  • Publication number: 20120289936
Abstract: A container for collecting, storing and dispensing fluid, as in enteral feeding and/or medication deliver to neonatal infants. The container includes a hollow tube with a body, a first end, a second end, and an outer diameter. The hollow tube is configured to receive a movable plunger that advances and retracts therein to define a variable contained volume. The container also includes a sealing head assembly removably mounted at an end of the hollow tube. The sealing head assembly has a diameter or outside dimension that is substantially similar or identical to a corresponding outside diameter or dimension of the hollow tube, so that the container lies flat within the receiver of an enteral feeding pump.

  • Publication number: 20120071853
Abstract: The present invention is an enteral syringe that can include an elongated body having a hollow cavity therein and at least one vent extending from the hollow cavity to an outside surface of the syringe body. The elongated body can have a first non-circular cross-section. The enteral syringe can also have a plunger operable to selectively travel within the hollow cavity. The plunger can additionally have a second non-circular cross-section that substantially mirrors the first non-circular cross-section. The enteral syringe can additionally have at least one support feature for hanging the syringe from a support structure.

  • Patent number: 4596788
Abstract: A composition of matter which comprises a synthetic whole blood useful as a replacement for whole mammalian blood and a method of making the same are disclosed. The method of manufacture makes use of two gelatins, two modified fluid gelatins, or one gelatin and one modified fluid gelatin of differing isoelectric points, and selected additives. The invention also contemplates the use of only one gelatin or only one modified fluid gelatin, plus lecithin. The invention also contemplates using stroma free hemoglobin, micro-encapsulated stroma free hemoglobin, or synthetic liposomes containing stroma free hemoglobin incorporated in either the coacervate phase or the coacervate system of this invention. The method yields a two phase liquid aqueous system which successfully duplicates the two phase heterogeneous physico-chemical system of naturally occurring whole blood. The disclosed composition possesses many of the physiological capabilities of whole human blood.

  • Patent number: 4558032
Abstract: A composition of matter which comprises a synthetic whole blood useful as a substitute for whole natural blood and a method of making the same are disclosed. The method of manufacture yields a composition of matter comprised of a two phase coacervate system. The claimed system successfully duplicates the two phase heterogeneous physico-chemical system of naturally occurring whole blood. Also disclosed is a phase of the claimed method of manufacture which produces a composition of matter, useful as a substitute for hematocrit. Also disclosed is an embodiment employing a hemoglobin component which is preferably selected from stroma free hemoglobin, synthetic liposomes containing stroma free hemoglobin, microencapsulated stroma free hemoglobin, or emulsified droplets of coacervate containing stroma free hemoglobin. It is preferred that the microencapsulated stroma free hemoglobin when employed ranges in size from 0.1 to 10 microns.

  • Patent number: 4439424
Abstract: A composition and a method of making a whole blood substitute are disclosed. The claimed invention duplicates the two phase heterogeneous physico-chemical system of natural whole blood and accordingly, is capable of carrying out virtually all of the physiological functions of whole blood. Albumin dispersed in a solution composed of distilled water, sodium chloride and urea, and to which a surface active agent such as lecithin is subsequently added, constitutes the preferred method of preparing the two phase aqueous liquid system on which this invention is based. Other ingredients necessary to the manufacture of the claimed composition of matter include stroma free hemoglobin, an appropriate sterol, electrolytes and proteins. Emulsification of the two phase aqueous liquid system and the additives given immediately above completes the preparation of the claimed synthetic whole blood.

  • Patent number: 4311145
Abstract: A disposable instrument is adaptable for use in electrosurgical operations, such as, coagulation procedures used in blocking off fallopian tubes, and is characterized by having an improved electrode and switch assembly which permits interchangeable but permanent mounting of electrodes of a selected length and configuration within a handle grip. The electrodes conventionally may be of a type having normally spaced-apart tips which through actuation of a plunger disposed for extension through the handle grip will cause the tips to be brought together to grasp or surround the tube or other tissue to be coagulated. The interchangeable but positive connection of electrodes within the housing brings them into direct electrical connection with electrical contacts and specifically in such a way that the connection and mounting of the electrodes cannot be disturbed or broken.
