  • Patent number: 5455071
Abstract: Inner and outer surfaces of structural components are aluminized by an aluminum gas diffusion process. For this purpose a gas mixture of a halogenous gas, aluminum monohalide gas, hydrogen, and negligible proportions of aluminum trihalide gas is caused to flow over the outer and inner surfaces of the component to be coated. The process is performed in a vessel in which at least two different temperature zones are maintained for keeping one or more aluminum sources at a higher temperature than the component to be coated. Especially gas turbine engine blades are protected against oxidation and corrosion by the so formed aluminum diffusion coatings on outer and inner surfaces of the blades.

  • Patent number: 5445392
Abstract: This invention relates to apparatus for sealing a clearance between two components in relative movement one with respect to the other. A sealing strip between the two components is arranged in a direction transverse to the direction of movement to bear against a sealing face of the first component to seal the clearance. The sealing strip is allowed to float in a groove in the second component on a fluid flowing all around between the groove and sealing strip. This invention finds preferred use on rectangular-section exhaust gas nozzles of turbojet engines, where the components represent the lateral wall or nozzle flaps and the fluid is air tapped at the compressor, which simultaneously serves to cool the nozzle flaps and the sealing strip. The contact pressure of the sealing strip against the sealing face can therefore be made a function of engine load.

  • Patent number: 5443042
Abstract: A radiator through which a coolant flows and which is cooled by the cooling air supplied by a cooling air blower is associated with an internal combustion engine as a rule. An airflow guidance housing disposed between the radiator and the cooling air blower is used to guide the air. With an uneven flow of cooling air, the maximum efficiency of the radiator cannot be utilized. The cooling air flow is evened out and the cooling output is increased in that the flow resistance in the radiator or in a flow grating associated with it is greater in the areas close to the cooling air blower than in the areas remote from the cooling air blower. To achieve corresponding flow resistances, it is contemplated to make the distances between cooling fins in the radiator or segments in the flow grating of different width in the respective zones.

  • Patent number: 5444536
Abstract: The curvature profile of edges, such as trailing edges of propulsion plant blades or vanes is measured by a device that uses a laser beam for illuminating the curvature profile. The laser beam is generated by a laser that causes its beam to pass through a radiation intensity matrix arranged between the laser and the curvature profile. The radiation intensity matrix has locally different intensity values for varying the laser beam intensity over the cross-section of the laser beam. Sensors are so arranged that they sense the reflection values of the laser beam along the curvature profile of the profile edge. The outputs of the sensors are operatively connected to a central processing unit for ascertaining the curvature profile on the basis of the sensed reflection values. Thus, even sharp edges, such as knife edges, cutting tool edges, or propulsion plant blade edges can be checked for their current quality.

  • Patent number: 5429477
Abstract: A vibration damper for rotor housings includes a rubber-elastic damping band (6) that encircles the outer circumference of the rotor housing (4) in a contour fitting manner. A clamping band (7) encircles the damping band (6) and secures the damping band to the housing (4). The clamping band is made of a material having a different modulus of elasticity than the material of the rotor housing, which achieves a detuning of the vibrational system including the rotor housing and the vibration damper as components. Such a detuning reduces the vibrational tendency of the rotor housing. Frictional rubbing between the damping band and the housing surface, and between the damping band and the clamping band effectively damps or dissipates the energy of any vibration that does occur.

  • Patent number: 5406791
Abstract: Support apparatus for the exhaust pipe of an internal combustion engine in which three suspension rods pivotably support the pipe at one longitudinal station and two others engage the pipe at a second longitudinal station. An external radial force is applied to the pipe preferably at a suspension rod at the second station. Specific and constant bearing forces determined by the size of the external force occur essentially independently of the temperature of the exhaust pipe and these forces hold the exhaust pipe in a secure state, free of play, without introducing damaging stresses. In addition, the position of the exhaust pipe at a specific temperature can be obtained by suitable selection of the arrangement and length of the suspension rods.

  • Patent number: 5400505
Abstract: In a method of manufacturing fiber-reinforced engine components having a metal matrix, a long or even continuous silicon carbide fiber is first coated with a matrix metal of a titanium-based alloy by atomizing or sputtering. Then, the fibers coated with matrix material are wound onto a mold in the direction of the anticipated stresses. A covering of foils, bands, wires, pressed-on granulates, sintered-on powders or a top coating of matrix metal is then applied onto the surface of the fibers wound onto the mold. Finally the mold with the wound-on, matrix-material coated fibers and the covering of matrix metal is subjected to hot isostatic pressing. This method is used to manufacture engine shafts, shroud bands for turbine wheels or disk-less turbine wheels having retaining rings holding the blades.

  • Patent number: 5394854
Abstract: A cooling system for a supercharged internal-combustion engine has a high-temperature and a low-temperature circulating system, in which two charge air coolers, through which coolant of different temperature levels flows, are provided for cooling the charge air in two stages. The high-temperature circulating system comprises a main branch with the internal-combustion engine and a high-temperature recooler which is connected in series with it. So that the total quantity of coolant may be kept low and a high degree of heat exchange can be achieved while the arrangement of the pipes is simple, the coolant quantity flowing out of the secondary circulating system is admixed to a coolant flow leading to the internal-combustion engine, and the total coolant flow flowing out of the internal-combustion engine is then guided to the high-temperature recooler.
