    Abstract: An object is detected by generating a m-ary primary signal having an irregular sequence of states. Each transition results in the transmission of a pulse encoded according to the type of transition. Reflected pulses are processed with a delayed, reference version of the primary signal. The presence of an object at a range corresponding to the delay is determined from the extent to which the reflected pulses coincide with transitions in the reference signal. In one aspect, transitions between states of the primary signal occur at varying time offsets with respect to nominal regular clock pulses. In another aspect, the object-detection system is operated while inhibiting the transmission of pulses, and if a significant output is obtained, the parameters of the transmitted signal are altered.

    Abstract: A method constructs a super-resolution texture from a sequence of images of a non-rigid three-dimensional object. A set of correspondences between the points in model and the object in the images is formed. The points in each image are connected using the set of correspondences to form a triangle texture mesh for each image. Each triangle mesh is warped to a common coordinate system while super-sampling texture in each image. The warped and super-sampled triangle meshes are averaged to produce the super-sampled texture of the object in the image.

    Abstract: A system is provided to classify the gaze direction of an individual obseng a number of surrounding objects. The system utilizes a qualitative approach in which frequently occurring head poses of the individual are automatically identified and labelled according to their association with the surrounding objects. In conjunction with processing of eye pose, this enables the classification of gaze direction. In one embodiment, each observed head pose of the individual is automatically associated with a bin in a "pose-space histogram". This histogram records the frequency of different head poses over an extended period of time. Given observations of a car driver, for example, the pose-space histogram develops peaks over time corresponding to the frequently viewed directions of toward the dashboard, toward the mirrors, toward the side window, and straight-ahead.

    Abstract: A digital video decoder and method therefor receives a digital video signal and performs motion compensation on the digital video signal in the frequency domain. The motion compensation is performed by forming, for each inter-coded picture in the digital video signal, a composite picture in the frequency domain representing a reference picture corresponding to the inter-coded picture, and then adding the composite picture to the corresponding inter-coded picture. Each macro block of the composite picture is formed based on corresponding macro blocks of at least one anchor picture stored in memory. The anchor pictures are stored as compressed bits via quantization and variable length coding of frequency domain blocks to reduce required memory capacity. The synthesis technique employed by the compositor to form the composite macro blocks accounts for both field and frame motion compensation with half-pel accuracy.
