    Abstract: An improved thermal shock resistant and generally thermal resistant ceramic composition is disclosed. The ceramic composition is compounded of aluminum oxide as a primary constituent with additives in a preferred form comprising zirconium oxide plus manganese oxide or titanium oxide, or both, interacted by exposure to high temperature. The additives increase the thermal shock resistance of the fired ceramic composition, with retention of elevated temperature strength properties. The ceramic compositions are prepared as high density solid shapes or as porous structures. The solid shapes formed into machine components show improved resistance to rapid thermal excursions, differential thermal gradients and elevated temperatures. Open cell ceramic foams of the ceramic composition are useful for hot filters, such as for filtering molten metal as well as in reaction supporting applications, where such ceramic foam structures are subject to rapid temperature and pressure transients.

    Abstract: A stainless steel wheel trim ring is constructed of an outer ring and a grip annulus. The outer ring is formed of a sheet metal band which is constructed from a rectangular blank having a pair of wedge shaped strain relief notches in a longitudinal edge adjacent to each end. The blank is welded at the joined ends to form the band. During manufacture, the band is expanded in the order of 25% at the longitudinal edge. A crimped peripheral bead along the longitudinal edge secures the grip annulus to the outer ring.

    Abstract: A method for accurately displaying positional information of a map. A street or terrain map is produced and then digitized. The actual location of various antenna monuments is determined and a coordinate grid map is produced. A table of positional data is created using information derived from calculating the position of each of the antenna monuments utilizing a navigational tracking system, such as the LORAN-C system. Positional information received from various vehicles and the antenna monuments is used to calculate correctional factors used to distort and skew the grid lines constructed from said table of positional data in such a manner that the exact position of a vehicle can be displayed on the street or terrain map.

    Abstract: Apparatus for determining the relative humidity of an atmosphere by measuring the dew point of the atmosphere. The dew point is measured by lowering the temperature of a condensing or sensing surface associated with a heat flow sensor. When condensation begins to occur this is detected by the heat flow sensor as a change in the rate of heat flow through the condensing surface. In one embodiment a pair of heat flow sensors are employed, one maintained at a slightly lower temperature than the other. The sensors are connected in series opposition so that output signals due to background or convective heat transfer are cancelled, any change in the combined output signal of the two sensors then indicating heat flow resulting from condensation. The temperature of the cooler face will be the dew point temperature. Two arrangements of sensors are disclosed.

    Abstract: A continuous operation press for the manufacture and treatment of a board web of prefabricated or raw material, wherein the board web is passed into an inlet region between the upper and lower stringers of upper and lower endless belts traveling at a predetermined velocity in the transport direction, wherein there is provided a smooth coating formed with grooves serving as a sliding surface located at least in the main press and calibration regions. The board web glides above the smooth coating with the aid of fluid lubricant, the lubricant being supplied to the smooth coating through supply openings and discharged therefrom through discharge openings. Each groove in the smooth coating is formed with an opening therein either as a supply or discharge opening, each groove having a lubricant supply opening being positioned adjacent a groove having a lubricant discharge opening. Means are provided for controlling the pressure in at least some of said grooves for generation of a counter-pressure.

    Abstract: A catalyst for after market installation into unvented consumer kerosene heaters is provided. In a preferred embodiment plural stainless steel screens each coated with a catalyst material consisting of alumina and a metal from the platinum group or compound thereof is suspended within the kerosene heater. The peripheries of the screens are joined to one another so as to promote fast start up and slow cool down of the catalyst. The catalyst is coated directly on the steel wires of the screen, without intervening ceramic support structure, so as to reduce thermal mass and cost.

    Abstract: The housing of the filling device mounted on the tank wall defines a chamber wherein a spring-activated cut-off valve is mounted. This valve comprises a head cooperating with a valve seat at the end of a supply duct opening into the chamber and a piston-forming body separating the chamber into two volumes. The housing presents openings between the tank inner volume and the frontmost chamber volume, and a duct between the backmost chamber volume and the tank inner volume. A no-return valve, which only lets liquid to the tank inner volume, is mounted in this duct. At the end of this duct a valve controlled by the float in the tank is mounted.

    Abstract: A curved section is provided for connecting in a conduit through which passes a fluid stream having solid material entrained therein. A plurality of wear strips are attached to the inside wall of the curved section. They are positioned for the solid material to impinge thereon as the fluid stream changes its direction of flow as it passes through the curved section. The wear strips are elongated members of wear resistant material positioned side-by-side along the inside wall against which the solid material impinges. The abutting sides of adjacent wear strips are beveled so that the outer edges of one adjacent strip extends over the inner edge of the other adjacent strip to provide a continuous surface of wear resistant material in the path of the entrained solid material.
