  • Publication number: 20120050254
Abstract: A user interface is provided whereby a user may generate a virtual target area representative of an actual target area, regardless of whether the actual target area has been constructed. Having a generated virtual target area, the user—via the user interface—may generate virtual representations of light to project onto the virtual target area. The virtual representations of light correspond to photometric data from actual light sources. In this manner, the user renders a real-time image representative of what an actual target area would look like illuminated with an actual lighting system. This, in essence, permits a user to evaluate the effectiveness of a lighting system in real time without committing to the purchase of a lighting system.

  • Patent number: 8123383
Abstract: An apparatus and method for high intensity lighting includes, in one aspect, a reflector frame having a main portion generally following a surface of revolution of the type that produces a converging beam and a second portion following a surface of revolution of the type that produces a different shape beam. Placement of the second portion in the reflector frame allows shifting of parts of the light beam in desired directions.

  • Patent number: 8104925
Abstract: An apparatus, method, and system of aiming devices such as antennas, free-space optical communication transmitters and lighting fixtures. One aspect of the invention mounts a substantially collimated light source on a device or lighting fixture. The direction of the substantially collimated light source is fixed in a known relationship to the aiming direction of the fixture or device. By finding the substantially collimated light source either by direct viewing, in a mirror, or with a light sensor, the aiming direction of the fixture or device can be derived by using the known the relationship between the substantially collimated light source and the aiming direction of the fixture or device. Thus, the aiming direction of the fixture or device can be derived without operating the fixture or device and can be derived even at relatively remote locations from the fixture or device. The apparatus and method can be used on one fixture or a plurality of fixtures or devices.

  • Patent number: 8104927
Abstract: An apparatus and method for adjusting a high intensity discharge arc tube to a predetermined (e.g., relatively horizontal) operating position in a light fixture regardless of aiming orientation of the light fixture towards a target. In one aspect, the light source is mounted in an independently pivotal yoke in the light fixture. A mechanical linkage proportionally pivots the light source relative to any pivoting motion of the fixture over a range of positions such that a selected light source orientation can be approximately maintained regardless of aiming orientation of the fixture.

  • Patent number: 8098024
Abstract: A method, apparatus, and system for compensating for lamp lumen depreciation and providing selective discretionary lamp power adjustment, e.g., for lamp dimming. The method includes operating the lamp under rated wattage for a period towards the first part of operating life of the lamp. Operating wattage is increased at one or more later times. Energy savings are realized. The increases also restore at least some light lost by lamp lumen depreciation. The apparatus uses a timer to track operating time of the lamp. A few wattage changes made at spaced apart times can be made in a number of ways, including changing capacitance to the lamp, or using different taps on the lamp ballast. A component allows selective discretionary adjustment of electrical power or some other controlling factor to adjust light output (e.g. dim) the lamp.

  • Publication number: 20110296670
Abstract: An apparatus and method for reducing lumen depreciation caused by other than lamp lumen depreciation. In one aspect, manufacturing and assembly of the fixture uses clean-room light techniques. In another aspect of the invention, materials that have a propensity to outgas are shielded from direct exposure to light energy. Other aspects of the invention include other methodologies to eliminate causes for lumen depreciation.

  • Publication number: 20110267824
Abstract: An apparatus and method for a high intensity lighting fixture. In one aspect, instead of a spun aluminum bowl-shaped reflector, a die cast metal reflector frame, somewhat simulating a bowl shape, includes an inner surface with mounting structure. A high reflectance sheet or plurality of high reflectance inserts are placed onto the mounting structure to create a reflecting surface. This allows high customability of the reflecting surface and minimizes light loss.

  • Patent number: 8037630
Abstract: An apparatus, method, and system for holding a device along the side of a relatively tall pole. The apparatus includes, in one aspect, a hanger bracket adapted to removably mount to the pole. A frame to which the device can be mounted is attached to the hanger bracket. In one embodiment, the frame has first and second cross-arms and an elongated member spacing the cross-arms from each other. In another aspect, a second hanger bracket can be used to further connect the frame to a pole. A locking device can be used to lock at least one of the hanging brackets to the pole. In a further aspect of the invention, the device is a banner or sheet-like device. In another aspect of the invention, the bracket and/or banner is in combination with the pole and/or device.

  • Publication number: 20110245939
Abstract: Envisioned are apparatus, methods, and systems whereby a customer and an initial provider work cooperatively to develop quantifiable lighting specifications for the customer's application. Said specifications are developed as a result of the customer's feedback to a lighting demonstration. The developed lighting specifications may then be used by the customer in evaluating potential lighting suppliers (which may include the initial provider) to ensure the desired lighting scheme can be duplicated by a permanent lighting system.

  • Patent number: 8006394
Abstract: A method of laying out a grid of points across an area comprises designating a starting reference point; projecting with the laser beam a first reference line intersecting the first reference point and extending in a first direction relative to the area; designating the set of first line reference points along the first reference line; projecting with a laser beam a second reference line from each of the set of first reference line points in a direction at least partially across the area; designating a set of second line reference points at or near the area along each of the second reference lines, so that a grid of points across the area correlated to at least one laser beam projection is created. In this manner, the laser provides a quick and accurate straight line for referencing points in the grid. The method could be used to just lay out a grid of lines.

  • Publication number: 20110194294
Abstract: An apparatus, method and system for assembling lighting fixtures where reflective inserts are installed into a reflector frame to create a reflective surface for the fixture. According to one aspect of the method, some type of worker-perceivable indication prompts a worker as to which reflective insert should be installed at which mounting location on the reflector frame. The worker does not have to guess or translate written instructions. The method can be used sequentially to provide such assistance for each of a plurality of reflective inserts for a plurality of mounting locations. The method is particularly helpful if the reflective inserts are not identical for each mounting location. According to one aspect of an apparatus according to the invention, a reflector frame is removably mounted to a machine that holds the reflector frame in an indexed position.

  • Patent number: 7988326
Abstract: A method, apparatus and system for illuminating a large area with plural high power lighting fixtures. The method includes identifying fixtures having a likelihood of affecting playability or glare or spill light relative to a point of view on or off the large area. The method includes steps to identify such fixtures for the purpose of adding a component which improves lighting or decreases glare or spill light for the point of view. A further method does so for multiple points of view relative to the large area, whether on or off the large area. One component is a long visor that would be added only to identify fixtures.
