Abstract: A user may utilize a communication device, e.g., a wireless phone, mobile device or personal digital assistant (PDA), to contact an information/call center where an operator provides personalized information and communications services to the user in accordance with the invention. Such services include, e.g., providing listing information, contacts information, appointments information, etc. To provide effective connectivity, for example, when a user locates a phone number in his/her private directory using a web browser, the user may utilize a direct connect feature of the invention to initiate a phone call to the desired number over the Internet. In addition, the invention allows for delivery of the appointments information to the user not only via voice connection, but also SMS, email, facsimile, PDA, etc. It also allows for rendering a calendaring service in combination with such services as a TeleConcierge® service which helps the user to plan a future event, e.g., making a restaurant reservation.

Abstract: A telephone call may have more than one identifier, e.g., a billing telephone number and a caller's telephone number, within its signaling stream. Each identifier may have an associated call servicing profile. The invention determines which of several call profiles associated with identifiers within the call signaling stream should be used to service the call. The invention involves reading the identifiers, retrieving the profiles associated with the identifiers, if they exist, and selecting one of the profiles to use based on data in the profiles and a profile priority scheme. The invention may be realized in relation to an information assistance service.

Abstract: An information assistance service is provided, which enables a user to generate a personal dialing queue containing multiple listings, and to call multiple parties listed in the personal dialing queue without the need to make additional requests for information assistance. In an illustrative embodiment, a request is received from a user for multiple listings representing parties that the user wishes to contact. In response, the operator conducts a search and generates a personal dialing queue that includes a list of telephone numbers, each associated with a respective party. A first telephone number is selected from the personal dialing queue, and a connection is established between the user and the first telephone number. Call status signals associated with the connection are monitored. When the called party disconnects, and the user remains on the line for a predetermined period of time, a second connection is made for the user to a second telephone number selected from the personal dialing queue.

Abstract: It is typical that a user calls an information assistance service provider to request information, e.g., a destination telephone number desired by the user, and chooses to be connected to the destination number. It is also typical that the information assistance service provider offers enhanced assistance service features, e.g., a StarBack feature. In prior art, to provide the enhanced service features, the user's call invariably continues to be connected to a servicing switch associated with the service provider after the user is connected to the destination number. To efficiently utilize the limited capacity of the servicing switch, in accordance with the invention, the user's call may be selectively released from the servicing switch before the call is connected to the destination number. Such a call release depends on certain criteria for determining whether the user is a candidate for utilizing an enhanced service feature after the call is connected to the destination number.

Abstract: A cellular telephone subscriber who wishes directory assistance services is connected in the conventional manner to an operator who identifies a destination telephone number desired by the subscriber. As in the prior art, the operator then initiates a call connecting the subscriber to the destination telephone number. In a preferred embodiment, the operator locates a desired destination telephone number in a computer database, and can select automatic dialing of the located number. Further, rather than dropping all further involvement with the call, the preferred embodiment of the present invention continually monitors the connection thereby established for a predetermined DTMF signal issued by the customer, such as that obtained by pressing the “*” button. If such a signal is detected, the customer is transferred to a directory assistance operator, who can then provide whatever further assistance is needed (e.g. redialing a busy number, or providing further directory assistance).

Abstract: The phone number used by a caller accessing a telecommunication service is derived. For example, this phone number may be used to look up in a first database the name of the user registered with the service, and in a second database the name of the subscriber assigned the phone number. If the two names correspond, the caller is provided with the telecommunication service. Otherwise, a fraud has been detected and various consequences may be visited upon the caller or the user. Some of these consequences include denying use of the service, charging the caller extra for use of the service, etc.

Abstract: A system and method for searching, accessing updating database records on a plurality of geographically dispersed databases is provided. Update databases consisting of a plurality of update records having at least one field capable of being set to at least one particular value are used to update records in target databases. When a database search is conducted on one or more target databases, a search is also conducted on update databases associated with the target databases. The results of the searches are processed. If the at least one field in an update record is set to a predefined value, then all returned records equivalent to the update record are discarded. Otherwise, the update record is added to the search result.

Abstract: A user calls a directory assistance service provider to search for a desired telephone number and be connected to a party at the desired number. In one such connection, the user is afforded enhanced directory assistance upon a user command in the form of an out-of-band signaling message, e.g., SS7 signaling message. For example, the user may be afforded further operator assistance by pressing on the user telephone a predetermined key (e.g., “*” key), which is detectable by the directory assistance service provider as an SS7 signaling message.

Abstract: A call to an information/call center is assigned a call sequence number. Call segments associated with the call sequence number are bundled as a single call session. A call session begins with the connection between the caller and the information/call center, and continues until that connection is torn down. Call segments are realized when connections are made or torn down between the information/call center and called parties. Each call is billed per call session, not per call segment. Call charges for each call session are determined, as are taxes allocated to one or more call segments.

Abstract: In accordance with the invention, an indication of connection information anonymity is stored for each individual or entity that wants to have access information made available in response to a request for directory assistance respecting such individual or entity, but does not want their actual telephone number disclosed. The information assistance service may be accessed by a user using a wireline telephone, wireless telephone, personal digital assistant (PDA) or other communications device seeking information assistance. An operator (or automated unit) who attends to such an information assistance service receives a request for information assistance respecting a researched party whose connection information is designated anonymous, and transmits to the user an access telephone number which enables the user to call a researched party, without however providing the user with the actual telephone number of the researched party.

Abstract: In an information assistance system, when a first party calls the service to request a communications number (i.e., phone number) of a second party, an indicator of the second party, such as the second party's name, is inserted into an event record to be provided to a billing platform. The indicator may also be the second party's address, instead of or along with the second party's name. The name may thereby be readily provided in a bill for the call. In a carrier network, the name of a second party called by a first party is inserted in an event record, so that the second party's name may be included in a bill for the call. The name may be determined by submitting the second party's communications number, which may be derived from call set up signals, to a database correlating communications numbers with corresponding parties' names. This may take place while the communication is being connected. Methods and systems are disclosed.

Abstract: The invention is directed to assessing the viability of a business entity based on statistics concerning information assistance calls requesting the listing of the same. The invention is premised upon a perceived correlation between the number of calls requesting a business entity's listing and the callers' interest in its products or services, which in turn correlates to sales of the business entity. In accordance with the invention, data is collected and analyzed which concerns information assistance calls requesting listings of different business entities which may belong to the same industry or company to measure their comparative performance. In an illustrative embodiment, the performance measure of the business entity (department) may be compared with those of other business entities (departments) in the same geographic area belonging to the same industry to gain insights into the competitiveness of the business entity in that area.

Abstract: In a system which receives, from different sources, data having various formats, the received data is selected and combined in accordance with the invention to create accurate records. Specifically, the inventive system organizes the received data into uniform data records having a predetermined format. The data in the uniform data records is converted, if necessary, to conform to a predetermined nomenclature, resulting in normalized data records. The normalized data records are grouped into sets of equivalent records. For each set, the inventive system selects relatively accurate data from the equivalent records in the set to create a final record.

Abstract: Individuals and groups of individuals, such as corporations, are provided access to one or more private directories. The private directories can be edited by an administrator. Access to the private directories may be limited by administrators of the private directories. Access to private directories is provided via a connection to directory assistance providers. Directory service providers are capable of facilitating the administration of the private directories as well as connecting users of private directories to contacts in the private directories. Access to the private directory may be obtained via an internet connection.

Abstract: In a system for providing customers with information assistance services, records are generated to register service events. In prior art, all of the records are transmitted to a billing platform for billing customers for the services. When a customer requests credit for an unsatisfactory service, the credit issuance is traditionally handled at the billing platform. However, in accordance with the invention, the credit issuance is handled by first identifying, from the records, those records of service events for which the credit is requested. All of the records, except the identified records, are then transmitted to the billing platform for completion of the billing process, thereby effecting the credit issuance.

Abstract: In an information assistance service environment, after information assistance is provided to a caller, the caller may request to have the information assistance service provider complete the call. In the prior art, the call was routed back to the carrier switch from which the information assistance service provider received the call, and that carrier completed the call. In the invention, the information assistance service provider chooses how to route the call to the destination requested by the caller. A routing database including routes available to terminate the call is searched and the call is routed after considering a number of criteria such as availability of routing trunks, the LATA (local access and transport area) within which the destination phone number resides, pricing information, or a combination of these criteria.

Abstract: Telephone users desiring directory assistance services are connected via standard telephone procedures to a directory assistance provider, such as an operator. An operator provides the destination number and initiates a connection to that number. Once that connection is initiated, the connection is monitored for the occurrence of a predetermined condition, such as a busy signal. If no such condition is detected, the caller proceeds with the call in the normal manner. If, however, such a condition is detected, the caller is automatically transferred to a directory assistance provider for further help.

Abstract: A call management system is provided to manage the use of specified wireless telephones in order to limit or manage their use for unofficial calls and to report on official as well as unofficial uses. Calls originated from or directed to a controlled wireless telephone are routed to a call management center from a wireless central office. The call management center determines whether the call is approved by consulting a database of approved telephone numbers. If the call is approved it is completed normally. If the call is not approved, the caller is prompted to provide an access code. The call is completed if the access code matches a predetermined security code. Customizable exception reports are generated to reflect unofficial usage, incorrect access attempts, and other detailed information concerning the use of the specified wireless telephones.
