    Abstract: A slicer for a decision feedback error equalizer system that processes trellis encoded data using the ATSC trellis code is implemented in two parts. A first part includes a trellis decoder that estimates a single bit of the symbol. The second part includes two partial trellis decoders. A multiplexer directs the received digital samples to one of the two trellis decoders responsive to the estimated symbol. An alternative slicer estimates two bits of the output symbols and selects from among four decoders to fully decode the symbols. The slicer is used in an equalizer having adaptive filters that may operate either on passband or baseband signals. The slicer is used both to recover the carrier signal on which the symbols are modulated and to provide symbols to the second filter that are used to determine filter coefficients for the second filter.

    Abstract: A wireless local area network allows roaming of a mobile unit to allow it to serially associate with a number of access points of the network fixed backbone. This roaming is supported by an improved measurement of communications link quality, which includes calculating a mean error free length of a test pattern broadcast by each access point and received by a mobile unit. The test pattern is a digital data message. Thus an accurate measurement of link quality is provided which allows a mobile unit to determine whether it should change its association to another access point having improved communications link quality. Further, a load balancing process is provided to balance the communications load amongst a variety of access points, by allowing mobile units also to switch their association with access points in accordance with a current total data rate at any given access point and also considering the number of currently high data rate mobile units associated with a particular access point at any one time.

    Abstract: A network with wireless links is a dynamic learning system which allows a mobile (wireless) unit to determine which access point (wired) unit provides the mobile unit with the best communications as the mobile unit roams within an area and from area to area. As a mobile unit enters a new area, it scans the area to find an access point unit. After the mobile unit is verified by the access point unit, the mobile unit receives updated information about other access points in the area, including information indicating which access point units are within wireless transmission range of the mobile unit as well as multiple values indicating a communication range for a particular access point unit to the mobile unit. The information is updated as the system gathers new information through the mobile units and access point units within the system area.

    Abstract: A wireless local area network includes a radio transmitter/receiver for transmitting and receiving in accordance with the FCC rules for the ISM band. The receiver/transmitter supports spread spectrum frequency hopping in the 2.4 GHz ISM band and can be tuned to one of e.g. 82 different frequencies spaced at 1 MHz intervals. The radio transmitter/receiver is a low cost, low power, small size unit located on a printed circuit board in a PCMCIA form factor. Third order mixers are used in combination with a switched prescaler for a low cost and compact frequency control system capable of rapid switching of the radio between transmitting and receiving functions. No special shielding is needed between the frequency control circuitry and the receiver IF circuitry.

Each mobile unit scans traffic on the network communications channel (typically frequency hopping radio transmissions using spread spectrum). The transmission includes information indicating which access point units are within radio range of the mobile unit as well as multiple values indicating a communication range for a particular access point unit to the mobile unit.
