  • Patent number: 5005620
Abstract: A drum-type wood chipper having a chipper drum with knives mounted in openings with the drum wall. A chip basket is mounted within the drum behind each knife opening. The chipper knife is spaced from the drum wall at both the leading and trailing edges of the knife to define chip ingress and egress openings for the chip box. Cut chips pass into the chip box as the leading edge of the knife chips the infeed material; and the chips are carried by the box for subsequent discharge through the egress opening into a discharge chute.

  • Patent number: 4736781
Abstract: The specification describes a stump chipping disintegrator wherein stumps are received in a trough having a rotatable chipping disc at one end and a powered ram plate at the other, the ram plate having diagonally extending penetrators. A stump stabilizer anvil adjacent the disc projects radially inwardly of the trough. The disc has steel, wood slicing blades at the radially inner portion thereof, mounted at a small acute angle to the face of the disc toward the direction of rotation, and carbide chopping blades at the radially outer portion thereof, mounted at a large acute angle to the face of the disc toward the direction of rotation. At least the carbide blades are mounted in special holders removable from the disc. The carbide blades have backup wedge elements that extend substantially the width of the blade at its outer end and extend substantilly to the radial outer edge of the blade.

  • Patent number: 4534390
Abstract: A whole tree feeding and chipping assembly for longitudinally feeding whole trees with attached limbs and branches to a chipper wherein the chipper disc is arranged crosswisely at an acute angle to the longitudinal pathway of feed, and a feed works is provided for feeding the tree butt first to the chipper knives. The feed works includes a generally vertically disposed, fixed axis side feed roll on one side of the pathway, a generally vertically disposed swing side feed roll on the opposite side of the pathway; and a bottom feed roll disposed crosswisely to the pathway and defining the lower boundary of the pathway. A partly conical convergent chute minimizes frictional impedance and a plow is provided for moving debris from the vicinity of the feed works. The rolls are driven at coordinated speeds of rotation in a direction to feed the tree into the chipper mouth.

  • Patent number: 4522344
Abstract: A system for separating and classifying whole tree wood chip material comprising essentially wood and bark overs, chips and bark fines which is supplied to a bin or receptacle. The chip material is augered in a forward direction in a monitored flow longitudinally away from the bin while passing it across a first stationary screen trough system having openings of a size to pass everything, while rejecting the overs. The acceptable chips and fines passed through the first screen trough system are then augered across a second stationary screen trough system having openings of a size to pass the fines to a fines trough, while retaining the acceptable chips. Finally, the acceptable chips are moved forwardly toward a chip discharge location while the fines passed through the second screen trough system are separately collected. The system includes mechanism for diverting chipped material unsuited to use in a paper mill, such as chipped tree tops, directly to the fines trough.

  • Patent number: 4351719
Abstract: A vibratory screen apparatus is employed to continuously separate particles of random sizes, such as wood chips, into groups large, medium and small sized particles. A vibratory frame has a horizontal platform driven in vibratory movement to convey particles on the platform to one end of the platform. Upper and lower inclined screens are mounted upon the platform, particles are fed to the upper end of the upper screen which will pass medium and small sized particles passing through the lower screen to the platform. Gravitational movement of particles down the inclined upper screen is delayed by the vibratory movement of the screen; abutment surfaces on the upper surface of the upper screen imparting intermittent upward movement to particles on that surface which resists, but does not overcome gravitationally induced flow of the particles.

  • Patent number: 4078590
Abstract: An apparatus for reducing whole trees having attached limbs and branches to chips wherein a power driven disc chipper is mounted on a frame and a tree or brush feeding and conditioning mechanism is driven at a coordinated feeding speed for feeding trees and tree parts into the chipper while folding projecting limbs and branches inwardly toward the trunk. A pair of power driven feed rolls, mounted for rotation about generally horizontal axes above and below a feed path, are supported for both coordinated generally vertical movement relative to the frame and for relative vertical movement, and power actuated means are provided for selectively varying the vertical spacing between the pair of feed rolls. The power actuated means are so arranged that when a squeezing action is applied, as to crush vertically projecting limbs, the upward force exerted by the lower roll exceeds the downward force exerted by the upper roll to reduce the frictional force exerted by any obstructing tree parts on the support platform.

  • Patent number: 4057192
Abstract: Machinery for reducing forest products to wood chips wherein a bed conveyor, a powered roll mounted for vertical movement above the bed conveyor, and powered, generally vertical side roll means downstream of the generally horizontal roll, feed a tree or log to a chipper disc. The chipper disc has at least one opening, and a knife positioned at the opening to cut products conveyed to the disc into chips and propel them through the opening with rotation of the disc assembly. The machine includes improvements which are more specifically set forth in the following material.

  • Patent number: 4030606
Abstract: A vibratory tubular screen for separating particulate material, such as wood chips, into coarse and fine classifications. A hollow tubular screen is mounted for rotation about its axis with the screen axis inclined downwardly away from a receiving hopper through which material is introduced into the interior of the screen. A roller support assembly rotatably supporting the screen intermediate its ends includes a resiliently biased support member which is deflectable downwardly in accordance with the combined weight of the screen and material contained in the screen. When the combined weight of the screen and material exceeds a predetermined weight, the resiliently biased member is deflected downwardly to a position in which a vibrating element comes in contact with the screen to impart a radially directed vibratory action to the screen as it is driven in rotation.

  • Patent number: 3979152
Abstract: Apparatus for handling particulate material, such as wood chips or the like in which a pneumatic conveying tube is manipulated to discharge a stream of wood chips or other particulate material toward a specific location as in the bulk loading of trucks or railway cars. An elongate rigid material conveying tube is coupled at one end to a receiving unit which includes a material receiving hopper and a penumatic blower for propelling material from the hopper into and through the tube. The opposite end of the tube is suspended from a mast assembly mounted upon a power-driven carriage which moves independently of the material receiving unit to position the discharge end of the tube at the desired location. A curved discharge section at the end of the tube may be rotated relative to the tube to direct the stream of discharged material to one side or the other of the tube.
