Patent number: 5730017Abstract: A cutter unit for mounting to a slide on a spring coiling machine, comprising a holder having an arm portion, extending along a first direction, for mounting to the coiling machine and a head portion extending along a second direction perpendicular to the first direction and defining an adjustable bore having an axis which extends in a third direction perpendicular to the first and second directions. A plug is insertable coaxially within the adjustable bore and sized to provide axial and rotational degrees of freedom within the bore. The plug includes a front face having a slot oriented transversely to the axis of the bore and sized to receive a cutting tool, and screws or the like for fixing the tool in the slot. A bolt or the like is carried by the head portion, for adjusting the bore to selectively permit axial and rotational movement of the insert therein, and to prevent said movement.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 1995Date of Patent: March 24, 1998Assignee: Newcomb Spring CorporationInventor: John D. Patent number: 5647240Abstract: A spring coiling machine wherein the pitch tool holder has two active plates which act as a clamp on the stem of the pitch tool. Preferably, the clamping plates are carried on a support based plate or the like, which is moveable linearly in a direction parallel to the pitch stem axis.Type: GrantFiled: July 28, 1995Date of Patent: July 15, 1997Assignee: Newcomb Spring CorporationInventor: John D. Patent number: 5259227Abstract: A chuck and arbor apparatus for a spring coiling machine implements an accurate alignment of the block wire guide with the feed line guides from the wire supply rolls. The chuck is modified to provide for discrete, axial clamping positions which correspond to selected wire alignment positions. The arbor is preferably D-shaped to establish a repeatable angular orientation in the chuck, and avoid the need to clamp the arbor while clamping the chuck.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 1992Date of Patent: November 9, 1993Assignee: Newcomb Spring CorporationInventor: John D. Patent number: 5218882Abstract: The hub body has an annular support region, spacer regions on either side of the support region, and threaded regions at the axial ends. Each threaded region has an axially extending slot. First and second cam rings, which each have an inner opening with an effective diameter that is less than the outer diameter of the support region and substantially equal to the outer diameter of the spacer regions, are situated in respective spacer regions in abutting relationship with respective sides of the support ring. Respective first and second spacer rings having inner diameters substantially equal to those of the cams, are also situated in the spacer region in abutting relationship with the cams, so that each cam is sandwiched between one side of the support region and a spacer ring. Each spacer ring has a tab or key member projecting radially inwardly from the spacer ring inner diameter into the slot.Type: GrantFiled: February 18, 1992Date of Patent: June 15, 1993Assignee: Newcomb Spring CorporationInventor: John D. Patent number: 5201208Abstract: A coiling point holder for a spring making machine precisely fixes the angular and axial position of the coiling point relative to the holder and allows for the pre-established coiling point positions to be replicated upon reversing or replacing the coiling point. The angular position of the coiling point is fixed by a diametral slot of an insert which is angularly fixed in the holder.Type: GrantFiled: November 4, 1991Date of Patent: April 13, 1993Assignee: Newcomb Spring CorporationInventor: John D.
