Abstract: Failover methods and systems for a storage environment are provided. During a takeover operation to take over storage of a first storage system node by a second storage system node, the second storage system node copies information from a first storage location to a second storage location. The first storage location points to an active file system of the first storage system node, and the second storage location is assigned to the second storage system node for the takeover operation. The second storage system node quarantines storage space likely to be used by the first storage system node for a write operation, while the second storage system node attempts to take over the storage of the first storage system node. The second storage system node utilizes information stored at the second storage location during the takeover operation to give back control of the storage to the first storage system node.

  • Patent number: 11327857
Abstract: Techniques are provided for replay of metadata and data operations. During initial execution of operations, identifiers of objects modified by the execution of each operation are identified and stored in association with the operations. When the operations are to be replayed (e.g., executed again, such as part of a replication operation or as part of flushing content from a cache to persistent storage), the identifiers are evaluated to determine which operations are independent with respect to one another and which operations are dependent with respect to one another. In this way, independent operations are executed in parallel and dependent operations are executed serially with respect to the operations from the dependent operations depend.

  • Publication number: 20220129159
Abstract: Systems and methods for sampling a set of block IDs to facilitate estimating an amount of data stored in a data set of a storage system having one or more characteristics are provided. According to an example, metadata (e.g., block headers and block IDs) may be maintained regarding multiple data blocks of the data set. When one or more metrics relating to the data set are desired, an efficiency set, representing a subset of the block IDs of the data set, may be created to facilitate efficient calculation of the metrics by statistically sampling the block IDs of the data set. Finally, the metrics may be estimated based on the efficiency set by analyzing one or more of the metadata (e.g., block headers) and the data contained in the data blocks corresponding to the subset of the block IDs and extrapolating the metrics for the entirety of the data set.

  • Patent number: 11314558
Abstract: Methods, non-transitory machine readable media, and computing devices that dynamically throttle non-priority workloads to satisfy minimum throughput service level objectives (SLOs) are disclosed. With this technology, a determination is made when a number of detection intervals with a violation within a detection window exceeds a threshold, when a current one of the detection intervals is outside an observation area. The detection intervals are identified a violated based on an average throughput for priority workloads within the detection intervals exceeding a minimum throughput SLO. A throttle is then set to rate-limit non-priority workloads, when the number of violated detection intervals within the detection window exceeds the threshold.

  • Patent number: 11316742
Abstract: A method for managing a resource configuration of a heterogeneously managed computer system. During processing of a resource management request, retrieving a set of resource tags are retrieved. Each resource tag associates a local resource identifier that is assigned within a first configuration management domain with an index identifier that is assigned within a second configuration management naming domain. The retrieved tags are mutually associated utilizing the index identifiers to generating a system configuration map. The resource management request is compared with the system configuration map to identify target resources and corresponding target resource information. One or more resource queries are generated based on the identified target resource and corresponding target resource information.

  • Publication number: 20220113888
Abstract: Systems and methods for enhancing the representation of outliers in a distribution of telemetry data of a monitored system are provided. According to one embodiment, telemetry data of the monitored system may be continuously collected. Frequency values representing a frequency of occurrence of corresponding telemetry data of the collected telemetry data may be generated by aggregating the collected telemetry data. As the vast majority of telemetry data is expected to represent a normal operating state of the system and relatively few, if any, of the telemetry data (e.g., outliers) will be indicative of one or more events of significance, the resulting distribution of the frequency values is highly skewed. In order to facilitate visualization of the distribution that accentuates the outliers, display characteristics may be calculated for the frequency values by applying a visualization model based on a weighted combination of multiple data transformations to each of the frequency values.

  • Patent number: 11301139
Abstract: Systems and methods that result in a stable storage system are provided. In the storage system, the latency spikes may be reduced when multiple volumes are aggregated into transfer sets according to system characteristics. The storage system transfers ownership of volumes in each transfer set as a single transaction. In the storage system, connectivity between the host and the storage controller is re-established based on the connectivity in a physical transport layer and a single path. In the storage system, pre-mature failback is also avoided when ownership of volumes is transferred back to a preferred storage controller when the same number of paths existed between the host and the preferred storage controller before and after a failover operation. Further, the storage system generates connectivity reports that display connectivity paths between hosts, storage controllers, and volumes.

  • Patent number: 11301450
Abstract: Techniques are provided for maintaining timestamp parity during a transition replay phase to a synchronous state. During a transition logging phase where metadata operations executed by a primary node are logged into a metadata log and regions modified by data operations executed by the primary node are tracked within a dirty region log, a close stream operation to close a stream associated with a basefile of the primary node is identified. A determination is made as to whether the dirty region log comprises an entry for the stream indicating that a write data operation previously modified the stream. In an example, in response to the dirty region log comprising the entry, an indicator is set to specify that the stream was deleted by the close stream operation. In another example, a modify timestamp of the basefile is logged into the metadata log for subsequent replication to the secondary node.

  • Patent number: 11288003
Abstract: To replicate a source LUN to a different storage system platform, a first storage system transmits a request to replicate a LUN along with attributes for the LUN to a second storage system. The second storage system maps the attributes to attributes used and understood by the platform of the second storage system. The second storage system then creates a destination LUN based on the mapped attributes. Since the destination LUN is created with similar attributes as the source LUN, the destination LUN can store the replicated data of the source LUN while still being accessed and recognized as a LUN by the second storage system. The second storage system also stores any proprietary attributes received from the first storage system so that the proprietary attributes can be supplied to the first storage system to recover the source LUN after a data loss event.

  • Patent number: 11290545
Abstract: Described herein are method and apparatus for servicing software components of nodes of a cluster storage system. During data-access sessions with clients, client IDs and file handles for accessing files are produced and stored to clients and stored (as session data) to each node. A serviced node is taken offline, whereby network connections to clients are disconnected. Each disconnected client is configured to retain its client ID and file handles and attempt reconnections. Session data of the serviced node is made available to a partner node (by transferring session data to the partner node). After clients have reconnected to the partner node, the clients may use the retained client IDs and file handles to continue a data-access session with the partner node since the partner node has access to the session data of the serviced node and thus will recognize and accept the retained client ID and file handles.

  • Publication number: 20220091943
Abstract: Data protection methods and systems for a storage environment are provided. A first-in-first out (FIFO) structure stores a logical representation of a first storage location that retains previous data for a data container, after new data for the data container is stored at a second storage location. The FIFO structure also stores a logical representation of a file system tree structure that is stored in persistent storage, after a consistent point operation. In response to an event, the file system tree structure is selected, based on the file system tree structure being closest to a transaction. A snapshot is generated using the file system tree structure. Thereafter, the data container is restored from the snapshot or from a copy of the snapshot.

  • Patent number: 11269744
Abstract: Failover methods and systems for a networked storage environment are provided. A filtering data structure and a metadata data structure are generated before starting a replay of a log stored in a non-volatile memory of a second storage node, during a failover operation initiated in response to a failure at a first storage node. The second storage node operates as a partner node of the first storage node to mirror at the log one or more write requests received by the first storage node prior to the failure, and data associated with the one or more write requests. The filtering data structure identifies each log entry and the metadata structure stores a metadata attribute of each log entry. The filtering data structure and the metadata structure are used for providing access to a logical storage object during the log replay from the second storage node.
