Publication number: 20090221975Abstract: A medical valve can be attached to the front of a needle containing syringe or other needle containing medical device and can be operated between an open and closed position with the needle extending through the valve. A backflow prevention mechanism can be provided. The valve can be used with auto retracting needles.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 21, 2006Publication date: September 3, 2009Applicant: MEDIGARD LIMITEDInventor: Aaron Leonard Rodd

Patent number: 7544169Abstract: A blood collection device comprises an open ended syringe like housing into which a vacutainer can be inserted. The front of the device contains a needle holder and a double ended needle. The needle holder is attached to the device in a special manner that enables the needle holder to be decoupled and retracted into the device but only after the vacutainer has been removed and a separate needle retraction device has been inserted into the open end of the housing and pushed against the inner end of the needle holder. The needle retraction device comprises a hollow body which is under vacuum and which has an open end closed by a piston. The piston is of a special design that functions to decouple the needle holder from the blood collection device and to lock to the needle holder and at the same time to be decoupled from the hollow body the result of which is that the piston containing the needle holder and the attached contaminated needle is sucked back into the hollow body to render the needle safe.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 2005Date of Patent: June 9, 2009Assignee: Medigard LimitedInventors: Don Channer, Aaron Rodd

Publication number: 20090137963Abstract: A medical device having a main body, an actuator and a needle, the needle able to be retracted into the main body, the main body having a chamber which is under reduced pressure or can be placed under reduced pressure, the needle attached or attachable to a retraction member movable between a forward position with the needle extending from the main body and a retracted position with the needle within the main body, the retraction member additionally movable between a held position preventing retraction and a release position where rotation of the actuator allows the retraction member to be retracted into the vacuum chamber by the reduced pressure of the chamber.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 16, 2006Publication date: May 28, 2009Applicant: MEDIGARD LIMITEDInventor: Aaron Rodd

Publication number: 20080161760Abstract: A needle containing medical device is provided with a mechanism to enable the needle to be sucked back into the main body of the device after use. The medical device contains a chamber that can be depressurised on demand to create the vacuum prior to use to enable the needle to be sucked back into the main body. Thus, the medical device can be stored and transported with the chamber under ordinary (atmospheric) pressure and the vacuum can be created on demand and just before use. Advantage—the medical device is not constantly under vacuum so the problem of slow loss of vacuum during storage is overcome.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 15, 2005Publication date: July 3, 2008Applicant: MEDIGARD LIMITEDInventor: Donald J Channer
