Abstract: System and method for downloading portions of a remotely located network object to produce a completely downloaded local copy of the network object. The system and method include and involve a server facility and a software delegate. The server facility is configured to store and to serve the software delegate and a network object. The server facility is further configured to be accessed by a client via an electronic data network, such as the Internet and WWW. The software delegate can reside and be executed on a client, and is configured to control the downloading of portions of a network object from the server facility to the client via the electronic data network, until a completely downloaded copy is stored locally on the client.

Abstract: System and method for facilitating distributed server administration of network server systems that are scalable and version independent. The system and method include and involve a server and a client administrator. The server is configured to store and to serve a software package that corresponds to a server software system of the server. The server is further configured to be accessed by client administrator via an electronic data network, such as the Internet and World Wide Web (WWW). The client administrator is configured to access the server, to receive the software package, and to process the software package to conform to the specifications of the server. Execution of the software package allows the server to be administered by the client administrator without requiring the client administrator to be pre-configured with knowledge of the server.

Abstract: Various embodiments of systems and methods for using condition defining data (e.g., access control instructions) attached to nodes in a tree to implement node-related conditions in a directory server having a tree structure are disclosed. In one embodiment, a method includes attaching condition defining data that includes a variable portion and a reference portion to a given node in the tree structure, and upon access to a subnode of said given node in the tree, using the reference portion and a property of the subnode to tentatively derive a value for the variable portion, changing the variable portion into the value, and evaluating the condition in said condition defining data.

Abstract: A system and method for manifesting content received via the Internet by an automatic data processing system includes and involves a content retrieval module for retrieving content from the Internet. The content is arranged to be manifested by the automatic data processing system. Also included and involved is a content manifestation module that is coupled to the content retrieval module. The content manifestation module is operable to receive a replaceable software delegate during its operation, and to manifest the content within the automatic data processing system in accordance with the replaceable software delegate. The replaceable software delegate controls the manifestation of the content by the content manifestation module.

Abstract: A mouse for use with an automatic data processing system having a display device for displaying objects. The mouse is configured to be operated by movement of an operator's hand and includes a positioning system for controlling a position of a pointer within the display device of the automatic data processing system. The mouse also includes a selection button for selecting an object displayed within the display device and which is pointed to by the pointer. The selection button is configured to generate a signal to be processed by the automatic data processing system. The selection button is operable in accordance with movement of a palm section of the operator's hand.

Abstract: A system and method for automatically generating content for distribution via a network channel includes and involves a channel service provider that has a first automatic data processing system that includes a data storage sub-system for storing a network document and a first processor that is operative to specify a section of the network document to be broadcast via the network channel and to automatically scan the network document to extract and store the section of the network document in a network addressable resource within the data storage sub-system. The system and method also includes and involves a second automatic data processing system which is coupled to the channel service provider and which includes a content manifestation device and a second processor that is operative to access the network addressable resource to retrieve the section of the network document and to cause the content manifestation device to manifest the section of the network document.

Abstract: Dynamic video images are integrated with HTML text in web browsers to provide links to other predetermined locations containing information (web pages or information in other formats) by selecting a feature of a dynamic video image, storing an image map file, generating a unique feature specific to the selected dynamic video image (such as color intensity, text data, audio data, or layer information) and correlating the detail information to the image map file.

Abstract: A new computer interface displays a plurality of icons representative of people, documents and time. Various functions, including media independent functions, for interacting between these three elements, including composing, routing (collaborative or otherwise), are disclosed.

Abstract: A browser accesses a remote server over a network, where the server has a URL containing a protocol portion and a server portion. The browser includes a user interface for allowing a viewer to type in said server portion. The typed-in server portion is one of a plurality of possible server portions, each possible server portion having a corresponding protocol portion. The protocol portion that corresponds to the typed-in server portion is determined in response to the typed-in server portion. A complete URL is generated by attaching the determined protocol portion to the typed-in server portion. A connection is opened with the remote server using the generated URL.

Abstract: A method and system for generating a database query language request for performing a join between a plurality of database tables including a first database table and a second database table. The first table includes a first plurality of fields and the second database table includes a second plurality of fields, where each one of the plurality of fields has a particular meaning. The method and system includes providing a plurality of expressions that communicate the meaning of the each of the fields in the first and second plurality of fields. A user then submits a query requesting information from the tables in the form of a conjunction of literals. Each of the literals are then mapped to all matching expressions to provide a list of fields to be queried. The list of fields includes a first field from the first table and a second field from the second table, such that the mapping indicates that the first and second fields have the same meaning.
