Abstract: A system and method for monitoring clinched joints senses lateral displacement of die segments during formation of a joint, which depends on joint button diameter. The system determines whether a joint is acceptable by correlating acceptable button diameter with acceptable amount of punch advancement. A predetermined number of unacceptable joints indicates excessive punch and/or die wear.
Abstract: A fastener system for use with an air bag includes a fastener having a rounded base having a flat portion, and first and second arms oriented transverse to the flat portion. A first set of engagement devices is connected proximate the rounded base. A second set of engagement devices is connected spatially separated from both the first set and the rounded base. A vehicle component has a dog-house. The rounded base is received and engaged in a dog-house cavity connecting the fastener and vehicle component. The vehicle component displaces upon air bag deployment from a first engagement position having the first engagement device set engaged with a vehicle body panel, to a second engagement position having the second engagement device set engaged with the vehicle body panel. A second fastener sliding part allows telescopic extension of the vehicle component.

Abstract: A lock cylinder has a reset condition wherein the lock cylinder can be put into a “learn” mode. In the “learn” mode, the original key can be removed and replaced by replacement key and, when the replacement key is removed, the lock cylinder 10 is rekeyed to the new key. The original key no longer operates the rekeyed lock cylinder 10.
Abstract: A cylinder lock assembly includes a cylinder body and a plug assembly which is manufactured in a multiple of pieces to facilitate casting of each plug piece in a single operation. The plug assembly includes a plug body with a plug insert opening to receive a plug insert. The plug insert opening is generally L-shaped in cross-section to receive the plug insert which is correspondingly shaped. The plug insert includes a plug outer portion which defines an arcuate outer surface which corresponds with the outer circumference of the plug body when the plug insert is mounted therein. A plug pin chamber portion extends generally transverse to the plug outer portion to define a multiple of tumbler pin chambers which extend through the plug outer portion.
Abstract: Two-clip tubular fasteners are used to clamp a sheet-like member between flanges of the clips. An apparatus and method for attaching an undercover to the underside of a vehicle floor panel having a plurality of studs comprises a plurality of the tubular fasteners that are inserted into respective mounting holes of the undercover and that are engaged with the studs. At least some of the mounting holes provide diametral clearance with respect to corresponding tubular fasteners. The flanges of those fasteners exert a predetermined clamping force on the undercover while permitting planar movement of the undercover. One of the flanges has a configuration that engages a cooperable configuration on the undercover to prevent undesired turning of a first clip relative to a second clip.
Abstract: A blind rivet includes a hollow rivet body having a longitudinally extending indented groove. The groove may be shaped to impart rivet setting characteristics that may be varied to provide desirable fastening characteristics for joints in a number of industries. The shape of the indentation on the rivet body may be varied to cause a portion of the rivet body to collapse and form a secondary head at a predetermined longitudinal location.

Abstract: A lock cylinder having a keyway includes a first plurality of guide channels. A plurality of cup-shaped pins is movably disposed within the first plurality of guide channels. Each cup-shaped pin of the plurality of cup-shaped pins extends across the keyway. Each cup-shaped pin of the plurality of cup-shaped pins has an engagement protrusion. The first plurality of guide channels conform to the shape of the plurality of cup-shaped pins to allow movement of the plurality of cup-shaped pins in a first direction while restraining movement transverse to the first direction. A plurality of biasing springs is positioned to bias the plurality of cup-shaped pins in a direction toward the keyway. A plurality of racks is movably disposed in a second plurality of guide channels. Each rack of the plurality of racks has at least one engagement groove to selectively receive the engagement protrusion of a respective cup-shaped pin.
Abstract: Described here is a method for pretreating the surfaces of weld parts of aluminum or alloys thereof, and weld parts produced with said method. Prior to welding, the weld parts are subjected to a treatment (17) in an acidic, aqueous solution, wherein the acidic, aqueous solution contains ions of the elements boron and/or silicon and/or titanium and/or zirconium and/or hafnium. The invention consists in that a polishing step (9) is carried out prior to the treatment in the acidic, aqueous solution to make for better sliding in a feed apparatus during the welding process.
Abstract: A disk-shaped object of synthetic thermoplastic material has contact surfaces on opposite sides that possess a rough texture. In a method for production of the disk-shaped object, synthetic material is injected under pressure in a plasticized state into a cooled molding tool and removed therefrom after a cooling phase, the molding tool having correspondingly rough molding surfaces to form the rough contact surfaces of the object.
Abstract: A fastener assembly includes a metal first component having two flange portions defining a receiving slot therebetween, and a polymeric component received in the receiving slot in an assembled position. When rotated 90 degrees the second component outwardly displaces first and second deflectable wings of the first component to extended positions.

Abstract: A helical-shaped insert to engage a threaded fastener to a receiving member includes a helical coil having a plurality of coil sections having inner and outer surfaces forming a thread shape, and opposing first and second coil end sections. A removable tang extends radially inward from the first coil end section. A continuously curved surface at a finished end of the second coil end section forms a tangent point where the continuously curved surface tangentially meets the second coil end section outer surface. A notch in the first coil end section proximate to the tang and positioned between the inner and outer surfaces permits removal of the tang by mechanical failure at the notch. A second notch in the second coil end section and the continuously curved surface assist coil removal.

Abstract: A fastener comprising a bush and a pin is used to mount an airbag on a vehicle body panel. The pin has a head with legs depending therefrom, and the bush has a flange with a shank depending therefrom. The shank supports resilient pawls moveable in slots. The legs of the pin are inserted into the slots to a temporary connection position at which the resilient pawls are free to move inward of the slots, and to a permanent connection position at which such movement is blocked. The bush shank has a rigid axial column between the slots. The flange has a pair of spaced upright walls defining a space for receiving the pin and for preventing the head of the pin from being pressed inadvertently.
Abstract: A fastener first member connects to a second member by a flexible tether. A third member having multiple deflectable wings slides onto the second member. A first member male pin extends through a third member aperture to engage second member biasing elements, joining the first, second and third members.

Abstract: The invention relates to a joining head arrangement for joining components, such as studs, onto a workpiece. The joining head arrangement comprises a housing and a slide that is mounted on the housing and is movable, by means of a linear drive, in a joining direction in relation to the housing. The joining head further comprises a component holder, arranged on the slide, and operable to hold a component during a joining operation. A feed device delivers components, at a transfer location, to the component holder. The component holder is rotatable about an axis, which is aligned transversely relative to the joining direction, from a transfer position to a joining position.
