Patent number: 11526275Abstract: Systems and methods for sampling a set of block IDs to facilitate estimating an amount of data stored in a data set of a storage system having one or more characteristics are provided. According to an example, metadata (e.g., block headers and block IDs) may be maintained regarding multiple data blocks of the data set. When one or more metrics relating to the data set are desired, an efficiency set, representing a subset of the block IDs of the data set, may be created to facilitate efficient calculation of the metrics by statistically sampling the block IDs of the data set. Finally, the metrics may be estimated based on the efficiency set by analyzing one or more of the metadata (e.g., block headers) and the data contained in the data blocks corresponding to the subset of the block IDs and extrapolating the metrics for the entirety of the data set.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 2020Date of Patent: December 13, 2022Assignee: NetApp, Inc.Inventors: Charles Randall, Alyssa Proulx

Patent number: 11522808Abstract: Techniques are provided for a high availability solution (e.g., a network attached storage (NAS) solution) with address preservation during switchover. A first virtual machine is deployed into a first domain and a second virtual machine is deployed into a second domain of a computing environment. The first and second virtual machines are configured as a node pair for providing clients with access to data stored within an aggregate comprising one or more storage structures within shared storage of the computing environment. A load balancer is utilized to manage logical interfaces used by clients to access the virtual machines. During switchover, the load balancer preserves an IP address used to mount and access a data share of the aggregate used by a client.Type: GrantFiled: October 21, 2019Date of Patent: December 6, 2022Assignee: NetApp, Inc.Inventors: Christopher Busick, Rajesh Rajaraman, James Silva

Patent number: 11514181Abstract: A bin syncing technique ensures continuous data protection, such as replication and erasure coding, for content driven distribution of data served by storage nodes of a cluster in the event of failure to one or more block services configured to process the data. The cluster maintains information about the block services assigned to host a bin with a copy of the data in a bin assignment table associated with a state. The copies of the data are named, e.g., replica 0 (R0), replica 1 (R1) or replica 2 (R2). In response to failure of one or more block services assigned to host a bin with a replica of the data, an alternate or replacement block service may access the assignments maintained in the bin assignment table, which specify names of the replicas associated with the state.Type: GrantFiled: February 12, 2020Date of Patent: November 29, 2022Assignee: NetApp, Inc.Inventors: Austino Longo, Daniel David McCarthy, Christopher Clark Corey, Sneheet Kumar Mishra

Publication number: 20220374321Abstract: Systems and methods are described for a non-disruptive planned failover from a primary copy of data at a primary storage cluster to a mirror copy of the data at a cross-site secondary storage cluster without using an external mediator. According to an example, a planned failover feature of a multi-site distributed storage system provides an order of operations such that a primary copy of a first data center continues to serve I/O operations until a mirror copy of a second data center is ready. This planned failover feature improves functionality and efficiency of the distributed storage system by providing non-disruptiveness during planned failover without using an external mediator based on a primary storage cluster being selected as an authority to implement a state machine with a persistent configuration database to track a planned failover state for the planned failover.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 4, 2022Publication date: November 24, 2022Applicant: NetApp, Inc.Inventors: Akhil Kaushik, Anoop Vijayan

Patent number: 11507600Abstract: Techniques are provided for dependency aware parallel splitting of operations. For example, a count of pending data operations being executed by a first node and replicated in parallel to a second node are tracked. A metadata operation is executed at the first node based upon the count being less than a threshold (e.g., the count being zero). A first list of affected inodes modified by the metadata operation is identified. A dependency of the metadata operation with respect to pending metadata operations replicated to the second node is determined. The metadata operation is dispatched to the second node based upon the dependency indicating that the metadata operation is independent of the pending metadata operations.Type: GrantFiled: November 18, 2019Date of Patent: November 22, 2022Assignee: NetApp Inc.Inventors: Anoop Chakkalakkal Vijayan, Shrey Sengar, Krishna Murthy Chandraiah setty Narasingarayanapeta, Akhil Kaushik

Patent number: 11494088Abstract: The disclosed techniques enable push-based piggybacking of a source-driven logical replication system. Logical replication of a data set (e.g., a snapshot) from a source node to a destination node can be achieved from a source-driven system while preserving the effects of storage efficiency operations (deduplication) applied at the source node. However, if missing data extents are detected at the destination, the destination has an extent pulling problem as the destination may not have knowledge of the physical layout on the source-side and/or mechanisms for requesting extents. The techniques overcome the extent pulling problem in a source-driven replication system by introducing specific protocols for obtaining missing extents within an existing replication environment by piggybacking data pushes from the source.Type: GrantFiled: January 28, 2020Date of Patent: November 8, 2022Assignee: NetApp Inc.Inventors: Xin Wang, Vijay Deshmukh, Kiyoshi Komatsu, Jonathan Curley, Laura Beegle, Srishylam Simharajan, Gurmeet Singh
