Abstract: Systems and methods for allocating radio frequency resources are provided. The radio frequency resources are allocated to a mobile station in time or frequency alignment based on signal quality measures. In an orthogonal frequency division multiple access system, the allocated radio frequency resources include one or more tones and one or more symbols.

Abstract: Antenna arrangements that include two or more antennas in an enclosure are provided. Each of these antennas can be tuned to a separate frequency band and/or can support a different wireless communication technology. The downtilt of the antennas can be electrically and/or mechanically controlled, and various feeder arrangements can be employed.

Abstract: A system and method for handoff are provided. A mobile station performs a make-before-break handoff of a control channel between a serving and target base station and a break-before-make handoff of a traffic channel between the serving and target base stations. The traffic channel handoff is performed after the control channel handoff has completed.

Abstract: A wireless communication system useful in locating users of mobile communication units (MUs) in emergency situations. In one embodiment, the system includes a plurality of aircraft-deployable, wireless position determining equipment (PDE) to generate position information from an emergency call request received from an MU, and a wireless mobile positioning center (MPC) on board an aircraft adapted to determine the location of the MU from the position information received from the PDE. In another embodiment, the PDE are adapted to transmit a message to elicit a response from the MU to acquire position information. In another embodiment, the PDE are adapted to receive periodic messages from the MU to acquire position information. In another embodiment, a mobile switching center (MSC) assists a GPS-capable MU in determining its location by providing it the information on the GPS satellites visible within the area covered by its base station and sector.

Abstract: An inter-working network facilitating group communications among subscribers spanning a plurality of disparate dispatch networks, a signaling controller, a media gateway, a system for facilitating the monetization of inter-carrier dispatch communications and a group management server. The signaling controller and media gateway generate dispatch call records for dispatch sessions facilitated through the inter-working network. The system includes a billing accumulator and a settlement entity. The billing accumulator is interfaced with the inter-working network and includes logic to receive and store the dispatch call data records from the inter-working architecture. The settlement entity is interfaced with the billing accumulator, and includes settlement logic for converting each stored dispatch call data record to a billing record for each of at least two of the dispatch networks. The group management server is interfaced with group management servers in each of the dispatch networks.

Abstract: Systems and methods for a mobile universal communication gateway are provided. The mobile universal communication gateway can bridge a mobile station located in a personal area network with one or more wide area networks. The mobile universal communication gateway can select one or more backhaul communication links to the one or more wide area networks based on a variety of factors such as available bandwidth, access cost, traffic loads and the like. The mobile universal communication gateway can also include a non-volatile storage area to store information for mobile stations of the personal area network.

Abstract: An architecture and method for intercepting communications in a communications network is disclosed. The architecture includes a first access device that captures call identifying information of a call to the communications network and transmits the captured call identifying information to a network infrastructure of the communications network over a communications channel that interconnects the first access device to the network infrastructure. The architecture also includes a second access device that resides within the network infrastructure and captures call content information of the call. The method includes the steps of capturing call identifying information of the call to the communications network by the first access device, transmitting the captured call identifying information to the network infrastructure over the communications channel, and capturing call content information of the call by the second access device.

Abstract: A system and method for optimizing handoff processing in networks with fully collapsed base station routers is disclosed. In accordance with exemplary embodiments of the present invention, handoff processing is optimized by allowing base station routers to automatically discover, and maintain lists of, their neighbor base station routers. Using the list of discovered neighbor base station routers, a base station router polls its neighbors for a list of all active users. The base station router then polls the Context Transfer Server (CTS) database for these users' contexts. Accordingly, instead of polling the CTS database during handoff, the present invention allows a base station router to activate the context from local memory.

Abstract: Systems and methods for providing location based services are provided. Location based services can include establishing a call between mobile stations when the mobile stations are within a predetermined distance from each other. The location based services can also include providing an originating mobile station with a relative distance to a destination mobile station. The locations of the originating and destination mobile stations can be determined using a timing advance value and information used for a smart antenna array.

Abstract: Disclosed are systems and methods for providing a carrier-independent calling-party-pays system. In one embodiment, upon having a call routed to a mobile switching center from a calling party, the mobile switching center determines if the called party is a calling-party-pays (CPP) customer. Depending on whether the called party is a CPP customer or not, the mobile switching center may bill only the calling party, or both the calling party and the called party.

Abstract: In an embodiment of a method of the present invention, the method includes the acts of establishing a dispatch multi-party call between a set of communication devices and establishing a sidebar communication between a subset of the set of communication devices. The set of communication devices participate in the dispatch multi-party call and only the subset of communication devices participate in the sidebar communication. In an embodiment of a system of the present invention, the system includes a dispatch network and a set of communication devices in communication with the dispatch network. The dispatch network establishes a dispatch multi-party call between the set of communication devices and a sidebar communication between a subset of the set of communication devices, wherein the set of communication devices participate in the dispatch multi-party call and only the subset of communication devices participate in the sidebar communication.

Abstract: A dispatch communications system is disclosed that facilitates group dispatch communications respectively between subscriber units residing within a first geographical area, subscriber units residing within a second geographical area, and subscriber units residing respectively within the first and second geographical areas. Abstract: A private wireless network interface provides wireless signaling and protocols of a wireless macro network to allow a consumer to operate over a private wireless network. The private wireless network interface receives wireless signals compatible with a wireless macro network and transmits the signals over a broadband connection to a wireless service provider's wireless macro network. The private wireless network interface allows the use of mobile stations which are compatible with a wireless macro network to operate in a residence and have the signals backhauled over the residence's broadband connection. The private wireless network interface can provide wireless macro network coverage in any location with some type of coupling to the Internet.

Abstract: Systems and methods for providing services for stations supported by a residential gateway are provided. The residential gateway can support one or more fixed-line station and/one or more mobile stations. The mobile stations can be supported by a wireless macro network and/or the residential gateway. Services such as simultaneous ringing, distinctive ringing, call transfer, extension functionality, and the like can be provided for the mobile station and the fixed-line station.

Abstract: A method and system for conducting a dispatch multi-party communication session is disclosed. In accordance with an embodiment of a method of the present invention, the method includes establishing a dispatch multi-party communication session in a dispatch network, conducting a first portion of the session in a broadcast mode, and conducting a second portion of the session in an open mode. In accordance with an embodiment of a system of the present invention, the system includes the dispatch network wherein the network establishes a dispatch multi-party communication session and wherein the network conducts the first portion of the session in the broadcast mode and the second portion of the session in the open mode.

Abstract: Three specific problems or needs related to deployment of fiber optic repeater distributed antenna systems are addressed by providing a particularly configured enclosure or cabinet adapted to protect repeaters from vandalism, enclose power components directly below the repeaters, and provide uninhibited ventilation. The cabinet includes a first cabinet portion partially enclosing a first chamber in which the repeater is receivable, a second cabinet portion at least partially enclosing a second chamber in which the power source components are receivable, and a door mounted to the first cabinet portion so as to be movable between a closed position, in which access to the first chamber is prevented, and an open position, providing access to the first chamber. A locking mechanism by which the door can be securely retained in the closed position includes a handle which is redundantly securable in an inoperative position, thereby preventing locking mechanism operation and precluding access to the first chamber.

Abstract: A system and method of analyzing communications between a calling party and a called party is disclosed. In an embodiment of a method of the present invention, the method includes receiving a communication at a service provider network, recording the communication, analyzing a voice content portion of the recorded communication to determine if the voice content portion contains a keyword stored in a database, and forwarding the recorded communication to a law enforcement agency if the keyword is detected in the voice content portion. In an embodiment of a system of the present invention, the system includes a buffer memory for receiving a recorded communication from a service provider network and a content analysis system coupled to the buffer memory.

Abstract: A wireless communication system including an originator media gateway to encode voice data into an IP packet depending on whether tandem free operation (TFO) or normal operation is being used. The media gateway makes such determination independent of the TFO protocol being used. In particular, the media gateway determines that TFO is being used by determining whether bits in particular fields of a predetermined number N of voice octets are filler bits or not. If they are filler bits, then TFO is being used, otherwise, normal operation is being used. If TFO is being used, the media gateway forms an IP packet with data from only another particular fields of the voice octets. If normal operation is used, the media gateway forms an IP packet with data from the entire voice octets. A target media gateway determines TFO or normal operation by examining the size of the received IP packet.

Abstract: A system and method for providing subscriber presence information in a dispatch network is disclosed. In an embodiment of the method, presence subscription information related to a dispatch network subscriber is provided to a home location register. A presence message is provided to a presence server related to the subscription information. A presence status is provided to a party by the presence server. In an embodiment of the system, a home location register stores a subscriber presence table. The presence table includes presence subscription information related to a dispatch network subscriber. A dispatch application processor (DAP) is coupled to the home location register and the DAP retrieves the presence subscription information for a subscriber registered in the DAP. The DAP provides a presence message to the presence server and the presence server provides a presence status to a communications medium.
