  • Patent number: 11569431
Abstract: A CMOS-compatible actuator platform for implementing phase, amplitude, and frequency modulation in silicon nitride photonic integrated circuits via piezo-optomechanical coupling using tightly mechanically coupled aluminum nitride actuators is disclosed. The platform, which may be fabricated in a CMOS foundry, enables scalable active photonic integrated circuits for visible wavelengths, and the piezoelectric actuation functions without performance degradation down to cryogenic operating temperatures. A number of devices are possible, including ring modulator devices, phase shifter devices, Mach-Zehnder interferometer devices, directional coupler devices (including tunable directional coupler devices), and acousto-optic modulator and frequency shifter devices, each of which can employ the same AlN actuator platform. As all of these devices can be built on the same AlN actuator platform, numerous optical functions can be implemented on a single die.

  • Patent number: 11566497
Abstract: A modular anti-rotation device for preventing rotation with respect to the central axis of a drilling tool in a borehole and for producing a notch in a borehole surface. The anti-rotation device includes an upper fixture portion and a lower fixture portion in axial alignment. The upper fixture portion and the lower fixture portion are connected by yoke assemblies. Each yoke assembly is connected to the fixture portion and fixture portion at one end, and forming an articulated joint of the upper yoke assembly and the lower yoke assembly at a distal end opposite the first end. A roller is connected at each joint, connecting the upper and lower yoke assemblies. The rollers engage vertically with a borehole surface, the rollers travelling axially, as a drill shaft penetrates into the borehole, the rollers simultaneously preventing radial movement of the anti-rotation device and prevent rotation with respect to the central axis of the borehole.

  • Patent number: 11564919
Abstract: An in vitro assay was designed to measure the activity of the alphavirus non-structural protein 2 (nsP2), which is the viral protease and is required for viral replication. By taking advantage of fluorescence-resonance energy transfer between two proteins, a protease cleavage assay was generated. This was utilized for high-throughput screening of 40,000 small molecules. Inhibitors were validated using cell-based assays to measure alphavirus infection and cytotoxicity. Certain compounds were then characterized for anti-viral efficacy in various cell lines in numerous assays. Compounds were tested against Chikungunya virus, Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis virus, Rift Valley Fever virus, and Zika virus. Three compounds (compounds I, II, and III) showed pan-alphavirus anti-viral efficacy at concentrations that did not result in cell toxicity. An additional compound, structure IV, showed broad spectrum inhibition of all viruses tested.

  • Patent number: 11563446
Abstract: Fast, efficient, and robust compression-based methods for detecting boundaries in arbitrary datasets, including sequences (1D datasets), are desired. The methods, each employing three simple algorithms, approximate the information distance between two adjacent sliding windows within a dataset. One of the algorithms calculates an initial ordered list of subsequences; while a second algorithm updates the ordered list of subsequences by dropping a first entry and appending a last entry rather than calculating completely new ordered lists with each iteration. Large values in the distance metric are indicative of boundary locations. A smoothed z-score or a wavelet-based algorithm may then be used to locate peaks in the distance metric, thereby identifying boundary locations. An adaptive version of the method employs a collection of window sizes and corresponding weighting functions, making it more amenable to real datasets with unknown, complex, and changing structures.

  • Patent number: 11557019
Abstract: A method for efficient image registration between two images in the presence of inlier-poor domains includes receiving a set of candidate correspondences between the two images. An approximate homography between the two images is generated based upon a first correspondence in the correspondences. The set of candidate correspondences is filtered to identify inlier correspondences based upon the approximate homography. A candidate homography is computed based upon the inlier correspondences. The candidate homography can be selected as a final homography between the two images based upon a support of the candidate homography against the set of candidate correspondences. An image registration is performed between the two images based upon the candidate homography being selected as the final homography.

  • Patent number: 11543474
Abstract: A method is provided for sensing a magnetic field in a magnetic gradiometer of the kind in which pump light and light constituting an optical carrier traverse first and second atomic vapor cells that contain host atoms and that are separated from each other by a known distance. According to such method, the host atoms are prepared in a coherent superposition of two quantum states that differ in energy by an amount that is sensitive to an ambient magnetic field. Modulation of the optical carrier in the respective cells gives rise to sidebands that interfere to generate a beat frequency indicative of the magnetic field gradient. The host atoms are prepared at least in a mode that allows measurement of ambient magnetic field components perpendicular to the axis of the pump light. In such mode, the host atoms are spin-polarized by pump light while subjected to a controlled magnetic field directed parallel to the pump beam, and then the controlled magnetic field is adiabatically extinguished.

  • Patent number: 11536243
Abstract: A nonlinear control design technique capitalizes on a wave energy converter comprising a shaped buoy having a variable geometry wave energy. For example, the shaped buoy can have an hourglass (HG) geometry having a variable cone or steepness angle. The HG buoy is assumed to operate in the heave motion of the wave. The unique interaction between the HG buoy and the wave creates a nonlinear cubic storage effect that produces actual energy storage or reactive power during operation. A multi-frequency Bretschneider spectrum wave excitation input was simulated for the HG design both with constant and varying steepness angle profiles which demonstrated further increased power generation with changing sea states for the variable design.
