  • Patent number: 5854556
Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting partial discharges in cables and accessories. An electrical interruption is created in, for example, the sheath conductor of a cable, and the voltage of high frequency signal components, created by a partial discharge, is measured across the interruption. The interruption is short-circuited to allow low frequency signals to pass across the interruption, thus preventing low frequency signals from being measured. This is useful because the signal/noise ratio of the frequency range measured according to this invention is more favourable. Also, in order to properly and accurately measure a partial discharge, it is important to relate measurements to the main supply voltage of the cable. The present invention also provides a method wherein prior to display the signal is combined with a signal representing the main supply voltage.

  • Patent number: 5767684
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for detecting partial discharges occurring in a cable, wherein the cable has an earth screen with a helical structure, comprising the following steps of: arranging at least one detection coil round the cable for detecting electromagnetic pulses travelling along the cable; applying a potential difference between the core and the earth shield of the cable; and analyzing pulses generated by possible partial discharges in the at least one detection coil in order to determine the location and quality of the partial discharge having caused the pulse, wherein the detection coil is adapted to process signals with a frequency higher than 100 MHz. It has been found that with coils comprising only such a limited number of turns the signal detected by the coil is a much better representation of the form of the electromagnetic pulse travelling along the cable.

  • Patent number: 5546010
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for measuring a resistance value in a network incorporated in an electrical apparatus, wherein the network has at least two accessible terminals, the network has at least two time constants differing mutually by at least one order of magnitude, and the resistance value can be related to the voltage applied to the terminal clips and the current flowing through the apparatus.Such control switches are poorly accessible.Direct measurement is time-consuming as a result of the large value of the time constants. These problems are diminished by applying a step-like change of the voltage to the terminal clips, measuring the current flowing through the terminal clips before the change has taken place and after the transient phenomenon related to the smallest time constant and caused by applying the change is damped, and calculating the first resistance value from the measured values of the current.

  • Patent number: 5453254
Abstract: Disclosed are a process and apparatus for effecting chemical and/or physical reactions by means of solid-gas contact. The apparatus has a shaftlike reaction chamber widening in upward direction and divided into compartments by means of horizontal grids. The process is performed by introducing a particulate solid of about 0.5 to 5 millimeters particle size into the reaction chamber and passing a gas stream in upward direction through that chamber at an output sufficient to keep the particles in floating condition. A floating bed of solid particles will be formed in the reactors then and excellent solid-gas contact suitable for affecting chemical and physical reactions is provided hereby. A special embodiment relates to the removal of nitrogen oxides from flue gases with the aid of a particulate catalyst.

  • Patent number: 5425064
Abstract: Coolant flow (900) in the core (103) of a natural circulation boiling water reactor (100) is monitored by making use of a detector (208) for nuclear radiation and a turbine device (204) which comprises a rotor (304) which can modulate the flux (206) of the nuclear radiation on the detector. The turbine rotor can be installed in a fuel bundle (104), while the detector can be placed in an adjoining instrumentation tube (320). Included in the turbine rotor is material (308) which modulates the radiation field (neutron field and/or gamma field). The radiation detector detects (602) variations in the radiation field when the turbine rotor device is set into rotation by the coolant flow (900). The coolant flow rate is then calculated (603) from the speed of these variations.
