  • Patent number: 5701669
Abstract: In a repair method for lengthening turbine blades having undersized blade lengths, a sheet metal strip is preformed in a U-shape and is then used as a support form, for which it is tightly pressed against the upper blade contour in a force-locking and exactly contour-fitting manner by an outer synthetic material surround molding. The sheet metal strip is arranged in such a manner that it protrudes beyond the blade tip and protrudes out of the pressing synthetic material mass. In order to lengthen the turbine blade, the space within the sheet metal strip that protrudes beyond the blade tip is filled by laser deposit or build-up welding. Furthermore, a particular support form is provided for carrying out the lengthening of the turbine blade, and a method for producing the support form is described.

  • Patent number: 5688105
Abstract: A brush seal assembly is provided for sealing off spaces on a circumferential gap which are acted upon by pressure in a different manner, particularly between an engine casing and an engine shaft. On the engine casing, a holding device for a bristle bundle is provided from which the bristle bundle is guided between circumferential webs sealingly against the engine rotor and, with respect to the one web facing the high pressure side, forms an axial gap in the circumferential direction. In the axial gap, a covering ring for the bristle bundle is arranged in an axially and radially movable manner which is operated by the differential pressure and can be displaced with respect to the bristle bundle. With respect to the ends of the webs surrounding the engine shaft at a distance, the covering ring is to project out of the axial gap and surround the engine shaft by means of a radial sealing gap.

  • Patent number: 5630879
Abstract: Structural components (2), such as turbine blades (16) partially to be coated, for example with precious metal coatings, are inserted into a circumferential pocket on a carrier wheel (8), so that surface areas (10, 10A) protruding radially outwardly are presented for a coating operation, for example by vapor deposition, gas diffusion, plasma spraying, or sputtering, while surface portions (9) of the components within the wheel are protected against coating by wheel disks (8A, 8B). The wheel is rotated either continuously or stepwise through an active coating chamber (3). Surfaces to be coated participate in forming first and second walls for enclosing a coating space (11). Other walls of the space (11) are formed by one or two coating sources (12, 13), such as cathode sputterers, whereby the need for screens or masks (4, 14) that form the remaining walls of the space (11) are minimized. The bottom (59) of the space (11) is preferably formed by wall portions (4A) of the turbine blades (16).

  • Patent number: 5618396
Abstract: Work pieces to be galvanically coated or plated are held in place with a good electrical contact by a holding device having an electrically conducting hollow carrier (2), a magnet (3) removably mounted inside said hollow carrier (2) the ends of which are closable for protection of the magnet in a galvanic bath. A cover (4), with receptacles (28) or bore holes in which the work pieces or parts (12) are received, is clamped to the carrier (2) by a releasable clamping device (5). The magnet (3) is arranged alongside a contact surface (19) through which the magnet holds the parts (12), since the pole axis (P) of the magnet (3) extends perpendicularly to the contact surface (19) which may be formed by a machined surface of a carrier wall or by an electrically conducting ferromagnetic plate secured to the carrier.

  • Patent number: 5593282
Abstract: A rotor of a turbomachine includes blades having an improved blade root configuration for anchoring and centering the blade roots in axial slots of the rotor disk. Each blade root includes two portions or sections, namely a serrated section that has a single bilaterally uniformly shaped serration, and a terminal portion that has rounded surfaces and a narrower cross-section than the serrated root section. The serrated section provides anchoring against centrifugal forces. The terminal portion provides the predominant centering effect, for which it is radially movably received and located in a recess provided in the bottom of the slot. The special root configuration substantially avoids misfit and centering problems associated with manufacturing variances, whereby the blades and blade roots can be made of lightweight engineering materials.

  • Patent number: 5584659
Abstract: In the device, the turbine blades are anchored with blade feet, which are profiled like teeth, to correspondingly shaped axial grooves of a wheel disk. An axial gap is left between each blade foot end and the base of an axial groove, in which gap a securing element is disposed. The securing element can be bent on both ends, which protrude out from the gap, directed opposite each other against faces of the wheel disk and a blade foot, and is clamped in a wedged manner in the relevant axial gap between the groove base and the blade foot. The securing element bridges over a recess, which is formed in the blade foot to receive a balancing mass.

  • Patent number: 5562999
Abstract: A component made of an intermetallic compound of titanium and aluminum, or of alloys of such intermetallic compounds with alloying additions forming the base material, and with an aluminum diffusion coating on the base material, is provided. The component has, between the base material and the aluminum diffusion coating, a closed zone which is close to the surface and has a recrystallization structure. For this purpose, the component is cold-formed or slightly melted in a zone which is close to the surface, is then annealed at the recrystallization temperature, and finally has an aluminum diffusion coating applied to the recrystallized zone. The process is used for components in engines and, particularly, for components in the hot-gas duct of an engine.

  • Patent number: 5557099
Abstract: A signal device for turbo-engines which, by way of moving blades arranged on a rotor, when passing through a defined circumferential position of the housing, generates signals which are precise with respect to time. The device includes a probe which has fiber optical waveguides for emitting and receiving light. An illuminating beam is emitted which is focussed in the direction of the rotor. The probe is arranged on the housing at a distance with respect to free end faces of the moving blades. The probe emits the illuminating beam with an elliptical cross-section, through which the moving blades travel, in such a manner that, on each corresponding free end face, an elliptical illumination spot is imaged whose large axis is aligned essentially in parallel to the delivery-side or suction-side edges of the free end faces. The signals are generated from the light reflected by the free end faces.

  • Patent number: 5474421
Abstract: In the rotor of a turbomachine, especially the turbine of a gas turbine engine, each rotor blade is mounted in the rotor disk rim by a blade root having a serrated profile that engages a correspondingly formed axial groove in the rotor disk rim. A shroud band is constructed so that at a predetermined operating point of the turbine, adjacent blades are supported against one another so as to damp vibrations. Light weight and heavy weight rotor blades are mounted alternatingly around the circumference of the rotor disk. The blade root and corresponding axial groove associated with each light weight or heavy weight blade are differently dimensioned or shaped to correspond to the differing loads associated with the heavy weight blades and the light weight blades respectively. Different materials, having different densities, are used for the heavy weight blades and the light weight blades.
