The distance is approximately 36 inches for a vehicle having a mass of at least about 15,000 pounds and traveling at least about 30 mph upon impact with the barrier. The barrier system includes a fence portion and/or a gate for selectively allowing passage through an entry port. The fence portion includes a pair of terminal posts positioned in and secured to the ground in a spaced apart relationship and cables connected between the terminal posts. The gate includes a cable extending across a panel that is connected on opposing ends to opposing posts positioned on opposite sides of the entry point. For passage the panel is moved relative to the posts.
