    Abstract: A refrigerant fluid is placed within a driveline component, and in particular an axle housing. This refrigerant fluid is received within a sealed reservoir such that it is sealed from the typical lubricant in the driveline component. The lubricant heats the refrigerant through a housing such that the refrigerant vaporizes within the driveline component housing, thus cooling the lubricant. The vaporized refrigerant travels to a cooling chamber mounted remotely from the reservoir. The cooled refrigerant is cooled to a liquid state, and then returned to the reservoir. Preferably the cooling chamber is positioned on the vehicle frame vertically above the driveline component.

    Abstract: A unique structure for connecting the cross member of a universal joint to two yokes includes at least a pair of wing bearings bolted to one of the yokes. Preferably, the other yoke utilizes full circular bores to receive the other two shafts of the cross member. The wing bearings include structure which ensures a secure connection to the yoke. In particular, a locator finger extends radially inwardly from the yoke and over the wing bearing and shaft. In this way, the distance between a reaction plane between the yoke and wing bearing and the centerline of the shaft within the wing bearing is reduced. This reduces a force moment on the shaft. In other features of this invention, the use of the full circular bore for one of the yokes allows the universal joint manufacturer to fully assemble the first yoke to the cross member, and ship that assembled yoke and cross member to the vehicle manufacturer.

By mounting the driveline components, rigid axles, and suspension as an integral module, the components are replaced or serviced by replacement of the entire module. Thus, the individual mounting, replacement and servicing of the individual components, each having multiple independent attachment points, is avoided.

    Abstract: A data logging system includes a data logging unit, a primary power source, an auxiliary power source and a controller. The controller detects whether the primary power source is available or unavailable and the time at which it became available or unavailable. From the time data the controller will then determine the total time the primary power source was unavailable to power the system. The controller adjusts or increases a predetermined auxiliary power source value by the auxiliary power source usage time period. Upon each occurrence in which the primary power source again becomes unavailable, the controller performs the same operations and further adjust or increases the previously reduced predetermined auxiliary power source value by the next auxiliary power source usage time period. Adjusting or increasing the predetermined auxiliary power source value will continue until a predetermined value is reached which triggers an alert. The alert indicates to an operator that the system requires service.

In another embodiment, the suspension system includes an additional lateral support member which provides a rigid square-shaped suspension system which further increases rigidity.

    Abstract: A operating system for slider locking pins includes an air compressor connected to an air supply tank. An air pressure protection valve is connected to the air tank to protect the brake system of the trailer. A flipper valve is connected to the air pressure protection valve and provides selective fluid communication between the air tank and a plurality of locking pin driver assemblies. Each locking pin driver assembly is adapted to move a locking pin to a disengaged position when in fluid communication with the air tank while being adapted to move the locking pin to the engaged position when not in fluid communication with the air tank. Each driver assembly is configured to substantially provide protection to each of its elements from adverse weather conditions and articles thrown up from the road. In one embodiment, the driver assembly includes a fixed bracket attached to the frame of the sliding undercarriage. A traveling bracket is connected to a locking pin.

    Abstract: A vehicle suspension assembly is provided that includes a vehicle frame. A suspension member is pivotally supported on a portion of the frame. A torsion bar having a longitudinal axis and first and second opposing ends is supported between the vehicle frame and a suspension member by its ends. The torsion bar is twisted about the longitudinal axis in response to the suspension member pivoting relative to the frame. Resin coated reinforcing fibers are secured to the exterior surface of the torsion bar at an angle relative to the longitudinal axis. The torsion bar may be hollow to reduce the weight of the torsion bar. The resin coated carbon fibers are cured to the exterior surface by an oven or by induction heating.

The portable handheld computing device sends the vehicle preferences to the vehicle control module through the data link to control the vehicle component. The vehicle preferences are sent by IR, RF, or any other suitable means. The system may be used to control an HVA system, for example.

    Abstract: A steer axle for a heavy duty vehicle is provided including an axle assembly having an axle housing. A steer knuckle is connected to an end portion of the axle housing by king pins. The steer knuckle rotates relative to the axle housing about the king pins. A wheel end assembly including a brake drum and a pair of brake shoes is supported on an outer wall of the steer knuckle. Preferably, one end of a cam shaft is supported by the wheel end assembly, such as by a spindle. According to the present invention, the steer knuckle includes a boss extending from a portion of the steer knuckle. The boss includes a hole, and preferably, a bushing is received in the hole to support the other end of the cam shaft. Other brake components such as an air chamber, rod, and a brake adjuster are supported by the knuckle and connected to the cam shaft to rotate the cam shaft about its axis and force the brake shoes away from one another with a cam and into engagement with the brake drum.

The trunnion assembly in installed on a lower control arm assembly, a pair of cap screw apertures on the bushing block aligning with a pair of cap screw apertures on the lower control arm assembly. Cap screws are installed therein. Grease grooves are formed on the interior surface of the bushing block to allow grease to flow down the exterior surface of the trunnion pin, eliminating additional machining on the trunnion pin.

    Abstract: A grease lock seal with sealing lips angled inwardly towards the internal bearing components is press fit into a bearing cup assembly to prevent grease from being purged due to centrifugal forces introduced during the rotational operation of the system. As the plurality of sealing lips retain grease in the system, the system does not have to be re-greased. If one desires to re-grease the system, the grease lock seal can further include a plurality of grease purge channels which create a path for used grease to be purged. As internal pressure increases during regreasing, the used grease flows through the grease purge channels and out of the system. However, the grease purge channels are small enough so that grease does not escape from the system during normal operation.

    Abstract: A method and system for determining axle misaligned and tire wear of a vehicle monitors lateral and vertical acceleration values. Lateral and vertical acceleration data for each axle is taken and this data is put into an equation. A ratio of the data for one axle divided by the data of another axle is calculated. If this ratio tends towards 1.0 the axles are more in alignment with respect to each other and there is likely less tire wear. As the ratio tends away from 1.0 the axles are more misaligned with respect to each other and there is likely more tire wear. The standard deviations of the vertical accelerations are also put into a ratio and can be used to predict how much wear the tires on one axle are experiencing as compared to the tires on the other axle. A gauge or monitoring device may be used to monitor the values to determine misalignment and predict tire wear. The monitoring device may send alignment and tire wear signals to a display, which indicates axle misalignment and tire wear of the vehicle.
