  • Patent number: 11831662
Abstract: Extensive deployment of interoperable distributed energy resources (DER) on power systems is increasing the power system cybersecurity attack surface. National and jurisdictional interconnection standards require DER to include a range of autonomous and commanded grid-support functions which can drastically influence power quality, voltage, and the generation-load balance. Investigations of the impact to the power system in scenarios where communications and operations of DER are controlled by an adversary show that each grid-support function exposes the power system to distinct types and magnitudes of risk. The invention provides methods for minimizing the risks to distribution and transmission systems using an engineered control system which detects and mitigates unsafe control commands.

  • Patent number: 11823409
Abstract: A system and method is disclosed for solar tracking and controlling an angular position of a photovoltaic power system. The solar tracking system includes an imaging device for capturing images of the sky; a solar position data generating module; and a control system comprising a neural network. The neural network has multiple convolutional layers to generate a first output associated with the images, and a solar position data module. A first dense layer module receives the solar position data and generates a second output. A second dense layer module receives the first output and the second output and generates a concatenated data sequence. A processor is programmed to generate a multi-planar irradiance signal (MPIS) in response to the concatenated data sequence, and determine an angular position of the PV power system and adjust the angular position in response to an angle of maximum irradiance.

  • Patent number: 11821696
Abstract: A header for a heat exchanger and method for cleaning a heat exchanger in a loop without disconnecting loop components is provided. The header is in flow communication with the heat exchanger for distributing fluid through a plurality of adjacent channels. The header is connected between a main heat exchanger inlet nozzle and a channel flow distributor. A filter element is disposed within the header between the nozzle and channel flow distributor. Under normal operation, the filter element removes particulates and fouling material from the main flow stream before it enters the heat exchanger channels. During the cleaning process, fluid is injected on or through the filter element to remove particulates and fouling material through at least one outlet port. The header arrangement allows the filter element to be ‘cleaned in place’ without draining the system and disconnecting the heat exchanger or other components from the flow loop.

  • Patent number: 11821966
Abstract: An optically pumped, atomic magnetometer incorporates a feedback system for stabilizing the magnetic bias field and suppressing unwanted background fields. The magnetic bias field is applied to a vapor cell containing host atoms of two different species, each of which resonates at a different Larmor frequency when both are subjected to the same magnetic bias field. One species provides the feedback for stabilizing the bias field, thereby creating a stabilizing magnetometer portion that nulls out the unwanted background fields. The other species provides magnetic field detection or signal reception on a radio communication frequency of interest, thereby creating a signal magnetometer portion that permits detection of the signal at the radio communication frequency.

  • Patent number: 11825609
Abstract: Highly conductive electrical traces formed over mechanical steps or on non-planar surfaces with linewidths of 10 to 100 ?m and a method for forming such electrical traces are disclosed. The method employs two steps, with the first step using an aerosol jet printing (AJP) process to form thin electrical traces that serve as the seed layers for the second step. The first step preferably employs multiple passes with the AJP to create multiple seed sub-layers with improved continuity and conductivity. In the second step, the seed layers are subjected to an electrodeposition process that forms the bulk of the thickness of the electrical traces. The electrodeposition process may include one, two, or three phases at corresponding low or high biases, with low biases providing denser, more highly conductive plating sub-layers, while high biases provide plating sub-layers having better gap bridging properties.

  • Patent number: 11808800
Abstract: An interferometric radioimager provides real-time, high-fidelity radioimaging of high voltage breakdown (HVB) both internal and external to electrical components at sub-nanosecond and sub-millimeter resolution and has an ability to resolve multiple/spatially-extensive HVB simultaneously. Therefore, radioimaging can be used to screen for early life weakness/failure and enable non-destructive screening of defective electrical components. In particular, radioimaging can detect precursors to catastrophic HVB, allowing for early detection of weakness in critical electrical components. Radioimaging can also be used to track HVB and pinpoint defects in electrical components real time, including transformers, capacitors, cables, switches, and microelectronics.

  • Publication number: 20230351235
Abstract: A method for controlling a qubit encoded in an atom-like defect in a solid-state host may comprise applying an electrical signal to a piezoelectric cantilever that is mechanically coupled to a photonic waveguide comprising one or more embedded point defect sites. The photonic waveguide may be optically coupled to a photonic chip. Applying the electrical signal to the piezoelectric cantilever may induce movement in the piezoelectric cantilever, which may induce a strain in the photonic waveguide. The applied electrical signal may be determined by a defect site with excitation light, measuring a frequency of a photon emitted by the excited defect site, determining a frequency shift based on the measured frequency of the emitted photon, and determining the electrical signal to be applied to the piezoelectric cantilever based on the frequency shift.

  • Patent number: 11798844
Abstract: A method is provided for making gratings of gold or other metal in silicon substrates. The disclosed method may achieve high aspect ratios. According to the disclosed method, a silicon wafer is through-etched. A seed layer of metal is vapor-deposited on one side of the wafer, and a layer of metal is electrodeposited on the seed layer. The electrodeposited metal plugs the trenches and provides a conductive surface for subsequent electrodeposition. The trenches are then filled by electrodeposition from within the trenches, so that the walls of the metal grating grow on the metal plugs.

  • Patent number: 11791601
Abstract: A pulsed current source comprises a power source, a discharge capacitor, and an inductive element. The discharge capacitor is selectively coupled to either of the power source or the inductive element. When coupled to the power source, the discharge capacitor is charged. The inductive element can be connected to a load. The load can have a current-dependent impedance. When the discharge capacitor is coupled to the inductive element, the discharge capacitor discharges through the inductive element and the load. The discharge capacitor and the inductive element are configured so that the current through the load exhibits a substantially linear rise in a linear operational region. The inductive element is configured to saturate during discharge of the capacitor through the load, so that the saturation of the inductive element causes the current through the load to continue to rise in a substantially linear fashion.
