  • Patent number: 4851858
Abstract: A reflector antenna is constructed for operation in at least two frequency ranges. For this purpose the concave surface of the antenna reflector body, which preferably has a paraboloid configuration, is provided with surface zones arranged in regular arrays or patterns. These surface zones provide antenna or reflector elements which are reflecting or transparent with regard to a particular frequency range or band width, while other surface zones of the antenna reflector surface are transparent or reflecting in another given frequency range or band widths. Thus, depending on the configurations and dimensions of these different surface zones one and the same antenna is capable of handling frequencies in a plurality of different band widths and different apertures.

  • Patent number: 4836024
Abstract: An impact sensor for detecting a collision of a motor vehicle or the like has at least two acceleration detectors, and a signal evaluating circuit for each detector for evaluating the output signals of the respective acceleration detectors. The evaluated signals are passed through a logic signal interpreting circuit to provide a control signal for triggering passive safety devices such as an inflatable air bag. In order to trigger the passive safety devices as quickly as possible in response to an impact or collision, and in order to determine the angular direction of the impact, several acceleration detectors having oriented sensitivity axes are provided, whereby the sensitivity axes of separate detectors are oriented in different directions. The signal evaluation and interpretation to provide the triggering signal make sure that only determined output signals of the acceleration detectors cause the intended triggering preferably only for frontal impact collisions.

  • Patent number: 4836473
Abstract: The pressure drag on the skin of an aircraft is reduced by rigidly securing boundary layer influencing members to the skin of the aircraft, including the wings, the elevantor and fin/rudder assemblies, and the body near the tail end. These members may be vortex generators and boundary layer diverters and are always located in the attached flow. In addition, if the members are placed upstream of any air intakes, especially flush air intakes, the air intake efficiency is also improved. The influencing members have an effective height above the surface corresponding, at the most, to the displacement thickness portion of the boundary layer.

  • Patent number: 4829784
Abstract: In a method and system for storing gas, especially an inert gas for elect impulse space drives which use inert gas as a reaction mass, the inert gas is filled into a storage tank in the gaseous and/or liquid state and is then cooled to solidify it into the solid state in which it is then stored. While in the earth's atmosphere, temperature regulation is achieved by means of thermal insulation of the tank and a convective heat exchange between a cryogenic coolant and the inert gas in the tank. While in the vacuum of space, temperature regulation is achieved by means of radiant heat exchange between the tank and deep space. For extracting the gas from the tank, the frozen gas is locally sublimated from the solid to the gaseous state by a controlled localized heat application, whereby the required gas pressure is developed for withdrawing gas from the tank which holds the gas in the solid state, except at a heated outlet area.

  • Patent number: 4821636
Abstract: A cable bundle is lifted off the nail board for presentation to a binding or lashing tool. The lifting is accomplished by a claw which has two claw members, one is spring biased and initially slightly lifts the bundle off the nail board. The other claw member is driven by a motor to first come into engagement with the other claw and then to further lift the bundle. The lifting and presenting claw mechanism and a binding and lashing mechanism are both carried by a robot arm closely spaced to each other for cooperation. Both devices can be operated in response to a computer program control. Due to the lifting and presenting of the bundle, the binding can be performed automatically without the need for any spacers between the nail board and the conductor bundle.

  • Patent number: 4812019
Abstract: For producing the first differential of a two-dimensional optical image, an image of electrical charges corresponding to the brightness distribution of the image is produced in a first layer of an optical structural element. The first, electrical charges storing layer includes a plurality of light sensitive detector elements arranged in a mosaic-type pattern (D.sub.i). The electrical charge image representing the brightness distribution is converted into a transmissivity or transparency distribution corresponding to the potential differences across said detector elements in the first layer, by a second layer made of a material (M) that is electro-optically modulatable for changing the transparency or degree of transparency.

  • Patent number: 4811540
Abstract: A fiber reinforced shell structure of synthetic material has an outer skin supported on a skeleton of longitudinal stringers interconnected by ribs. The stringers have a channel cross-section filled with a hard foam. The ribs have an approximately [ or I-shaped cross-section. The ribs are formed by an outer chord and by an inner chord interconnected by a web. If the structure is cylindrical, for example, the ribs extend circumferentially. The rib webs are made of rib web segments which are displaced relative to each other, for example in the circumferential direction in case of a cylindrical structure. The displacement of the web elements corresponds to the on-center spacing between neighboring longitudinal stringers, whereby the fiber reinforced material of the end portions of the rib web segments merge into rib reinforcing or bracing members, where the ribs intersect the stringers. The rib bracing members alternate in opposite directions along a rib and are filled with a hard foam.

  • Patent number: 4811892
Abstract: Structural parts, particularly of complicated shape, are diffusion welded to each other under isostatic pressure to form permanent joints. A two phase operation is involved in the joint formation. In the first phase at least one of the welding joint forming surfaces of the two parts to be joined, is provided with a material which will form a metallurgical layer in the gap between the two surfaces forming the welding joint. The metallurgical layer forming material may be applied to one or both joint forming surfaces prior to assembly of the parts or the material may be introduced into the gap between the surfaces after the parts have been assembled. In both instances it is the aim to seal the gap prior to the second phase in which a diffusion welding is performed in a hot isostatic press.

  • Patent number: 4808814
Abstract: A system for sensing fractures in a structural component that has a plurality of light conductor fibers attached to or incorporated in the structural component, such as an aircraft body or wings made of fiber reinforced material. The light conductor fibers function as fracture sensors. For this purpose the light supply to each individual fracture sensing light conductor and the interrogation whether a light signal has passed through the light conductors is controlled by a computer. The absence of a light signal at a particular conductor signifies a fracture and this fact may be indicated on a display in the cockpit of an aircraft.

  • Patent number: 4805313
Abstract: The contrast between a target and the target markers or line divisions on a graticule disk of a sight, especially for a hand-held weapon, is enhanced by a device which illuminates the graticule disk with refected liight. The device has an attachment member which is rapidly mountable to and removable from the sight housing. The attachment member carries a frame which holds glass bodies filled with gaseous tritium and coated on the reflecting surfaces with a luminous lacquer or paint. The light entry and exit sides are not coated. The attachment member holding the frame permits shifting the frame between a first effective position in which light collected by the tritium filled glass bodies is transmitted onto the graticule disk, and a second ineffective position in which light is not transmitted to the graticule disk.

  • Patent number: 4804934
Abstract: An electromagnetic adjustment device for performing mechanical rotational movements has two electromagnetically excitable pole pieces arranged opposite each other to form an opening partially surrounded by concave circular surfaces of the pole pieces. A rotary anchor of permanent magnetic material is rotatably supported in the opening. The anchor has two opposite circular surface sections and two opposite flat surface sections. The flat surface sections face the concave circular surfaces of the pole pieces when the rotary anchor is in a position signifying a center of its operational range. The radius of the concave circular surfaces is slightly larger than the radius of the circular surface sections of the rotary anchor forming north and south poles so that four air gaps are formed between the concave circular surfaces of the pole pieces and the circular surface sections of the rotary anchor.

  • Patent number: 4796724
Abstract: A system for producing pressure or shear-waves in a solid medium uses a wave generator with at least one primary induction coil and at least one short-circuited secondary coil. The short-circuited secondary coil is rigidly connected to the solid medium for directly transmitting to the solid medium the repulsion force generated between the primary and secondary coils by a short-circuit current caused to flow in the secondary coil when electrical power is applied to the primary coil. Thus, the system is a transformer in which the short-circuited secondary coil is directly used as the tool for the wave application.
