Patent number: 11269744Abstract: Failover methods and systems for a networked storage environment are provided. A filtering data structure and a metadata data structure are generated before starting a replay of a log stored in a non-volatile memory of a second storage node, during a failover operation initiated in response to a failure at a first storage node. The second storage node operates as a partner node of the first storage node to mirror at the log one or more write requests received by the first storage node prior to the failure, and data associated with the one or more write requests. The filtering data structure identifies each log entry and the metadata structure stores a metadata attribute of each log entry. The filtering data structure and the metadata structure are used for providing access to a logical storage object during the log replay from the second storage node.Type: GrantFiled: April 22, 2020Date of Patent: March 8, 2022Assignee: NETAPP, INC.Inventors: Parag Sarfare, Ananthan Subramanian, Szu-Wen Kuo, Asif Imtiyaz Pathan, Santhosh Selvaraj, Nikhil Mattankot, Manan Patel, Travis Ryan Grusecki

Patent number: 11263057Abstract: It is detected that a metric associated with a first workload has breached a first threshold. It is determined that the first workload and a second workload access the same storage resources, wherein the storage resources are associated with a storage server. It is determined that the metric is impacted by the first workload and the second workload accessing the same storage resources. A candidate solution is identifier. An estimated impact of a residual workload is determined based, at least in part, on the candidate solution. A level of caching of at least one of the first workload or the second workload is adjusted based, at least in part, on the estimated impact of the residual workload.Type: GrantFiled: March 31, 2020Date of Patent: March 1, 2022Assignee: NetApp, Inc.Inventors: Lakshmi Narayanan Bairavasundaram, Gokul Soundararajan, Vipul Mathur, Kaladhar Voruganti

Patent number: 11262931Abstract: One or more techniques and/or computing devices are provided for synchronous replication. For example, synchronous replication relationships are established between a first storage object (e.g., a file, a logical unit number (LUN), a consistency group, etc.), hosted by a first storage controller, and a plurality of replication storage objects hosted by other storage controllers. In this way, a write operation to the first storage object is implemented in parallel upon the first storage object and the replication storage objects in a synchronous manner, such as using a zero-copy operation to reduce overhead otherwise introduced by performing copy operations. Reconciliation is performed in response to a failure so that the first storage object and the replication storage objects comprise consistent data. Failed write operations and replication write operations are retried, while enforcing a single write semantic.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 2019Date of Patent: March 1, 2022Assignee: NetApp, Inc.Inventors: Michael Robin Eisler, Santosh Ananth Rao, Akhil Kaushik, Yuedong Mu

Patent number: 11256433Abstract: Techniques are provided for aggregate inline deduplication and volume granularity encryption. For example, data that is exclusive to a volume of a tenant is encrypted using an exclusive encryption key accessible to the tenant. The exclusive encryption key of that tenant is inaccessible to other tenants. Shared data that has been deduplicated and shared between the volume and another volume of a different tenant is encrypted using a shared encryption key of the volume. The shared encryption key is made available to other tenants. In this way, data can be deduplicated across multiple volumes of different tenants of a storage environment, while maintaining security and data privacy at a volume level.Type: GrantFiled: March 15, 2019Date of Patent: February 22, 2022Assignee: NetApp, Inc.Inventors: Srinivasan Narayanamurthy, Dnyaneshwar Nagorao Pawar, Jagadish Vasudeva, Parag Deshmukh, Siddhartha Nandi

Patent number: 11256424Abstract: In order to reduce write tail latency, a storage system generates redundant write requests when performing a storage operation for an object. The storage operation is determined to be effectively complete when a minimum number of write requests have completed. For example, the storage system may generate twelve write requests and also generate four redundant write requests for a total of sixteen write requests. The storage system considers the object successfully stored once twelve of the sixteen writes complete successfully. To generate the redundant writes, the storage system may use replication or erasure coding. For replication, the storage system may issue a redundant write request for each of n chunks being written. For erasure coding, the storage system may use rateless codes which can generate unlimited number of parity chunks or use an n+k+k? erasure code which generates an additional k? encoded chunks, in place of an n+k erasure code.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 2019Date of Patent: February 22, 2022Assignee: NETAPP, INC.Inventors: Suganthi Dewakar, Xing Lin, Junji Zhi, Deepak Raghu Kenchammana-Hosekote

Patent number: 11249954Abstract: Techniques are provided for synchronous replication for synchronous mirror copy guarantee. A file system dependent technique for synchronous mirror copy guarantee is provided by overriding default behavior of a persistent fence so that the persistent fence is activated to block operations targeting a storage object having a synchronous replication relationship based upon the synchronous replication relationship being out of sync. The default behavior of the persistent fence is overridden to allow operations to be executed upon the storage object based upon the synchronous replication relationship being in sync. A file system independent technique for synchronous mirror copy guarantee is provided by intercepting operations before the operations are received by a file system. The operations are selectively forwarded to the file system or not based upon a state of a synchronous replication relationship.Type: GrantFiled: April 19, 2019Date of Patent: February 15, 2022Assignee: NetApp, Inc.Inventors: Akhil Kaushik, Gaurav Verma

Patent number: 11249869Abstract: Failover methods and systems for a storage environment are provided. During a takeover operation to take over storage of a first storage system node by a second storage system node, the second storage system node copies information from a first storage location to a second storage location. The first storage location points to an active file system of the first storage system node, and the second storage location is assigned to the second storage system node for the takeover operation. The second storage system node quarantines storage space likely to be used by the first storage system node for a write operation, while the second storage system node attempts to take over the storage of the first storage system node. The second storage system node utilizes information stored at the second storage location during the takeover operation to give back control of the storage to the first storage system node.Type: GrantFiled: September 21, 2020Date of Patent: February 15, 2022Assignee: NETAPP, INC.Inventors: Ratnesh Gupta, Kalaivani Arumugham, Ram Kesavan, Ravikanth Dronamraju

Patent number: 11249671Abstract: Methods, non-transitory computer readable media, and computing devices that receive data from a primary storage node. The data is stored in a primary volume within a primary composite aggregate hosted by the primary storage node. A determination is made when the data is tagged to indicate that the data is stored in the primary volume on a remote data storage device of the primary composite aggregate. The data is stored on another remote data storage device without storing the data in a local data storage device, when the determining indicates that the data is tagged to indicate that the data is stored in the primary volume on a remote data storage device of the primary composite aggregate. Accordingly, this technology allows data placement to remain consistent across primary and secondary volumes and facilitates efficient operation of secondary storage nodes by eliminating two-phase writes for data stored on cloud storage devices.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 2017Date of Patent: February 15, 2022Assignee: NETAPP, INC.Inventors: Tijin George, Jose Mathew, Harsha Vardhan Reddy Perannagari

Publication number: 20220043582Abstract: A system shares I/O load between controllers in a high availability system. For writes, a controller determines based on one or more factors which controller will flush batches of data from write-back cache to better distribute the I/O burden. The determination occurs after the local storage controller caches the data, mirrors it, and confirms write complete to the host. Once it is determined which storage controller will flush the cache, the flush occurs and the corresponding metadata at a second layer of indirection is updated by that determined storage controller (whether or not it is identified as the owner of the corresponding volume to the host, while the volume owner updates metadata at a first layer of indirection). For a host read, the controller that owns the volume accesses the metadata from whichever controller(s) flushed the data previously and reads the data, regardless of which controller had performed the flush.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 25, 2021Publication date: February 10, 2022Applicant: NETAPP, INC.Inventors: Randolph Sterns, Charles Binford, Joseph Blount, Joseph Moore, William P. Patent number: 11243692Abstract: A system, method, and machine-readable storage medium for analyzing a state of a data object are provided. In some embodiments, the method includes receiving, at a storage device, a metadata request for the data object from a client. The data object is composed of a plurality of segments. The method also includes selecting a subset of the plurality of segments and obtaining a segment state for each segment of the subset. Each segment state indicates whether the respective segment is accessible via a backing store. The method further includes determining a most restrictive state of the one or more segment states and sending state information to the client in response to the metadata request, the state information being derived from the most restrictive state.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 2019Date of Patent: February 8, 2022Assignee: NETAPP, INC.Inventors: Raymond Yu Shun Mak, Aditya Kalyanakrishnan, Song Guen Yoon, Emalayan Vairavanathan, Dheeraj Sangamkar, Chia-Chen Chu

Publication number: 20220027048Abstract: A system and method for improving storage system performance by reducing or avoiding load spike amplification when performing garbage collection is disclosed. A storage controller in a storage system tracks system load including write load and read load, as well as available free segments. The storage controller uses these tracked values as inputs and, with these inputs, generates a garbage collection rate. Where read load is included, a scaled portion of the read load is taken into consideration so that, as the number of free segments nears the minimum amount desired and to prevent garbage collecting too slowly, the read load is gradually excluded from the garbage collection rate determination. The garbage collection rate is therefore responsive to system load so that, in times of high system load, the rate reduces as much as is safe so that the write load takes priority with computing resources of the storage controller.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 6, 2021Publication date: January 27, 2022Applicant: NETAPP, INC.Inventor: Joseph Blount

Patent number: 11232160Abstract: A data management services architecture includes architectural components that run in both a storage and compute domains. The architectural components redirect storage requests from the storage domain to the compute domain, manage resources allocated from the compute domain, ensure compliance with a policy that governs resource consumption, deploy program code for data management services, dispatch service requests to deployed services, and monitor deployed services. The architectural components also include a service map to locate program code for data management services, and service instance information for monitoring deployed services and dispatching requests to deployed services. Since deployed services can be stateless or stateful, the services architecture also includes state data for the stateful services, with supporting resources that can expand or contract based on policy and/or service demand. The architectural components also include containers for the deployed services.Type: GrantFiled: April 5, 2019Date of Patent: January 25, 2022Assignee: NetApp, Inc.Inventors: Deepak Raghu Kenchammana-Hosekote, Shiva Chaitanya, Saeed Ghanbari, Barry Patrick Benight, David Anthony Slik

Patent number: 11232004Abstract: One or more techniques and/or computing devices are provided for automatic switchover implementation. For example, a first storage controller, of a first storage cluster, may have a disaster recovery relationship with a second storage controller of a second storage cluster. In the event the first storage controller fails, the second storage controller may automatically switchover operation from the first storage controller to the second storage controller for providing clients with failover access to data previously accessible to the clients through the first storage controller. The second storage controller may detect, cross-cluster, a failure of the first storage controller utilizing remote direct memory access (RDMA) read operations to access heartbeat information, heartbeat information stored within a disk mailbox, and/or service processor traps.Type: GrantFiled: November 13, 2019Date of Patent: January 25, 2022Assignee: NetApp, Inc.Inventors: Hrishikesh Keremane, Vijay Singh

Patent number: 11231989Abstract: Techniques are provided for remote object store error handling. A storage system may store data within one or more tiers of storage, such as a local storage tier (e.g., solid state storage and disks maintained by the storage system), a remote object store (e.g., storage provided by a third party storage provider), and/or other storage tiers. Because the remote object store may not provide the same data consistency and guarantees that the storage system provides for clients such as through the local storage tier, additional validation is provided by the storage system for the remote object store. For example, when data is put into an object of the remote object store, a verification get operation is performed to read and validate information within a header of the object. Other verifications and checks are performed such as using a locally stored metafile to detect corrupt or lost metadata and/or objects.Type: GrantFiled: November 22, 2020Date of Patent: January 25, 2022Assignee: NetApp, Inc.Inventors: Ananthan Subramanian, Ganga Bhavani Kondapalli, Cheryl Marie Thompson, Kevin Daniel Varghese, Anil Paul Thoppil, Qinghua Zheng

Patent number: 11226777Abstract: One or more techniques and/or systems are provided for cluster configuration information replication, managing cluster-wide service agents, and/or for cluster-wide outage detection. In an example of cluster configuration information replication, a replication workflow corresponding to a storage operation implemented for a storage object (e.g., renaming of a volume) of a first cluster may be transferred to a second storage cluster for selectively implementation. In an example of managing cluster-wide service agents, cluster-wide service agents are deployed to nodes of a cluster storage environment, where a master agent actively processes cluster service calls and standby agents passively wait for reassignment as a failover master in the event the master agent fails. In an example of cluster-wide outage detection, a cluster-wide outage may be determined for a cluster storage environment based upon a number of inaccessible nodes satisfying a cluster outage detection metric.Type: GrantFiled: June 9, 2020Date of Patent: January 18, 2022Assignee: NetApp, Inc.Inventors: Gregory Buzzard, Justin Travis Cady, Thomas Gilbert Snyder, Satya R. Patent number: 11226869Abstract: Techniques are provided for implementing a persistent memory storage tier to manage persistent memory of a node. The persistent memory is managed by the persistent memory storage tier at a higher level within a storage operating system storage stack than a level at which a storage file system of the node is managed. The persistent memory storage tier intercepts an operation targeting the storage file system. The persistent memory storage tier retargets the operation from targeting the storage file system to targeting the persistent memory. The operation is transmitted to the persistent memory.Type: GrantFiled: April 20, 2020Date of Patent: January 18, 2022Assignee: NetApp, Inc.Inventors: Ananthan Subramanian, Ram Kesavan, Matthew Fontaine Curtis-Maury, Mark Smith
