    Abstract: Tape-to-head compliance in a bidirectional magnetic tape drive is substantially improved in both directions by pivotally mounting the pressure pads. Friction between the moving tape and the pressure pads causes the pads to rotate slightly, the leading portions of the pressure pads thereby exerting greater pressure on the tape than the trailing portions.
