  • Patent number: 4506635
Abstract: In a valve control, at least two valves (16, 17) per cylinder head (11) are actuated in unison by a cross member (18) moved by a rocker arm (13). The rocker arm (13) and a guide member (15) are pivotally connected with the cross member (18) and form a parellelogram for the rectilinear guidance of the cross member (18). The valve clearance compensation and the accurate abutment of the cross member (18) at both valve stems is attained by adjustment of the fixed points of rotation of rocker arm (13) and guide member (15). Adjustable eccentrics are arranged in the points of rotation, which cooperate with at least one automatic adjusting mechanism (28, 30). The eccentricities (23, 26) of the two eccentrics are disposed perpendicular to one another in the starting position. During the entire operating period, freedom from clearance and a constant control geometry are assured for the valve control.

  • Patent number: 4458491
Abstract: An exhaust manifold system for a reciprocating internal combustion engine which includes an exhaust manifold common to all of the cylinders. A turbine of at least one exhaust gas turbocharger is supplied in a ramming process, with exhaust gases from the manifold. The cylinders are disposed in two rows or banks disposed at an angle with respect to one another, with the cylinder heads being connected to the engine block at appropriate mounting surfaces. The exhaust manifold system is disposed inside the engine block in the tunnel-shaped chamber. The chamber is deliminted by longitudinally extending walls of the engine block, with the walls being located in the angle between the cylinders, and by a sealing wall. The sealing wall links or connects the longitudinally extending walls together at a level of the mounting surfaces on the two banks of cylinders. The arrangement of the exhaust manifold system in this manner reduces the pollution of the environment caused by radiation of heat and noise.

  • Patent number: 4457134
Abstract: An internal combustion engine with several parallel-connected exhaust gas turbochargers which are adapted to be individually connected and disconnected. The exhaust gas turbochargers are constructed so that together they accommodate the exhaust gas and air mass throughflow of the internal combustion engine at rated power. At a partial power of the internal combustion engine, in correspondence with an instantaneous supply of exhaust gas, such a number of exhaust gas turbochargers are in operation that the internal combustion engine operates maximally close to optimum operating conditions. One of the exhaust gas turbochargers is constructed for a lower exhaust gas and air mass throughflow than the remaining exhaust gas turbochargers.

  • Patent number: 4453381
Abstract: In the operation of supercharged internal combustion engines, certain operating conditions exist during which the exhaust gas turbochargers cannot supply adequate supercharging air for the internal combustion engine due to a low production of exhaust gas by the engine. To eliminate this problem, an auxiliary compressor with a flywheel is proposed, which is constantly driven by an auxiliary drive mechanism and whose power input can be considerably reduced by closing its air conduit. In case of lacking charging air, the auxiliary compressor is used in a simple way, by opening the closure devices on its air side, in order to enable a supply of supercharging air to the internal combustion engine. The power required for driving the auxiliary compressor is derived primarily from energy stored in the revolving flywheel mass as well as from the power of the auxiliary drive mechanism.

  • Patent number: 4429533
Abstract: An internal combustion engine supercharged by exhaust turbochargers, with the engine being provided with an auxiliary combustion chamber, the exhaust gas of which is temporarily fed to a turbine of an exhaust gas turbocharger for improving acceleration characteristics of the internal combustion engine. The combustion air for the auxiliary combustion chamber is derived from a stream of supercharging air produced by the exhaust turbocharger. At least two exhaust turbochargers are provided with compressors thereof both conveying or feeding into a supercharging air conduit, to all cylnders of the internal combustion engine. Each of the compressors are equipped on an intake side with one check valve. During an idling or partial load, the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine is fed to only one of the two exhaust turbochargers, wherein a conveying air stream produced by this exhaust turbocharger effects an automatic closing of the check valve of the other exhaust turbocharger.

  • Patent number: 4422296
Abstract: An internal combustion engine which is supercharged by exhaust gas turbochargers and which includes an auxiliary combustion chamber. Exhaust gases from the auxiliary combustion chamber are temporarily fed to turbines of the exhaust gas turbocharger for improving acceleration characteristics of the internal combustion engine. The combustion air for the auxiliary combustion chamber is derived from the stream of supercharging air produced by the turbochargers. At least two exhaust turbochargers are provided which operate in parallel. In case of acceleration of the engine, the exhaust gases from the internal combustion engine circumvent the turbines of the exhaust gas turbochargers, and then the exhaust gases of the auxiliary combustion chamber alone effect the drive for all exhaust gas turbochargers.

  • Patent number: 4418536
Abstract: A reciprocating internal combustion engine which includes several exhaust gas turbochargers, with one or more of the exhaust gas turbochargers being adapted to be disconnected during partial load operation of the engine. A blocking device such as, for example, a flap, a valve, or the like is arranged in an exhaust gas duct and in an intake duct of each disconnectible exhaust gas turbocharger. For a connection or disconnection of the respective exahust gas turbochargers, the exhaust gas blocking device is opened or closed, respectively, arbitrarily or under control of operating parameters of the internal combustion engine. An operating or coupling connection is provided between the exhaust gas blocking device and the supercharger air blocking device.

  • Patent number: 4417735
Abstract: A sealing element located on corresponding openings of adjacent components which are rigid with respect to one another. The openings of the component terminate in sealing surfaces which are located opposite to one another and spaced from one another. A sealing ring, radially outwardly opened, is provided with a trapezoidal internal contour. The sealing ring is located between the sealing surfaces of the two components and cooperates with such components. The sealing ring is centered on a centering bead on an inside diameter of one of the components and a spreading element is located between inner leg surfaces of the trapezoidal internal contour of the ring for spreading the outer surfaces of the ring against the sealing surfaces of the component.

  • Patent number: 4343274
Abstract: A control arrangement for an injection pump of an internal combustion engine wherein a correcting element, determining the required power of the internal combustion engine, and a centrifugal speed governor, for maintaining the limiting speeds of the internal combustion engine, are effective on a control rod of the injection pump to adjust the required feed rate of the pump. A correcting displacement of the control rod is optionally limited by the control arrangement in dependence upon various influential variables of the internal combustion engine. The control arrangement includes an electromagnet which cooperates, under slight pretensioning, with a free end face of the control rod. An electronic circuit provided for processing an output signal of an inductive displacement pickup for the control rod position and signals defining the operating condition of the internal combustion engine to control a variable effecting a metered activation of the electromagnet.
