  • Patent number: 5791388
Abstract: A method of controlling the feed of the backup rolls of a log backup apparatus for use in a veneer lathe for preventing a log from bowing while veneer is peeled from the log. The method comprises the step of centripetally feeding the backup rolls from a control-start diameter .PHI. at a provisional feed rate f which is higher than a predetermined feed rate F by a feed rate of a pre-selected correction value .alpha. per log rotation. The aforementioned control-start diameter .PHI. is slightly larger than the diameter of the log at which the backup rolls are brought into contact with the log. The method further comprises the steps of stopping the centripetal feeding of the backup rolls at the provisional feed rate f when the bowing is eliminated from the log and thereafter centripetally feeding the backup rolls at the predetermined feed rate F, thereby eliminating the bowing that occurs during the veneer peeling from the log.

  • Patent number: 5662151
Abstract: A method of fixing an adjusting bolt of a veneer peeling knife which is usually performed after adjusting the knife in a knife setting gauge to position its cutting edge at a desired height. The adjusting bolt is fixed by forcing the adjusting bolt by a fixing member in such a direction that the advancing side flank of the external thread of the adjusting bolt is kept in pressed contact with the lower side flank of the internal thread of a threaded hole formed in the knife bottom and receiving therein the adjusting bolt by thread engagement. The fixing member may be provided by a rigid member disposed below the knife bottom surface and formed with a threaded hole through which the adjusting bolt is inserted by thread engagement so that forcing the fixing member upward by a pressing member such as a bolt in a direction that effects the pressed contact between the above two flanks fixes the adjusting bolt securely to place. The fixing member is provided by any suitable resilient material such as silicon rubber.

  • Patent number: 5653430
Abstract: A veneer hoisting apparatus in which at the hoisting of a veneer by a piercing body, the decrease in sustaining force applied to the veneer by the piercing body is prevented, and it rarely happens that the veneer drops down from the piercing body. With the construction of the piercing body 7 and a sustaining member 9, when the veneer is hoisted through the piercing body 7, although the central portion side of the veneer 5 in the direction of its fiber is hung down about the root of the piercing body 7 which pierces the veneer as a fulcrum, and the end side thereof is curved upward, no fulcrum occurs at a position apart from the root of the piercing body in the direction of the fiber of the veneer.

  • Patent number: 5564253
Abstract: The method of the present invention realizes accurate control of the feed rate in a veneer lathe under a centerless condition and improves the productivity of the veneer lathe. After spindles (8a) are moved away and disengaged from the axial ends of a log (11), that is, under the centerless condition, the method of the invention controls the feed rate of a knife carriage (9) based on the current rotating speed of the log (11), which is measured by a speed measuring device (7) engaged with the periphery of the log (11). When a difference between the current rotating speed of the log (11) measured by the speed measuring device (7) and a theoretical rotating speed of the log (11) driven by a peripheral drive system (2) exceeds a preset level, the method of the present invention stops the feeding operation of knife carriage (9) and thereby the veneer peeling operation of the veneer lathe.

  • Patent number: 5427368
Abstract: A belt conveyor is provided to feed veneers in the arrow-marked direction in the drawing. A porous transfer belt having numerous of air holes therein is stretched around so as to run above said belt conveyor. Inside the porous transfer belt, a suction hood which has a plurality of small air passages formed in the running direction of the porous conveyor belt is installed to rotatably accommodate a damper further therewithin. The damper makes intermittent rotations to open or close the sucking section such that only a desired veneer is selectively sucked for sort-out transfer with the result that the need for piercing the veneer or defining in advance a gap between each adjacent two veneers is eliminated. Therefore, it is now possible to perform high speed sort-out operations without subjecting the veneer to damage or breakage resulting from tensile strength exerted thereon at the time of defining the gap.

  • Patent number: 5417637
Abstract: A knife changing method is disclosed which is applicable to a veneer lathe equipped with a knife carriage to which a veneer peeling knife is clamped with its cutting edge set at a predetermined elevation relative to the knife carriage. The knife carriage is shiftable to at least one knife changing position and the lathe has formed in at least one of its side frames a knife passage adjacent the knife changing position of the carriage. In the knife changing operation, the knife carriage is firstly shifted to its knife changing position, where an old knife is released from the knife carriage by undoing knife clamps. The freed knife is laterally moved away from the veneer lathe through the knife passage in the side frame. Then, a new, or reground knife is moved laterally into the veneer lathe through the knife passage to a predetermined knife installing position on the knife carriage, where the new knife is fixed to the carriage by activating the knife clamps.

  • Patent number: 5329978
Abstract: The invention provides an improved planar which effectively prevents undesirable torn grain. The planer of the invention includes at least one planer knife or blade and at least one pressing member, both attached to and supported on a cutterhead. The pressing member includes a head element which is located to have a predetermined angle with respect to the blade and is resiliently movable in a predetermined direction to press an edge of the head element against a certain position of a wood surface immediately before a cutting edge of the blade moving in a fixed direction for cutting or against a boundary between the wood surface and a chip being currently cut from the wood surface. The direct pressing of the pressing member against the wood surface prevents rise of wood fibers and thereby effectively reduces or eliminates undesirable torn or chipped grain.

  • Patent number: 5234040
Abstract: A veneer dehydrating apparatus is disclosed. The apparatus includes a pair of rolls disposed so as to form a nip between the peripheries thereof through which a green veneer sheet is passed. At least one of the rolls has on its periphery a number of tooth-like projections separated from one another by grooves formed on the roll periphery. Each projection is pierceable into a veneer sheet to squeeze out part of water contained in the veneer sheet by compression exerted thereto by the projection piercing thereinto. The toothed roll has an elastic filler member fitted round the roll so as to fill the spaces between the projection. The elastic filler member comprises an elastic portion made of, e.g., sponge rubber and a reinforcement portion made of, e.g., fabric and secured to one surface of the elastic portion and seated firmly against the radially innermost surface of the grooves.

  • Patent number: 5141038
Abstract: An apparatus for controlling the knife carriage feed is disclosed herein which is applicable to a centerless type veneer lathe wherein a peeler log is driven to rotate by peripheral drive system without use of conventional spindles. The apparatus includes a roll which is engageable with the peripheral surface of a log to be rotated thereby for measuring the current log peripheral speed and a device connected to a carriage feeding screw for monitoring the current log diameter. The knife carriage feed is effected in accordance with the log rotational speed which is determined by the current log diameter and the current log peripheral speed so that a veneer knife on the carriage cuts into the log peripheral surface for a predetermined distance for each turn of said log.
