversed orientation with respect to the first-mentioned two units.Type: GrantFiled: January 6, 1975Date of Patent: October 5, 1976Assignee: Medi-Ray, Inc.Inventors: Carl Collica, Leonard Epifano, Ralph Farella
