Abstract: The present invention relates to a device and a process for estimating the noise level of video images before coding. The device comprises in particular means of storage of at least one input image, a blockwise motion estimation module, designed to produce, blockwise, first quantities representative of motion-compensated image variations, on the basis of a current input image and of at least one input image stored previously in the said means of storage, means of estimation of a global noise level for each image as a function of at least certain of the said quantities representative of motion-compensated image variations, The said device comprises means of estimation of a local noise level for each block of the image as a function of second quantities representative of motion-compensated image variations and of the global noise level.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method of processing an image of a video image sequence, wherein it comprises the following successive steps: a step for computing a complexity value representative of the complexity of said image; a first step of morphological processing applied on said image, said first step generating a first processed image; a second step for mixing said image and said first processed image depending on said complexity value, said second step generating a mixed image; a third step of morphological processing applied on said mixed image, said third step generating a second processed image; and a fourth step for mixing said mixed image and said second processed image depending on said complexity value.

Abstract: A device and a method for coding video images by motion compensation. The device incorporates a coding unit and a filtering unit. A calculation unit for calculating a recursivity coefficient as a function of an estimated noise level and a prediction error, a measurement unit for measuring the intra-image correlation and the inter-image correlation, a selection unit for selecting a type of coding applied to the current input image as a function at least of the measurements of the inter-image correlation and of the measurements of the intra-image correlation and as a function of the estimated noise level, a coding unit for coding the current input image as a function of the type of coding selected.
