  • Patent number: 10606803
Abstract: Method, apparatus and product for data cloning in a memory-based file systems. A content of each object of the file system is retained in data units and represented using a tree of the nodes comprising tree nodes and leaf nodes. The file system utilizes a volatile resource usage collection and volatile reference counters for each node of the nodes. In response to mounting the file system, a storage retaining a file system metadata is scanned to compile the volatile resource usage collection and the volatile reference counters. In response to a determination to reuse a pointed node of a tree of an object by a pointing node, a volatile reference counter of the pointed node is updated and the pointing node is atomically set, using a single instruction, to point to the pointed node.

  • Patent number: 10606795
Abstract: A method, non-transitory computer readable medium, and data storage computing device that obtains data to be stored in a buffer in a buffer cache, determines a priority of the buffer based on the data, identifies one of a set of global recycle queues based on the priority, and inserts the buffer and metadata into the global recycle queue. When the global recycle queue is determined to be a lowest priority global recycle queue and the buffer is determined to be a least recently used buffer, the buffer is removed from the global recycle queue and inserted into a per-thread recycle queue. When the buffer is least recently used in the per-thread recycle queue, the buffer is removed from the per-thread recycle queue and placed in a free pool. With this technology, buffer cache can be more efficiently managed, particularly with respect to aging and scavenging operations, among other advantages.

  • Patent number: 10592464
Abstract: Methods, non-transitory computer readable media and computing device that enabling direct memory access (DMA) capable devices for remote DMA (RDMA) are illustrated. With this technology, a first network message is inserted into a first location of a remote memory region of a computing device via DMA. The remote memory region is defined in an anchor record retrieved from a shared memory of the computing device. A local head pointer is synchronized, via DMA, with a remote head pointer stored by the computing device. The local and remote head pointers correspond to the first location of the remote memory region of the computing device. Following receipt of a DMA completion message, a notification message is sent, via DMA, to the computing device indicating that the network message has been transferred.

  • Patent number: 10585611
Abstract: One or more techniques and/or computing devices are provided for inline deduplication. For example, a checksum hash table and/or a block number hash table may be maintained within memory (e.g., a storage controller may maintain the hash tables in-core). The checksum hash table may be utilized for inline deduplication to identify potential donor blocks that may comprise the same data as an incoming storage operation. Data within an in-core buffer cache is eligible as potential donor blocks so that inline deduplication may be performed using data from the in-core buffer cache, which may mitigate disk access to underlying storage for which the in-core buffer cache is used for caching. The block number hash table may be used for updating or removing entries from the hash tables, such as for blocks that are no longer eligible as potential donor blocks (e.g., deleted blocks, blocks evicted from the in-core buffer cache, etc.).

  • Patent number: 10587685
Abstract: To replicate a source LUN to a different storage system platform, a first storage system transmits a request to replicate a LUN along with attributes for the LUN to a second storage system. The second storage system maps the attributes to attributes used and understood by the platform of the second storage system. The second storage system then creates a destination LUN based on the mapped attributes. Since the destination LUN is created with similar attributes as the source LUN, the destination LUN can store the replicated data of the source LUN while still being accessed and recognized as a LUN by the second storage system. The second storage system also stores any proprietary attributes received from the first storage system so that the proprietary attributes can be supplied to the first storage system to recover the source LUN after a data loss event.

  • Patent number: 10579540
Abstract: A system and method for improving storage system operation is disclosed. A storage system includes a first tier with high-performance redundancy and a second tier with capacity efficient redundancy. The first tier and the second tier are built from the same storage devices in a storage pool so each storage device includes both the first and second tiers. The storage system stores write data initially to the first tier. When demand for the data falls below a threshold, the storage system migrates the write data to the second tier. This is done by changing the mapping of underlying physical locations on the storage devices where the write data is stored so that the underlying physical locations are logically associated with the second tier instead of the first tier. After remapping, the storage system also computes parity information for the migrated write data and stores it in the second tier.

  • Patent number: 10565165
Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for performing selective deduplication in a storage system are introduced herein. Techniques are provided for determining a first deduplication priority for a first data object based upon a first projected likelihood that deduplication of the first data object will provide a storage space benefit to reduce storage consumption of a storage device. Inline deduplication is performed for the first data object based upon the first deduplication priority exceeding a deduplication probability threshold that is indicative of inline deduplication of the first data object having a threshold likelihood of achieving the storage space benefit from inline deduplication.

  • Patent number: 10565230
Abstract: A technique preserves efficiency for replication of data between a source node of a source cluster (“source”) and a destination node of a destination cluster (“destination”) of a clustered network. Replication in the clustered network may be effected by leveraging global in-line deduplication at the source to identify and avoid copying duplicate data from the source to the destination. To ensure that the copy of the data on the destination is synchronized with the data received at the source, the source creates a snapshot of the data for use as a baseline copy at the destination. Thereafter, new data received at the source that differs from the baseline snapshot are transmitted and copied to the destination. In addition, the source and destination nodes negotiate to establish a mapping of name-to-data when transferring data (i.e., an extent) between the clusters.

  • Patent number: 10558375
Abstract: One or more techniques and/or systems are provided for implementing storage level access control for data grouping structures. For example, a storage level access guard may be defined for a data grouping structure (e.g., a Qtree, a portion of a volume, etc.) of a storage device. The storage level access guard may be defined at a storage level of the storage device such that clients and/or certain administrators such as domain administrators may be restricted from accessing and/or changing the storage level access guard, which may increase data security. A hidden and unmodifiable property may be applied to the storage level access guard, which may be stored in a directory associated with the data grouping structure so that a logical replication of the data grouping structure may also replicate the storage level access guard.

  • Patent number: 10558538
Abstract: Distributed storage systems frequently use a centralized metadata repository that stores metadata in an eventually consistent distributed database. However, a metadata repository cannot be relied upon for determining which erasure coded fragments are lost because of a storage node(s) failures. Instead, when recovering a failed storage node, a list of missing fragments is generated based on fragments stored in storage devices of available storage nodes. A storage node performing the recovery sends a request to one or more of the available storage nodes for a fragment list. The fragment list is generated, not based on a metadata database, but on scanning storage devices for fragments related to the failed storage node. The storage node performing the recovery merges retrieved lists to create a master list indicating fragments that should be regenerated for recovery of the failed storage node(s).

  • Patent number: 10552064
Abstract: One or more techniques and/or computing devices are provided for utilizing snapshots for data integrity validation and/or faster application recovery. For example, a first storage controller, hosting first storage, has a synchronous replication relationship with a second storage controller hosting second storage. A snapshot replication policy rule is defined to specify that a replication label is to be used for snapshot create requests, targeting the first storage, that are to be replicated to the second storage. A snapshot creation policy is created to issue snapshot create requests comprising the replication label. Thus a snapshot of the first storage and a replication snapshot of the second storage are created based upon a snapshot create request comprising the replication label. The snapshot and the replication snapshot may be compared for data integrity validation (e.g., determine whether the snapshots comprise the same data) and/or quickly recovering an application after a disaster.

  • Patent number: 10552057
Abstract: A method, non-transitory computer readable medium and storage server computing device that determines when a generated storage operation corresponds with one of a set of predefined storage operations. The storage operation is executed and a result of the execution of the storage operation is withheld from a file system, when the determining indicates that the storage operation corresponds with one of the set of predefined storage operations. A determination is made when a consistency point operation has completed. The result of the execution of the storage operation is presented to the file system, when the determining indicates that a consistency point operation has completed. This technology reduces the number of storage operations that are required to be journaled to maintain consistency of a file system, thereby reducing the runtime resources required to facilitate the journaling and replay resource required to replay the storage operations in a journal following a recovery.
