Abstract: Implantable assemblies/devices and methods are provided for manipulating energy transferred by members defining an articulating anatomical joint, wherein the members collectively define a path of motion. Assemblies/devices are provided with a first component configured to be attached to a first anatomical member of the anatomical joint, a second component configured to be attached to a second anatomical member of the anatomical joint, and a tension member joining the first and second components. The tension member is placed under tension to absorb energy transferred by the anatomical members when the first component is attached to the first anatomical member and the second component is attached to the second anatomical member and a distance between locations of attachment of the first and second components becomes smaller then an implant-defined distance between the locations.

Abstract: A system and method for sharing and absorbing energy between adjacent body parts includes a system which facilitates absorbing energy between members forming a joint, such as between articulating bones. An exemplary embodiment of the system includes a first attachment structure, a second attachment structure, a piston component, and an energy absorbing spring component. The spring component is attached only to one of the first attachment structure and the second attachment structure, and the piston component is attached only to the other of the first attachment structure and the second attachment structure.

Abstract: Various methods for treating a joint are disclosed herein. According to one method, a joint is surgically treated by performing a surgical repair treatment on tissue within the joint capsule; implanting a load reducing device at the joint and entirely outside of the joint capsule to reduce load transmitted by the treated tissue to allow for the tissue within the joint capsule to heal; and partially unloading the joint during healing of the surgical repair site.

Abstract: Ankle distraction or load bypassing devices include a shoe or shoe insert that securely holds a patient's foot, and a cuff that securely holds the patient's lower leg. A load bypassing device can transmit force between the cuff and the shoe or shoe insert bypassing a portion of the load around the joint. A distraction force generating mechanism between the cuff and the shoe or shoe insert can distract the patient's ankle, while permitting the ankle to flex at a joint which joins together the cuff and the shoe.

Abstract: An energy absorbing system, useful for attachment across a patient's joint, includes portions which are formed entirely or in part of a non-metallic material, e.g., PAEK, and thus reduces the possibility of the formation of metal debris in vivo. The system can include a flexibility-enhanced piston, retained within a spring, which reduces the possibility of tissue impingement with the system.
