Patent number: 6117285Abstract: An apparatus for electrolyzing fluids. The resulting electrolyzed fluids are particularly suited for treating physiological materials such as whole blood, plasma, or cell isolates in order to reduce the effect of harmful microorganisms. A container holds the fluid and a power supply provides a source of electrical current to an anode and a cathode positioned within the container. The system is particularly suited for disinfecting and/or sterilizing health care instruments. The instruments are bathed in the electrolyzed saline solution. If the instrument includes internal conduits the system of the present invention also preferably flows the electrolyzed saline solution through such conduits also to provide both cleaning and sterilization. The electrolyzed saline solution is recirculated from the electrodes to the instrument being sterilized. Embodiments of the invention are particularly suited to sterilizing dental drill handpieces without damage to the handpieces.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 1997Date of Patent: September 12, 2000Assignee: Medical Discoveries, Inc.Inventors: William D. Welch, Daniel L. Robinson

Patent number: 6007686Abstract: An apparatus for electrolyzing fluids is disclosed. The anode and cathode each comprise a cylindrical shape. The cathode is positioned concentrically in relation to the anode. The spacing between the cathode and the anode is not greater than a preferred amount. Moreover, the voltage potential between the cathode and the anode is not greater than a preferred amount. Also described is a system for disinfecting and/or sterilizing health care instruments. The instruments are bathed in the electrolyzed saline solution.Type: GrantFiled: April 16, 1996Date of Patent: December 28, 1999Assignee: Medical Discoveries, Inc.Inventors: William D. Patent number: 5731008Abstract: A microbiocidal solution for in vivo and in vitro treatment of microbial infections contains an electrolyzed saline containing regulated amounts of ozone and active chlorine species wherein the ozone content is between about 5 and 100 mg/L and the active chlorine species content of between about 5 and 300 ppm. The active chlorine species contains free chlorine, hypochlorous acid and the hypochlorite ion as measured by a chlorine selective electrode. The solution is prepared by subjecting a 1% or less saline to electrolysis under conditions sufficient to produce the desired active ingredients. The solution is preferably utilized at an isotonic saline concentration and may be adjusted with hypertonic saline. The solution may be used for the in vitro treatment of infected whole blood, blood cells or plasma to reduce contamination and is effective in treatment of fluids infected with HIV, hepatitis and other viral, bacterial and fungal agents.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 1996Date of Patent: March 24, 1998Assignee: Medical Discoveries, Inc.Inventor: Robert E. The ozone content is 5 to 100 mg/L (milligram per liter) and the chlorine species content is 5 to 300 parts per million (ppm). The active chlorine species comprises free chlorine, hypochlorous acid and the hypochlorite ion as measured by a chlorine selective electrode. The solution is prepared by subjecting a 1% or less saline to electrolysis under conditions sufficient to produce the active ingredients. The solution is used at an isotonic saline concentration and my be adjusted with hypertonic saline. The solution is used in vitro treatments of infected whole blood, blood cells or plasma to reduce contamination. The solution may also be administered to warm blooded animals, including humans by intravenous injection.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: October 7, 1997Assignee: Medical Discoveries, Inc.Inventor: Robert E. Patent number: 5560816Abstract: An apparatus for electrolyzing fluids is disclosed. The anode comprises a base material selected from titanium and niobium. An outer layer of platinum is bonded to the base. The anode comprises a cylindrical shape. The cathode is also connected to the power supply and comprises titanium and has a substantially cylindrical shape. The cathode is positioned concentrically in relation to the anode. The spacing between the cathode and the anode is not greater than a preferred amount. Moreover, the voltage potential between the cathode and the anode is not greater than a preferred amount.Type: GrantFiled: February 16, 1996Date of Patent: October 1, 1996Assignee: Medical Discoveries, Inc.Inventor: Daniel L. Patent number: 5334383Abstract: A method of treating antigen related infections is disclosed which comprises subjecting a dilute normal saline solution to electrical hydrolysis with adequate voltage to produce a solution containing bioactive microbicidal atoms, radicals or ions selected from the group consisting of chloride , ozone, hydroxide, hypochlorite, peroxide, chlorine dioxide, and oxygen with corresponding amounts of molecular hydrogen and sodium and hydrogen ions. The solution is balanced to normal saline with hypertonic saline. The injecting of effective amounts of the balanced solution intravenously into a warm blooded animal affected by an antigenic related infection results in a microbicidal action which mimics or enhances action of the free radicals produced in vivo as a result of respiratory bursts.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 1990Date of Patent: August 2, 1994Assignee: Medical Discoveries, Inc.Inventor: Robert E.
