Abstract: Aqueous acid mine drainage is aerated and treated with slaked lime to reduce ferrous iron as a sludge. Further treatment with an alkaline sodium borohydride solution reduces residual iron and manganese which precipitates out and is removed.
Abstract: A flooding fluid for use in petroleum recovery from a petroleum-bearing formation is prepared by mixing an oxygen scavenger consisting essentially of an alkaline aqueous solution of at least one water-soluble borohydride with an aqueous or nonaqueous input fluid having oxygen dissolved therein to reduce the level of dissolved oxygen.
Abstract: A method for increasing the permeability of a geologic formation by fracturing includes the step of pumping a solution of a borohydride into a well bore. The solution may also include a basic material such as sodium hydroxide. This step may be followed by pumping a second acidic solution into the well bore.
Abstract: A powder composition for use in preparing flooding fluid for use in petroleum recovery from a petroleum-bearing formation includes an oxygen scavenger and a polymer material. Methods for preparing flooding fluid and for petroleum recovery from a petroleum-bearing formation employ the powder composition.
Abstract: A stream of acid mine discharge is treated by mixing an alkaline aqueous solution of sodium borohydride to form a precipitate which is separated from the stream.
Abstract: A process for enhanced oil recovery includes the steps of providing an alkali metal borohydride; providing an alkali metal bisulfite; combining the alkali metal borohydride and the alkali metal bisulfite along with water to provide an oxygen-scavenger composition; combining the oxygen-scavenger composition and an aqueous composition to provide an oil recovery solution; and introducing the oil recovery solution into an earthen formation at a pressure to provide for enhanced oil recovery.
