Abstract: Method and apparatus for lossless switchover in a redundant switch fabric improves the reliability and predictability of a cell reaching its destination without the cell being lost during switch-over through redundant switch fabrics. Ingress and egress buffers are disposed in input and output line cards to maintain the history of transmitted cells. When switch-over occurs, the cells transmission history is used to recover lost cells transparently and with minimal latency.

Abstract: Various high speed modem embodiments are provided, for example, having a receiver configured to receive an analog data signal over a telephone line from a first modem, from which digitized analog data signal samples are generated by a processor employing a linear coding process using, for example, a sampling rate of at least 16 kHz with an 8 bits/sample. Following, the digitized analog data signal samples are transmitted over one or more digital lines of a first time division multiplexed bus to a second modem, which may be a digital loop carrier modem, for example. Thereafter, the second modem may demodulate the digitized analog data signal samples to generate digitized data, which may then be transmitted over one or more digital signal lines of a second time division multiplexed bus.

Abstract: The invention improves the encoding and decoding of speech by focusing the encoding on the perceptually important characteristics of speech. The system analyzes selected features of an input speech signal, and first performing a common frame based speech coding of an input speech signal. The system then performs a speech coding based on either a first speech coding mode or a second speech coding mode. The selection of a mode is based on characteristics of the input speech signal. The first speech coding mode uses a first framing structure and the second speech coding mode uses a second framing structure.

The method includes establishing a relationship between signal to noise ratio and plural symbol rates for a particular constellation size. The method also includes determining noise power spectral density (N(f)), wherein N(f) is determined during a silent period of line probing; determining Xk(f), wherein Xk(f) is determined by turning on a remote station transmit signal, after N(f) has been measured and determining residual echo Ek(f), wherein Ek(f) is determined by turning on a central station echo canceller.
Abstract: Modem start-up delay reduced by measuring condition of communications line upon connection termination. Variation between termination and start-up line conditions determines if cold or warm start is required. Warm-start may use original condition descriptors. Condition represented by ambient noise, echo or spectral response of channel.
Abstract: To decode a composite VLIW packet, assembly code is provided for the bit patterns corresponding to each individual instruction in the packet. The bit pattern for the template in the packet is then matched against a known template. The known template uniquely corresponds to a known syntax corresponding to one of a plurality of known syntaxes, where the plurality of known syntaxes are arranged as a plurality of first level nodes in a tree structure, where each of a plurality of second level nodes in said tree structure includes a combination of instruction types, and where each of a plurality of third level nodes in said tree structure includes an instruction type. The known syntax is then matched to a resolved packet syntax using the tree structure. The resolved packet syntax is then used to provide assembly code associated with the execution of the combination of instructions in the packet.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for configuring a gateway device for a modem over packet network session is disclosed. For example, a system may include a first gateway device coupled to a first client device and a second gateway device coupled to a second client device, where the first gateway device is coupled to the second gateway device over a packet network. The trans-compression types and capabilities of the first and second gateway devices are determined and used to generate a set of negotiation parameters. The first gateway device then negotiates with the first client device using the negotiation parameters to select a first compression algorithm. A second compression algorithm selected between the second gateway device and the second client devices is also determined by the first gateway device.

Abstract: A distortion removal system for reducing the quantization distortion that results from quantization of a signal by sample-by-sample quantization techniques is disclosed. The distortion removal system uses the signal previously quantized with the sample-by-sample quantization techniques to determine an expected quantization distortion. The expected quantization distortion is determined for each of a plurality of frames of the signal. The expected quantization distortion is removed from each of the frames of the signal.

Abstract: An approach for adaptively adjusting the correlation window for open-loop pitch determination is presented. Correlation between a windowed reference signal (or target signal) and a candidate signal is maximized under most conditions by sliding the reference window by a delta increment in either direction to capture peak energy. The traditional fixed size of the correlation window is maintained. However, the window slides forward and/or backwards to capture peak energy within the window. The position of the adjusting or sliding window is allowed to shift in a small range or increment in either direction to maximize the energy of the windowed signal thus making sure that at least one peak energy is captured within the window.
