Patent number: 6976832Abstract: A fluid rotary machine (10) includes an inner housing (12) provided with a manifold (68) for directing working fluid through the machine (10) and an outer housing (14) coupled to the inner housing (12) so that the outer housing (14) can rotate relative to the inner housing (12). A plurality of swinging gates (16) are supported along one longitudinal edge in corresponding sockets (38) formed along the inner circumferential surface (32) of outer housing (14). A plurality of elongated lobes (30) are supported on and evenly spaced about the inner housing (12). There is one intake port (24) and one exhaust port (26) between adjacent lobes (30). The gates (16) are biased so as to ordinarily seal against the inner housing (12). High pressure fluid enters through the inlet port (24) to a region between a lobe (30) and gate (16) causing the outer housing (14) to rotate. Eventually the gate (16) wipes across an exhaust port (26) venting the high pressure fluid through the exhaust port.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 2000Date of Patent: December 20, 2005Assignee: Merlin Corporation Pty. Ltd.Inventors: Daryl Wheeler, Lui Lau, Ben Dyktynski

Patent number: 6939117Abstract: A rotary machine (10) comprises an inner housing (12) having valving means (14) which includes a shaft (15) for directing working fluid through the machine (10) and, an outer housing (16) within which the inner housing resides. A working chamber (18) is defined between the inner and outer housings (12 and 16). A plurality of gates (20) are supported by the inner housing and are swingable along their respective longitudinal axis between a sealing position in which the gates form a seal against surface (22) of outer housing (16) and a retracted position in which the gates (20) lie substantially against surface (24) of the housing (12).Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 2000Date of Patent: September 6, 2005Assignee: Merlin Corporation Pty LtdInventors: Daryl Wheeler, Raalin Wheeler, Benjamin Dytynski

Patent number: 6468061Abstract: A rotary hydraulic machine (10) for incorporation in a drill string (92) of a well formation (86). The machine (10) is particularly adapted to act as a motor and includes an outer housing (11) of a generally cylindrical configuration having a radial inner surface (12). Rotatably mounted within the housing (11) is a shaft assembly (13) including a shaft (14) upon which a stator (15) is mounted. The stator (15) includes a plurality of lobes (16) which have a maximum radius approximately equal to the radius of the surface (12). A plurality of gates (35) are radially movably mounted in the housing (11) and engage the stator (15). The shaft (14) is hollow to provide for the delivery and the removal of hydraulic fluid to the working chambers (45 and 46) of the machine (10).Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 2001Date of Patent: October 22, 2002Assignee: Merlin Corporation Pty Ltd.Inventors: Benjamin Francis Dyktynski, Daryl Wheeler, Lui Lau
