Publication number: 20120271568Abstract: A method and apparatus utilizing a pair of ultrasonic transducers simultaneously transmitting and receiving to measure the mean time of flight of an ultrasonic signal over a given distance, and thereby the speed of sound of a fluid in a conduit at a given temperature, independent of flow rate, and the flow rate of the fluid. A signal source simultaneously drives an upstream transducer and a downstream transducer, each of which receive the signal transmitted by the other. The difference between the upstream and downstream signals is substantially invariant with rate of flow of the fluid, and measurement of parameters of this signal takes into account the speed of sound of the fluid. The time of flight for the upstream and downstream signals can then be used to calculate the flow rate.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 20, 2011Publication date: October 25, 2012Applicant: Neptune Technology Group, Inc.Inventor: Michael A. Wilson

Publication number: 20120271569Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring fluid flow in a conduit using ultrasonic transducers. A periodic signal is transmitted from a first transducer and received at a second transducer, and from the second transducer to the first. For each transmission, the phase difference between the signal as transmitted and received is measured. The rate of fluid flow in the conduit can be computed from the phase relationships of the transmitted and received signals.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 24, 2012Publication date: October 25, 2012Applicant: Neptune Technology Group, Inc.Inventor: Michael A. Publication number: 20110219870Abstract: A metering apparatus for measuring the flow of water or other fluid through a conduit. The meter comprises a measuring chamber, in which is disposed a nutating ball and disc. A unitary biaxial member, comprising a drive shaft and a spindle having a longitudinal axis offset from that of the drive shaft, couples the ball and disc to a rotating magnet. The unitary biaxial member both controls the offset of the ball and disc from horizontal, such that it nutates in response to water flow through the meter, and translates this nutation to rotation of the magnet, allowing for measurement of water volume flowing through the measuring chamber.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 12, 2010Publication date: September 15, 2011Applicant: Neptune Technology Group, Inc.Inventor: John Raymond Scarborough, III

Patent number: 7559012Abstract: A method for correcting data signal errors in a meter has been developed. The method includes receiving ordered data signals from the meter. Next, the sequenced of ordered data signals is analyzed to determine whether a data signal is missing. Finally, if a data signal is missing, a predetermined value is added to a sequence counter to compensate for the missing signal.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 2003Date of Patent: July 7, 2009Assignee: Neptune Technology Group, Inc.Inventors: Walter Castleberry, Jerry Lovett, David Hamilton, John Scarborough, Tim Bianchi

Publication number: 20090102681Abstract: A fixed network for automatically reading a utility meter system has been developed. The network includes multiple meter interface units (MIUs) that each collect data from a designated utility meter. The collected data is transmitted to a primary data collector. The network includes multiple data collectors and each MIU identifies its own primary data collector based on signal quality between the collector and the MIU. The network includes a central host computer that is used to receive the collected data from the primary data collectors.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 23, 2008Publication date: April 23, 2009Applicant: Neptune Technology Group, Inc.Inventors: William James Brennan, JR., David Hamilton, Mohammed Ali, Joe Cely, Quentin Easterling, John Bilodeau, Ed Poorbaugh, Burt Carter, Richard Kynard, Warren Wynn, Dan White, David Pettit

Patent number: 7424377Abstract: A method for operating an electronic counter with reduced power consumption has been developed. The electronic counter is divided into multiple segments that are ordered according to their numerical value. As the counter is updated, it becomes necessary to propagate data between the segments. If the supply energy of the counter meets or exceeds a set limit, the data is propagated to the next highest segment. However, if the supply energy of the counter falls below the set limit, the data to be propagated is stored in a propagation carry counter.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 2003Date of Patent: September 9, 2008Assignee: Neptune Technology Group, Inc.Inventors: David Hamilton, Tim Bianchi

Patent number: 6617976Abstract: Apparatus and methodology for radio utility meter reading processing of data acquisition for use with an automatic billing system involves a utility meter transmitter antenna system installed at or near ground level. An RF utility meter communication apparatus transmits utility meter data to a remote utility meter data collection unit from an underground pit box. The pit box includes a utility meter and has a generally ground level pit lid with an opening therethrough. An antenna element has an upper member extending at least partly through such pit lid opening. A depending base of the antenna element extends from the upper element and passes through the pit lid opening into the underground pit box. The depending antenna element is capacitively coupled or provided with some other form of non-mechanical coupling to the output of an RF transmitter also included within the pit box.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 2001Date of Patent: September 9, 2003Assignee: Neptune Technology Group, Inc.Inventors: Brent Walden, Ivan P. Patent number: 6612188Abstract: The present invention provides for a self-powered fluid meter that uses the kinetic energy of a fluid being measured to provide power for circuitry that may perform functions related to the fluid measurement. An element is placed within a rotating magnetic field created from the kinetic energy of a fluid. This element creates an electrical pulse to power the circuitry.Type: GrantFiled: January 3, 2001Date of Patent: September 2, 2003Assignee: Neptune Technology Group Inc.Inventor: David Hamilton

Patent number: 6604434Abstract: The present invention provides a device for measuring both the magnitude of rotation of a rotating magnetic field as well as the direction of rotation of a rotating magnetic field. The present invention may be used to measure the magnitude and direction of fluid flow by converting the kinetic energy of a moving fluid into a rotating magnetic field. At least two stationary sensors are placed in the magnetic field to detect the resulting changes in magnetic flux polarity occurring and provide therefrom a determination of the magnitude and direction of fluid flow.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 2000Date of Patent: August 12, 2003Assignee: Neptune Technology Group, Inc.Inventors: David Hamilton, Walter Castleberry, John Scarborough
