Abstract: A method is disclosed for determining a connectivity status of radios in a coverage group. Each coverage group includes radios configured to transmit and receive range messages on a channel and a timeslot. Each radio in the coverage group is configured to generate a range message and to transmit the range message to each other radio in the coverage group. Each radio in the coverage group is also configured to receive, from each other radio in the coverage group, a range message generated by each other radio. Based on the range message received from each other radio, each radio is configured to determine bi-directional connectivity between the receiving radio and the radios that sent the D-ARTS messages. The determined bi-directional connectivity status is between each radio and each of at least two other radios in the coverage group.

  • Publication number: 20130322414
Abstract: A method and apparatus for confirming delivery of group data to a plurality of radio communication devices in a wireless communication system. The wireless communication system includes a plurality of radio communication devices in communication with a sender. In operation, the sender sends group data to the plurality of radio communication devices and further determines a call hang time sufficient to contain a dedicated acknowledgment slot for each of the plurality of radio communication devices. The sender reserves an acknowledgment slot in the determined call hang time for each radio communication device and further sends an acknowledgment polling signal to each radio communication device, where the acknowledgment polling signal identifies the respective acknowledgment slot that is reserved for each radio communication device to acknowledge receipt of the group data. The sender accordingly receives an acknowledgment from the radio communication devices during its respective reserved acknowledgment slot.

  • Publication number: 20130324095
Abstract: A dynamic call based user ID allows subscriber units to be shared amongst a plurality of users or used for a plurality of roles/uses. A voiced call sign is transmitted by a calling subscriber unit to a targeted subscriber unit. A pattern in the voice transmission of the calling unit is detected, and the voiced call sign is compared to a list of pre-stored call signs. When a match between stored calls signs and the current call sign occurs, the calling subscriber unit saves the current call sign. Fixed network equipment (FNE) then associates the saved current call sign with a subscriber unit ID (SUID) of the calling unit. The dynamic association between the call sign and the SUID allows the subscriber unit to be shared amongst different users and for different uses/roles.

  • Publication number: 20130324124
Abstract: Disclosed are methods and systems for controlling network selection between a current wireless network and a higher-priority wireless network. A subscriber station determines, while connected to a current wireless network, whether it is within a coverage area of a higher-priority wireless network and whether a current traffic data load is indicative of lower-priority background traffic or higher-priority foreground traffic. Responsive to determining that it is within the coverage area of the higher-priority wireless network and that the current traffic data load is indicative of lower-priority background traffic, the subscriber station halts at least the lower-priority background traffic for a predetermined amount of time sufficient to effect a release of a radio resource control (RRC) connection with the current wireless network and searches for and connects to the higher-priority wireless network.

  • Patent number: 8595484
Abstract: A method and device for distributing public key infrastructure (PKI) certificate path data enables relying nodes to efficiently authenticate other nodes in an autonomous ad-hoc network. The method includes compiling, at a certificate path management unit (CPMU), the PKI certificate path data (step 405). One or more available certificate paths are then determined at the CPMU for at least one relying node (step 410). Next, the PKI certificate path data are distributed by transmitting a certificate path data message from the CPMU to the at least one relying node (step 415). The certificate path data message includes information identifying one or more trusted certification authorities associated with the one or more available certificate paths.

  • Patent number: 8593219
Abstract: A radio frequency (RF) amplifier structure provides highly efficient RF signal amplification across a wide bandwidth, when implemented in both inverting and non-inverting Doherty designs, by employing matching impedance transform circuits that comprise a low pass multiple section inductance-capacitance circuit and that provides impedance matching between the output of an amplifier device and a power combiner, wherein the output matching impedance transform circuit has approximately an odd multiple of 90 electrical degrees over the RF amplifier structure's frequency range of operation, and adjustable phase delay circuits that route an amplified RF signal to the power combiner and that are controllably adjusted based on a frequency of an RF input signal over an operating frequency range of the RF amplifier structure.

  • Patent number: 8594684
Abstract: Generally speaking, pursuant to the various embodiments, pre-allocation of resources in a RAN of a communication system is performed. A system element having an application function determines, for a set of user equipment (UE), pre-allocation information used to select a set of cells in the RAN to which the set of UE will connect for exchanging data. The element sends a request to establish a bearer to an evolved packet core (EPC), wherein the request includes the pre-allocation information. The determining and sending actions are performed prior to one or more of the UE in the set of UE connecting to the set of cells. The EPC processes the request and returns a response to the system element, which identifies that a bearer for unicast and/or group communications has been established.

  • Patent number: 8594590
Abstract: A method for controlling peak-to-average power ratio prior to amplification by a power amplifier is provided. The peak sample of a signal is predicted, window length is adjusted based on the peak width around the peak sample or subcarriers used to transmit the signal, and the window is subsequently used to clip the samples. A peak suppression window may be applied prior to predicting the peak sample when a set number of samples exceed a predetermined threshold. Window clipping may be deactivated if interference and throughput of the power amplifier is detrimentally affected. A pulse shaping filter may be optimized based on the window clipping to control transmitted signal characteristics. Various thresholds used in the prediction may be initially based on system design and power amplifier linearity and then dynamically adjusted based on an estimation of active subcarriers or of interferers present in the communication system.

  • Patent number: 8594686
Abstract: A method and apparatus for extending a virtual channel of a communication area to a user equipment is disclosed. A message including a virtual channel identity and an area identity from the user equipment is received at a call controller. The call controller determines that the virtual channel identity is associated with a communication area and the area identity is associated with an area outside the communication area. The call controller then determines whether a virtual channel extension feature is enabled on the user equipment, and if so, receives data from the user equipment and then distributes the data on the virtual channel.

  • Patent number: 8589359
Abstract: An apparatus and method of providing accurate and consistent open spectrum results for secondary devices from different geo-location databases is presented. The results, which may be independently derived by each database, are independent of the database queried. The comparison permits some amount of latitude in spatial and temporal consistency between the databases as errors are only indicated if the temporal or spatial discrepancies are pervasive. In addition, large percentages of different locations showing discrepancies when compared also lead to corrective action being taken. Corrective actions that may be taken include forcing problematic databases to update, shunting requests by secondary devices in the problematic locations to acceptable databases or shutting down the problematic databases entirely.

  • Patent number: 8588146
Abstract: A node in a wireless communication system announces a channel switch operation to facilitate a smooth transition to other channel. The node detects a requirement to discontinue communications at a first channel and sends a message to a plurality of neighboring nodes in response to detecting the requirement. Generally, the message comprises at least a reason for discontinuation of communications at the first channel and a duration for the channel switch operation after which the node is available for communications at the first channel or an alternate channel. Each of the plurality of neighboring nodes can determine based on the message and the neighborhood conditions a requirement to scan alternate channels to initiate communications with other nodes.

  • Patent number: 8587495
Abstract: An antenna system includes a multi-port antenna with an active feeding network coupled thereto. The active feeding network applies complex weights to signals received from and transmitted to each port of the multi-port antenna. The complex weights are applied according to eigenvectors corresponding to a Hermitian matrix representation of the multi-port antenna. The Hermitian matrix may be based on such multi-port antenna parameters such as power dissipation, power radiation, real-power flow, volumetric storage of electromagnetic energy, and/or volumetric dissipation of electromagnetic energy. The multi-port antenna yields orthogonal electromagnetic fields in volumes or surfaces of interest in response to the active feeding network excitation.
