    Abstract: A method and apparatus for stimulating the lower back and abdominal muscles in a patient comprising applying a first electrode A1/A2 substantially centrally to the lower lumbar region of the patient's body, and applying second and third electrodes B, C respectively to opposite side flanks of the patient's body. The electrodes are energized to apply a first group of muscular stimulation current pulses which flow between the second and third electrodes and a second group of muscular stimulation current pulses which flow between the first electrode and the second and third electrodes alternately.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for use in treating tinnitus, employs a sound processing unit, a tactile unit, and an interface therebetween. The tactile unit comprises an array of stimulators each of which can be independently actuated to apply a tactile stimulus to a subject, and an input for receiving a plurality of actuation signals from the interface and directing individual actuation signals to individual stimulators. The sound processing unit receives an audio signal at an input, analyses the signal with a digital signal processor to generate the actuation signals which are representative of the audio signal, and provides the plurality of actuation signals to the interface. In a preferred embodiment the digital signal processor divides the audio signal into a series of frames in the time domain, performs a transform on each frame to generate a set of coefficients representing said frame, and maps the set of coefficients to a set of actuation signals to be applied to the array.

    Abstract: A method for screening a distressed neonate for risk of having or developing HIE comprises the steps of assaying a biological sample obtained from the distressed neonate, the mother of the neonate, or from the umbilical cord or placenta, for an abundance of miR-374a in the sample, and comparing the abundance of miR-374a in the sample with a reference abundance of miR-374a, wherein a reduced abundance of miR-374a in the sample compared with the reference abundance of miR-374a is indicative of the distressed neonate being at risk of having or developing HIE. Risk of severe HIE can be determined by assaying a biological sample from the distressed neonate identified as being at risk of HIE for an abundance of a plurality of metabolites including succinate, glycerol, acetone and 3-hydroxybutyrate, providing the sum of glycerol and succinate abundance and the sum of acetone and 3-hydroxybutyrate; and correlating the sums with risk of severe HIE.
