Patent number: 4433100Abstract: Synthetic resins suitable for use in printing ink compositions are produced by reacting a mixture consisting essentially of (a) a predominant amount of dicyclopentadiene and lesser amounts of (b) at least one hydrocarbon selected from the group consisting of monoolefins, diolefins, and polyenes each having more than five carbon atoms, and having no aromatic rings, and (c) at least one member selected from the group consisting of fatty acid-containing materials and rosin acid-containing materials. Additional synthetic resins suitable for use in printing ink compositions are produced by reacting components (a) to (c) above with an ethylenically unsaturated lower aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or anhydride, such as maleic anhydride.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 1982Date of Patent: February 21, 1984Assignee: Neville Chemical CompanyInventor: James J. Patent number: 4189407Abstract: An improved chlorinated hydrocarbon is provided which is uniquely compatible with polysulfide rubber sealant formulations when incorporated as a plasticizer therein. Paraffins or alpha-olefins containing from 16 to 20 carbon atoms per molecule or mixtures or blends of paraffins or alpha-olefins containing 16 to 20 carbon atoms per molecule are chlorinated to a final chlorine content of from between 52 and 58 weight percent chlorine. The chlorinated hydrocarbons are compatible with polysulfide rubber sealant formulations while still maintaining the necessary low viscosity and volatility when incorporated as a plasticizer therein. A modified polysulfide rubber sealant formulation is disclosed which incorporates as a plasticizer the improved chlorinated hydrocarbon, and which is useful as a glass or window sealant. The improved plasticizer is non-fogging in a polysulfide rubber formulation.Type: GrantFiled: October 20, 1976Date of Patent: February 19, 1980Assignee: Neville Chemical CompanyInventor: Cyril J. Yaggi, Jr.

Patent number: 4189408Abstract: An improved chlorinated hydrocarbon is provided which is uniquely compatible with polysulfide rubber sealant formulations when incorporated as a plasticizer therein. Certain paraffins or alpha-olefins and blends thereof when chlorinated to selected final chlorine contents are compatible with polysulfide rubber sealant formulations while still maintaining the necessary low viscosity and volatility when incorporated as a plasticizer therein. The improved plasticizers are not subject to significant heat loss. Modified polysulfide rubber sealant formulations are disclosed which incorporate as a plasticizer the improved chlorinated hydrocarbon, and which are useful as glass or window sealants, particularly as glass or window sealants between the panes of a thermal pane or multi-pane insulating window structure. The improved plasticizers are non-fogging in polysulfide rubber formulations and are not subject to significant heat loss.Type: GrantFiled: December 8, 1977Date of Patent: February 19, 1980Assignee: Neville Chemical CompanyInventor: Cyril J. Patent number: 4189410Abstract: Synthetic resins suitable for use in printing ink compositions are produced by typically forming a base resin by polymerizing a reaction mixture consisting essentially of (a) a predominant amount of dicyclopentadiene and lesser amounts of (b) at least one hydrocarbon-containing material selected from the group consisting of debutanized aromatic concentrates, C.sub.5 olefins and acyclic, conjugated C.sub.5 dienes, and (c) at least one member selected from the group consisting of fatty acid-containing materials and rosin acid-containing materials. The base resin may be modified through a reaction with an ethylenically unsaturated lower aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or anhydride, such as maleic anhydride.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1978Date of Patent: February 19, 1980Assignee: Neville Chemical CompanyInventor: James J. Patent number: 4056498Abstract: Synthetic resins suitable for use in printing ink compositions are produced by forming a base resin by polymerizing a reaction mixture consisting essentially of (a) a predominate amount of dicyclopentadiene and lesser amounts of (b) a mixture of dimerized conjugated aliphatic cyclic and non-cyclic dienes of five carbon atoms, and (c) tall oil. In a separate reaction the base resin is modified through a reaction with an ethylenically unsaturated lower aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or anhydride, such an maleic anhydride.Type: GrantFiled: January 17, 1974Date of Patent: November 1, 1977Assignee: Neville Chemical CompanyInventor: James J. Production of ethyl cellulose-compatible phenol-modified hydrocarbon resins for use in printing inks
Patent number: 3993626Abstract: Ethyl cellulose-compatible phenol-modified hydrocarbon resins are produced by polymerizing a reaction mixture containing indene, vinyl toluene, and dicyclopentadiene as the essential polymerizable constituents in the presence of a phenol compound and a Friedel-Crafts type catalyst such as boron trifluoride phenol complex. The phenol-modified hydrocarbon resin has a ring and ball softening point of above about 120.degree. C, a solution viscosity (Gardner-Holdt, sec.) of between about 0.7 and about 15, a hydroxyl number of above about 10, and is ethyl hydroxyethyl cellulose compatible as well as ethyl cellulose compatible. Thus, these resins are particularly useful as replacements for rosin and rosin derivatives in rotogravure printing ink.Type: GrantFiled: December 12, 1974Date of Patent: November 23, 1976Assignee: Neville Chemical CompanyInventor: James J.
