Patent number: 5282784Abstract: A stent for assistance in draining urine from the kidney into the bladder through the ureter which may be partially or totally occluded. The stent has the capability to selectively inject a liquid, such as a dye, into the renal system. The stent is fabricated from a biocompatible tube, preferably of silicone rubber. The proximal and distal ends of the tube are preformed into a pigtail or other shape to secure in the renal and bladder cavities, respectively. The proximal and distal ends of the tube are perforated to provide for ingress and egress of the urine. During the implantation procedure, a guide wire is first advanced to provide a path for positioning the stent. The stent is advanced over the guide wire by pushing with a multiple diameter injection catheter. The smaller diameter proximal end of the injection catheter is positioned within the distal end of the stent at a predetermined fixed distance which occludes the distal perforations.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 1991Date of Patent: February 1, 1994Assignee: Mentor CorporationInventor: Martin R. Patent number: 5167611Abstract: A penile prosthesis with a two piece inflatable cylinder that provides significant lengthwise expansion of a male penis. The cylinder has an inflatable bellows attached to an inflatable member and a sheath that extends from a base member. The bellows is attached to the base member and the sheath is connected to the inflatable member, such that the sheath will stretch when the bellows is inflated. The sheath surrounds the bellows. The sheath is constructed from an elastic material that can expand up to 100% of its original length. The inflatable member and bellows are connected to a pump which transfers fluid between a reservoir and the cylinder. When fluid is pumped into the cylinder, the bellows and inflatable member are inflated and the sheath is expanded, allowing the inflatable member to move into an elongated position. When the cylinder is inflated the sheath is in tension, wherein the sheath will pull the inflatable member back into a compact position when the bellows is deflated.Type: GrantFiled: July 22, 1991Date of Patent: December 1, 1992Assignee: Mentor CorporationInventor: Timothy Cowan

Patent number: 5067485Abstract: A technique for the treatment of male impotence. The apparatus to be implanted in the corpus cavernosum of the penis is a cylinder of an implantable polymer. The cylinder is generally flexible and has a plurality of transitions from a lesser diameter to a greater diameter. As the cylinder is filled with fluid under pressure, the areas of lesser diameter tend to expand, thereby effectively lengthening the cylinder without an unacceptable increase in girth. Optional rings may be positioned over the areas of lesser diameter to prevent collapse. An optional outer sheath also improves longitudinal stability.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 1990Date of Patent: November 26, 1991Assignee: Mentor CorporationInventor: Timothy B. Cowen

Patent number: 5063914Abstract: An apparatus for the treatment of male impotence. The apparatus has a cylinder of a biocompatible polymer which is implanted in the corpus cavernosum of the penis. The cylinder is attached at its proximal end to a base mount which is implanted in the pelvic area. In the flaccid state, the cylinder is empty and limp, and a spring within the cylinder folds the cylinder wall in upon itself to decrease its effective length. Fluid is pumped into the cylinder causing it to stiffen in the erect state. The effective length of the cylinder is increased by the addition of the fluid which compresses the internal spring and unfolds the cylinder. In this manner, the length of the penis is increased from the flaccid to the erect state.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 1990Date of Patent: November 12, 1991Assignee: Mentor CorporationInventor: Timothy B. Patent number: 5062417Abstract: A penile prosthesis employing an improved pump and valve system. The main body of the prosthesis has at least one inflatable polymer cylinder suitable for implantation within the corpus cavernosum of the male patient. The penis of the patient is rendered erect by pumping a sterile fluid into the inflatable polymer cylinder(s) under adequate pressure. The sterile fluid is supplied from a reservoir and pump implanted within the scrotum of the patient which are linked to the inflatable polymer cylinder(s) by flexible tubing. The reservoir is a relatively low pressure flexible polymer bag of relatively large volume. Coupled to the reservoir by a valved diaphragm is a pump having only much less flexible walls and a relatively small volume.Manual squeezing of the reservoir forces sterile fluid through the valved diaphragm into the pump chamber.Type: GrantFiled: October 10, 1990Date of Patent: November 5, 1991Assignee: Mentor CorporationInventor: Timothy B. Patent number: 4890866Abstract: There is disclosed a connector for attachment of flexible plastic tubing which is most compatible with filament reinforced tubing which resists elastic expansion. The connector has a central radial flange with opposite cylindrical ends which provide mandrels to receive adjacent ends of tubing. A cylindrical cage surrounds the cylindrical ends and supports chuck members. A pair of collet members are provided which slide over the tubing and the chuck members, compressing the chuck members radially inwardly without axial movement of the chuck members relative to the tubing. This deflects the chuck members into the wall of the tubing, thereby locking the tubing securely onto the mandrel. The collet member has an internal annular groove on its inside wall which receives an outer edge of the chuck members, thereby serving as a detent or interlock to resist the retraction of the collet member once it is moved into final position.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 1989Date of Patent: January 2, 1990Assignee: Mentor CorporationInventor: Robert A.
