  • Patent number: 5321183
Abstract: Processes for converting a wide variety of aromatic hydrocarbons, such as polyalkylaromatics, into commercially useful para-substituted aromatics such as para-xylene are disclosed. The aromatic hydrocarbon feed stream is first partially converted into toluene which is then subjected to a highly para-selective methylation process. The present invention therefore provides novel processes and catalysts for increasing the para-selectivity in the selective production of para-substituted aromatic compounds. From the description provided herein, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the catalysts and processes of the present invention provide greater para-selectivity at conversion rates unattained by previously known methods.

  • Patent number: 5310715
Abstract: There is provided a method for preparing a pillared layered material, designated MCM-36, with a characteristic X-ray diffraction pattern. Upon calcination of the swollen, non-pillared form of this material, the layers collapse and condense upon one another in a somewhat disordered fashion to form a non-swellable material. However, when the swollen layered material is intercalated with polymeric oxide pillars, the layer separation is maintained, even after calcination. A quaternary ammonium silicate, such as tetramethylammonium silicate, is used as a pillaring agent for treating the swollen material.

  • Patent number: 5308470
Abstract: Non-carcinogenic asphalts and asphalt blending stocks are produced from reduced hydrocarbon feedstocks. Such non-carcinogenic products are produced by establishing a functional relationship between mutagenicity index and a physical property correlative of hydrocarbon type for the asphalt or asphalt blending stock and determining a critical physical property level which, when achieved, results in a product having a mutagenicity index of less than about 1.0. Process conditions are established so that a product stream achieving the desired physical property level can be produced. Non-carcinogenic asphalts and asphalt blending stocks are then processed utilizing the conditions so established.

  • Patent number: 5308602
Abstract: There is provided a method for preparing crystalline ultra-large pore oxide materials. The materials are formed from reaction mixtures comprising an amphiphilic compound, such as a cetyltrimethylammonium compound, a source of at least one oxide, such as silica, and water. The concentration of amphiphilic compounds in these reaction mixtures is rather low. The addition of an inorganic salt, such as sodium bromide, to the reaction mixture may result in the increased thermal stability of the as-synthesized form of the crystalline material and may also alter the crystalline phase of the product.

  • Patent number: 5294578
Abstract: A novel method to prepare a solid acid catalyst through the reaction of a metal-alkyl halide species and the surface hydroxyl group of a solid support is disclosed. Lewis acidic metals, e.g., B, Al and Ga, etc., can then be anchored on the surface via the formation of an oxygen-metal bond. The solids containing these metals can be used as catalysts that will catalyze organic compound coversion reactions, e.g., Friedel-Crafts type reactions, olefin oligomerization, aromatic alkylation and acylation, alkane alkylation and isomerization reactions.
