Abstract: Disclosed is a continuous treating process of a rubber modified styrenic polymer composition produced by bulk or solution polymerization and containing at least 1% by weight of a rubber component and at least 16% by weight of the total amount of an unreacted monomer and solvent which process comprises treating the polymer composition in two-step volatile component separation apparatuses, each of which comprises a multi-tube preheater and a volatilizer, to remove the unreacted monomer and other volatile components wherein the first treated composition contains 3-15% by weight of the unreacted monomer and solvent.
Abstract: A porous film having a good water vapor permeability is obtained with a high productivity by melting a resin composition comprising 100 parts by weight of a polyolefin resin and 50 to 500 parts by weight of barium sulfate having an electric conductivity of 250 .mu.S/cm or less in terms of the electric conductivity of a supernatant formed when the barium sulfate is added to water, and a particle size of 0.1 to 7 .mu.m, making the melt into a film and stretching the film to 2.5 to 14 times the original area at least in the uniaxial direction.
Abstract: Disclosed herein is a coating composition which contains a urethane-modified (meth)acrylate compound and a mono(meth)acrylate and is curable upon its exposure to radiation. Also disclosed herein is a coating, especially, a primary coating for an optical fiber, which coating or cladding is composes of a cured material obtained by curing the composition through its exposure to radiation.
Abstract: A process for producing m-phenoxybenzyl alcohol which comprises reacting chlorobenzene with m-hydroxybenzyl alcohol in the presence of a copper compound as a catalyst and a base, characterized in that chlorobenzene is added to a polar solvent having a higher boiling point than chlorobenzene, the amount of chlorobenzene being 0.05 to 4.0 times the weight of the polar solvent; at least one compound selected from alkali hydroxides, alkali carbonates and alkali bicarbonates is used as the base in an amount of 1.0 to 2.0 gram-equivalents per mole of m-hydroxybenzyl alcohol; and the reaction is carried out at a temperature of 140.degree. to 200.degree. C. while removing the generated water as an azeotrope with chlorobenzene.

Abstract: A process for producing 1,3-bis(3-aminophenoxy)-benzenes which are very useful as a monomer for heat-resistant high molecular weight polymers is provided, which process comprises dehalogenating a bis(3-aminophenoxy)-halogenobenzene by its reduction, which compound is selected from the group consisting of 1,3-bis(3-aminophenoxy)-5-halogenobenzenes, 1,3-bis(3-aminophenoxy)-2,4-dihalogenobenzenes and 1,5-bis(3-aminophenoxy)-2,4-dihalogenobenzenes, these raw material compounds being respectively obtained by reacting a 1,3,5-trihalogenobenzene, a 1,2,3,4-tetrahalogenobenzene or a 1,2,4,5-tetrahalogenobenzene with 3-aminophenol in the presence of a dehydrohalogenating agent.
Abstract: An S-alkyl thiocarbamate base lens resin is obtained by reacting one or more NCO-containing compounds, such as xylylene diisocyanate, hexamethylene diisocyanate and/or tetrachloroxylylene diisocyanate, with one or more SH-containing aliphatic compounds, for example, a di(2-mercaptoalkyl) ether.
Abstract: This invention relates to a polyimide powder in use for adhesion and/or coat forming and to a method of preparing said powder, wherein polyamic-acid is chemically imidized which is obtained by reacting tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride with diamine in organic solvents.This invention further relates to a method for adhesion and coat forming by using said polyimide powder.This invention still further relates to a method for preparing prepreg by using said polyimide powder, and a method for adhesion and preparing molded laminates by using said prepreg.
Abstract: A process for producing m-hydroxybenzyl alcohol which comprises electrolytically reducing m-hydroxybenzoic acid in an acidic aqueous solution at a temperature of 20.degree. to 70.degree. while m-hydroxybenzyl alcohol is present always in the electrolytic solution. The constant presence of m-hydroxybenzyl alcohol is effected by (1) continuously adding m-hydroxybenzoic acid to the electrolytic solution in an amount corresponding to that consumed as the electrolytic reaction proceeds, or (2) by continuously adding m-hydroxybenzoic acid and the acidic aqueous solution to the electrolytic solution.
Abstract: Disclosed herein is an agent for absorbing and releasing water vapor, which comprises a homopolymer of at least one monomer selected from specific N-alkyl- or N-alkylene-substituted acrylamides and methacrylamides, a copolymer of two or more of the acrylamides and methacrylamides, a copolymer of said at least one monomer with one or more monomers other than the acrylamides and methacrylamides and copolymerizable therewith, or a water-insolubilized product of the homopolymer or either one of the copolymers. The above agent has broad utility for humidity contol of gases, humidity control in green houses and prevention of fogging on surfaces of transparent materials, as humidity sensors and dew sensors, etc.
Abstract: A sulfur-containing polyurethane base lens resin is obtained by reacting one or more isocyanate compounds, which have two or more NCO groups, with one or more OH-containing compounds, which have two or more OH groups, in such proportions that the molar ratio of NCO groups to OH groups ranges from 0.5 to 1.5. At least one of said one or more OH-containing compounds contains one or more sulfur atoms in the molecule thereof. The total content of sulfur atoms in all OH-containing compounds is 20 wt. % or higher.
Abstract: A process for preparing an N-acylphenylalanine represented by the formula (II): ##STR1## wherein R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 mean individually a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, alkoxy, phenoxy, hydroxy or methylenedioxy group, and R denotes a methyl or phenyl group, which comprises catalytically reducing an N-acyl-.beta.-phenylserine represented by the formula (I): ##STR2## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 mean individually a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, alkoxy, phenoxy, benzyloxy or methylenedioxy group, and R has the same meaning as defined in the formula (II), in the presence of a reducing catalyst or both reducing catalyst and acid, in a solvent.
Abstract: A composition of aminobenzylamine is provided which is mainly composed of m-aminobenzylamine and p-aminobenzylamine in either the presence or absence of a small quantity of o-aminobenzylamine, is liquid at room temperature, and is an excellent cold-setting type curing agent useful for thermosetting resin compositions.

Abstract: A process for producing 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone with a high yield which comprises reacting N,N'-dimethylethylene diamine and/or its hydrochloride with phosgene in the presence of a substantial amount of water and a dehydrochlorinating agent. Particularly, higher yield is attained by carrying out the reaction in water medium while controlling a pH to the range of 3.0 to 10.0 by adding a dehydrochlorinating agent.
Abstract: Magnetic powder protected from subsequent oxidation and deterioration can be obtained by effecting contact of starting magnetic powder, which is formed of an intermetallic compound containing a rare-earth metal and an iron-group metal as principal components thereof, with a phosphorus compound containing at least one active proton having a pKa of 4 or smaller and exposure of the starting magnetic powder to an oxygen-containing atmosphere in an arbitrary order or simultaneously. Production of a plastic magnet with the magnetic powder of this invention allows to avoid danger and deterioration in magnetic characteristics of the resulting product due to oxidation of the magnetic powder even if exposed to elevated temperatures during its production or use.
Abstract: A process for disproportionating silanes, which comprises contacting a silane having at least one Si--H bond represented by the general formulaR.sub.l H.sub.m SiX.sub.4-(l+m)wherein R represents an alkyl or aryl group, X represents a halogen atom or an alkoxy group, l is 0, 1 or 2, and m is 1, 2 or 3 and l+m is 1, 2 or 3, and when l is 2, R's may be identical or different, and when l+m is 1 or 2, X's may be identical or different, with a reaction product of a strong acid-type cation exchange resin with an amine and disproportionating the silane.
Abstract: A process for the preparation of 5,6,7,8-tetrahydrofolic acid which comprises dissolving and/or suspending folic acid or dihydrofolic acid in an aqueous solution containing an inorganic base, and bringing the resulting solution or suspension into contact with hydrogen in the presence of a noble metal catalyst while maintaining its pH at 5-9, thereby catalytically hydrogenating the folic acid of dihydrofolic acid into 4,5,6,7-tetrahydrofolic acid.
