Patents Assigned to Merz & Co.
  • Patent number: 4323548
Abstract: A spermicidally-active vaginal suppository consisting essentially of a solid water-soluble polymeric material which melts at body temperature, for example, a polyethylene glycol, having dispersed therein minor amounts of a spermicide, for example, p-nonylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol, a foaming agent operative when the suppository is dissolved in aqueous media to generate a foam-forming gas, for example, a mixture of a water-soluble bicarbonate and a solid weak acid, and a foam-stabilizing agent which is characterized by containing a surfactant, which is effective to reduce the surface tension of water to less than 45 dynes per centimeter, for example, sodium lauryl sulfate, and lactalbumin.

  • Patent number: 4273774
Abstract: The present application relates to compositions which influence the central nervous system and which are especially useful in the treatment of hyperkinesis and rigidity. These compositions contain as active ingredient 1,3-dimethyl-5-aminoadamantane in the form of the free base or a pharmaceutically-acceptable salt thereof, together with a methylxanthine compound, e.g., caffeine or theophylline, in an amount up to about fifteen milligrams of the methylxanthine compound per each milligram of the 1,3-dimethyl-5-aminoadamantane compound. These compositions are useful in the treatment of central nervous system disorders, particularly of Parkinson's disease, depressions, spasticity, rigidity, hyperkinesis, and the like. The compositions possess unpredictable beneficial properties of a synergistic nature. The application also relates to the treatment of such central nervous system ailments or conditions with a combination of the said two active agents either concurrently or together in the same dosage form or unit.

  • Patent number: 4051143
Abstract: The application discloses a novel improved process for the production of .alpha.-[2-(p-chlorophenoxy)-isobutyl]-.beta.-nicotinoyl glycol ester, a known compound having a lipid-lowering effect, by the reaction of .alpha.-[2-chlorophenoxy)-isobutyryl]-.beta.-ethyl chloride ester with an alkali salt of nicotinic acid, preferably sodium nicotinate, preferably in a high-boiling polar or dipolar aprotic solvent, especially dimethylformamide, most preferably at a temperature of about 120.degree. - 180.degree. C., and most advantageously in refluxing dimethylformamide. An unpredictable increase in yields of the desired product over yields attainable by previously-available processes is thereby obtained.

  • Patent number: 4003070
Abstract: A pair of drums is mounted for rotation about at least substantially parallel axes which are located in a common plane. The drums form with one another an axial gap and bodies or walls are located adjacent to the drums and define with the circumferential walls thereof a first channel section which surrounds the circumference of the drums at least in the region of the gap at one side of the plane, and a second channel section which surrounds the circumference of the drums at least in the region of the gap at the other side of the plane. The channel sections merge with one another in the gap. An arrangement is provided for circulating a treating fluid through the channel sections and into the interior of the respective drums and a feeding arrangement feeds the photographic material into the channel sections so that it sequentially moves through the first and thereupon through the second channel section and becomes treated by contact with the treating fluid.
