The obturator comprises a shaft having a distal or penetration end for insertion into a patient and a handling or proximal end for gripping by a surgeon. The penetration end of the shaft comprises a tip having an upper flat face and a lower flat face which taper away from the shaft toward the distal end. The tip further comprises flat side faces which also taper or slope from the shaft toward the distal end. A glide tip has a rounded end and extends outwardly along the side faces.

    Abstract: A trocar is disclosed which comprises a body assembly and a cannula assembly attached to the body assembly to define a bore therethrough. The disclosed trocar also includes an obturator assembly for sliding engagement in the bore. The obturator assembly comprises a shaft having a longitudinal axis and having a distal end for insertion into a patient. The distal end of the obturator includes a tip which is non-conical and which has upper and lower faces that taper away from the shaft to form a V-shaped distal end of the tip. Wing elements provided between the upper and lower faces proximate the distal end of the tip, and the wing elements are spaced apart approximately 180 degrees from one another. The tip of the obturator may also include dorsal elements on the upper and lower faces.

Attached to the piercing end of the shaft is a piercing tip having an upper face and a lower face which taper away from the shaft to form a non-conical, blunt head. The piercing tip further includes wing elements located on opposite sides of the piercing tip between the upper face and lower face. These wing elements have a lateral edges.

    Abstract: A trocar is disclosed which comprises a housing assembly having an upper end and a lower end and a cannula assembly attached to the lower end of the housing assembly to define an axial bore therethrough. The disclosed trocar also includes an obturator for sliding engagement in the bore. The housing assembly includes an access port formed on the upper end which is axially aligned with the bore of the trocar. Communication via the access port of the housing is regulated by a flapper valve having a closed position and a range of open positions. The flapper valve comprises a metal flapper door having a male/female configuration formed around the protrusion. In the closed position, the protrusion of the flapper door engages the male/female configuration of both door and port mesh resulting in a metal-to-metal seal across the access port. The metal-to-metal seal provides enhanced resistance to mechanical, heat, and chemical wear encountered during surgical and sterilization operations.

The trocar cannula subassembly includes an outer cannula attached to a main housing having a central bore in which a spring biased, inner cannula is slidably and removably inserted, and an upper housing, removably secured to the main housing, having a central bore which is aligned longitudinally with the bore of the main housing and in which a seal is removably secured. The obturator subassembly includes an elongated obturator having a replaceable and rotatable knife, an elongated shaft, an arcuate shaped cap, and which extends through the upper housing, seal, main housing, inner cannula, and outer cannula. The safety shield control mechanism, located in the main housing and removably engaged with the inner cannula, allows for positive and easily verifiable engagement and disengagement of the inner cannula as a safety shield for the obturator knife.
