  • Patent number: 5053120
Abstract: The invention relates to an arrangement for the automatic removal of water collecting in a fuel filter having a water separator. The evacuation takes place by means of a piston acted upon by a pressure medium, preferably a fuel pressurized by the pressure of the fuel pump, the piston being guided in the container of the fuel filter containing the water. It is particularly advantageous for an already existing drive to be usable for producing the pressure medium and that therefore a simple and inexpensive solution is offered for the removal of the water.

  • Patent number: 5022227
Abstract: The fastening of the thin-walled exhaust pipe inside the liquid-cooled covering takes place by means of screws which are distributed in a cross-sectional plane of the exhaust pipe at the circumference. For receiving the screws, brackets are arranged in the wall of the exhaust pipe which have an internal thread corresponding to the screws. In the mounted state, in the area of each bracket, a radially smaller dimensioned space exists between the exhaust pipe and the covering, which smaller space is eliminated after the tightening of the screws. Instead, the pipe is deformed in the cross-sectional plane of the screws in the sections between the brackets. The extent of the deformation depends on the magnitude of the thermal expansion of the pipe to be expected at the operating state, no constraining forces therefore occur at the pipe which endanger the operation and which result from an obstructed thermal expansion.

  • Patent number: 4903489
Abstract: During idling or partial load of the reciprocating piston-internal combustion engine, the exhaust gas turbocharger (18) is shut-down and the fuel supply is interrupted with some cylinders (12). An optimum charging air supply matched to the operating condition of the reciprocating piston-internal combustion engine results by a controllable shifting device (32) in the charging air line section (14) of the shut-down cylinders (12). The passage from the charging air line (19) to the charging air line section (14) is closed by the shifting device (32) during operating periods with interruption of the fuel supply to the cylinders (12). At the same time, a passage opens from a suction opening (33) to the charging air line section (14), through which the air requirement of the disabled cylinders (12) is covered. The interconnected exhaust gas turbocharger (17) thereby operates in a favorable operating range.

  • Patent number: 4875784
Abstract: The invention relates to a slide bearing with two bearing shell halves which are held together during the installation by springy clamps. The clamps are formed from a band-shaped material piece having two bow-shaped legs bent over toward a side which are supported in inwardly inclined end areas at edges of the bearing shell halves. The seating of the clamp is thereby wobble-free, and more particularly both when the clamp is inserted with only one end into a mounting as also when both bearing shell halves are assembled which then are held together without play. The secure seating of the clamps is attained by multiple linearly- and areally-like supports of the clamps and by springy abutment at the inwardly bent end areas of the legs of the clamp, whereby axially acting forces result.

  • Patent number: 4865332
Abstract: A sealing arrangement between a shaft and a housing of a fluid flow engine consists of a blocking gas space acted upon with blocking gas, which is delimited by two sealing rings guided in annular grooves of the shaft and radially sealingly abutting at the shaft through-bore. In order to avoid operation-endangering wear of the sealing rings in case of failure of the blocking gas supply, the shaft through-bore is constructed with three diameter regions mutually offset by right angle steps. The steps form each an axial support for the coordinated sealing ring which comes into action when a permissive initial wear has occurred at the sealing ring.

  • Patent number: 4808091
Abstract: A bearing support of the rotor of an exhaust gas turbocharger with two inwardly disposed roller bearings in which, to assure a long length of life of the bearing, the roller members of the bearings are pressed constantly against their races so that they roll off along the same in a defined manner and no wear occurs as a result of sliding or load changes. The abutment forces which act at the bearings are produced by one or several pneumatic cylinders whose pressure spaces are preferably in connection with a gas space of the compressor. As the magnitude of the charging pressure of the compressor is dependent on the rotational speed, the abutment forces are also variable with the rotational speed. The piston surfaces of the pressure cylinders are so matched that at low rotational speeds as low as possible a bearing friction loss results whereas the abutment forces are still sufficiently high to assure a damage-free bearing operation.

  • Patent number: 4807436
Abstract: The invention relates an arrangement for the mounting of exhaust gas lines which are arranged in an exhaust gas-tight space, and serve for the transfer of the combustion gases from the exhaust openings of the cylinder heads to the exhaust gas manifold. By reason of the high temperature load of the exhaust gas lines which are not cooled in the exhaust gas-tight space, the mounting is so constructed that no compulsory forces can occur which stem from the temperature strain. This is achieved by a point-shaped mounting of flanges connected with the exhaust gas lines at only one circumferential place each. The single point fastening assures a radial and axial expansion possibility of the exhaust gas lines under thermal load free of compulsory forces. The exhaust gas lines are threadably secured each by means of fastening bolts within the area of the ends of the cylinder head side preferably at the cylinder head or at wall parts of the components forming the exhaust gas-tight space.

  • Patent number: 4617903
Abstract: A diesel engine with an injection pump coordinated to each cylinder. The pump piston (13) of each injection pump is actuated by a cam (15) of a camshaft (12) by way of a roller tappet (14). Each roller tappet (14) is arranged in an individual tappet guide member (16) which is axially adjustably supported by means of two coaxial cylindrical guide pins (17, 18) in corresponding openings (19, 20) of the cylinder crankcase (11). By means of this arrangement, the position between cam (15) and roller tappet (14) and therewith the delivery start of the injection pump is adjustable by displacement of the tappet guide member (16). A universal applicability for diesel engines with different cylinder numbers is achieved by the individual arrangement of the tappet guide members (16), whereby additionally a simple manufacture and assembly is realized.

  • Patent number: 4616480
Abstract: A control for the engagement and disengagement of an exhaust gas turbocharger in which the charging air pressure of the internal combustion engine is used as control magnitude for the engagement and disengagement. Unfortunately, this charging air pressure exhibits oscillations with large amplitudes after each engagement and disengagement which could trigger faulty shifting operations in the control. To alleviate this problem, the control line (44) between the charging-air line and the control slide valve members (40, 41) is always closed off when these oscillations occur and their negative effects on the control are thereby prevented.

  • Patent number: 4572148
Abstract: A diesel internal combustion engine in which during the starting and partial load operation, a number of the cylinders are operated as compressor cylinders and a number as engine cylinders. The supplied charging air of one compressor cylinder (26) is used as actuating medium for the valves (35 to 42) which are to be controlled corresponding to the operating condition of the internal combustion engine, in the connecting lines (27 to 34) between the compressor cylinders (19 to 26) and the engine cylinders (11 to 18) in the absence of a compressed air network. As a result thereof, auxiliary energy of the internal combustion engine (10) is needed only for the initiating control and a rapid shifting of the operating conditions is attained with minimum expenditures.

  • Patent number: 4570442
Abstract: A piston internal combustion engine in which for the engagement and disengagement of an exhaust gas turbocharger (12), its exhaust gas closure device (33) is opened, respectively, closed only so far that the charging air pressure produced by the continuously engaged exhaust gas turbocharger (11) remains approximately constant. By re-routing a small air quantity by way of a by-pass line (36) to the suction side of the compressor (24), the power input of the compressors (21 and 24) is kept small. During the engagement of the exhaust gas turbocharger (12), a small energy quantity is therefore sufficient in order to accelerate the same to its operating rotational speed. Thereafter, the engaging operation is terminated by complete opening of the exhaust gas closure device (33) and by opening of the charging air closure device (34).

  • Patent number: 4557111
Abstract: A control system for the engagement and disengagement of exhaust gas turbochargers, in which the charging air pressure acts as control magnitude on a first control end face of a slide valve member against the force of a spring; in order to prevent the effects of the strong pressure fluctuation of the charging air pressure, which occur during engagement and disengagement of an exhaust gas turbocharger, on the shifting behavior of the control device, the slide valve member includes a second control end face, on which a second control pressure acts temporarily; the second control pressure and the first control pressure and the working medium for the control system may be formed by the charging air pressure so that no additional pressure sources are required; however, by the use of a spring biased valve the second control pressure may additionally be used for the filling limitation during starting and in the range of lower outputs of the piston driven internal combustion engine.

  • Patent number: 4550568
Abstract: In a turbocharged diesel internal combustion engine (10) with low compression ratio, at least one cylinder (11) operating as an engine cylinder is charged during starting and at partial load operation by several cylinders (18, 21, 28) operating as compressors. The pistons of the compressor cylinders (18, 21, 28) lead the piston of the engine cylinder (11). As a result thereof, the engine cylinder can be charged during its compression stroke. The compressor cylinder (28) which by reason of its large angular ignition spacing to the engine cylinder cannot feed directly into the engine cylinder, delivers its supplied air at first to another compressor cylinder (18) which is located more favorably. Only thereafter, the air of the two compressor cylinders (18 and 28) is fed in common and in parallel with a further, possibly also favorably located compressor cylinder (21), to the engine cylinder (11).
