In an integration step, the collected and cached voxels of the preparation step are updated with a newly captured depth map frame. However, the preparation step, and the integration step are separated from each other so that both steps can be carried out in parallel, and at the same time.

    Abstract: A method for extracting information about a body's skeleton from a 3D body mesh includes measuring the closest distance from every vertex of the 3-D body mesh to the centroid of the 3-D body mesh and using these measurements to compute a geodesic map of these distances. Key anchors are then extracted from the geodesic map. The geodesic map and the key anchors are used to segment the 3-D body mesh into body parts. A circumference of each body part is computed, and a centroid of the circumference is determined. For each body part, a body mean curve along the centroid is determined. Skeleton joints between the body parts and connections between these joints are determined. A 3-D body scanner employing this skeleton estimation method is also disclosed.

    Abstract: A method implemented with a smart body scanner with applications for online apparel retail, fitness, and healthcare applications includes, with a plurality of depth sensors implemented in the body scanner, creating 3D depth images of a body. In a hardware processing step, 3D depth images are generated as recorded part-images with saturated bright regions and lost dark regions. In a pre-processing step, using High Dynamic Range (HDR) processing, depth data obtained in the bright regions is combined with depth data obtained in the dark regions. In a model fusion step, a single 3D body model is created from a stream of the 3D depth images obtained from multiple angles of view during rotating of the body.

    Abstract: A method for calculating the body fat content of a human includes the steps of measuring the body's mass and bio-electrical impedance. A 3D body scanner is used to create a digital 3D body model from which a body volume geometry is determined as a plurality of segments in a cylindrical or conical form with a measured length and a measured cross-section at each end of each segment. Taking account of the body volume geometry, each segment is assigned an electrical impedance to form an electrical body model. Taking account of the mass and electrical impedance of each segment, a body fat content of the segment is calculated. A body composition model can be calculated by summing the body fat contents of the segments of the body. A 3D body scanner for calculating the body fat content of a human is also disclosed.
