  • Patent number: 6206381
Abstract: A metal gasket is disclosed in which a sealing stress exerted on a deck-surface from any one of confronting bead plates is dispersed slantwise along the direction leaving its associated cylinder bore aperture so that the cylinder bores are protected from deformation owing to the high sealing stress occurring in the open-end portions of the cylinder bores. The bead plates have sealing beads confronting flanges of an first intermediate plates at their borderlines smaller radially of their associated cylinder bore apertures while confronting the first intermediate plate, less in thickness than the flanges, at their borderlines larger radially of their associated apertures. The sealing stress on the deck-surfaces of the cylinder block and cylinder liner due to deformation of the beads may be dispersed uniformly over the flanges to thereby reduce the influence of the sealing stress on the liner section of the cylinder liner.

  • Patent number: 6164662
Abstract: An engine gasket flattens the surface pressure occurring around holes, prevents the occurrence of impressions in and damage to a cylinder block and a cylinder head, and secures a stable sealing performance. This metal gasket has elastic metal plates and an intermediate metal plate interposed between these elastic metal plates. The elastic metal plates are provided with full beads along the circumferences of the holes so that the ridge portions of the full beads contact the intermediate metal plate. The intermediate plate has, on regions which are between the holes and full beads of the elastic metal plates, half beads extending toward the elastic metal plates. The elastic metal plates are folded back along the circumferences of the holes.

  • Patent number: 6135459
Abstract: In this metal gasket, the stopper plate stacked on the bead base plates has its reduced thickness portionwhose thickness is smaller than the thickness of the stopper plate body-folded back to form a stopper portion. This structure provides the stopper portion with a limited stopper function with fewer parts. Between a pair of bead base plates that seal around the bore holes of the metal gasket is clamped an intermediate plate as the stopper plate. Around the bore holes in the intermediate plate are arranged folded portions, whose total thickness is larger than the thickness of the stopper plate body, to restrict the deformation of the beads. The folded portions are formed by folding back fold parts onto base parts that are thinner than the stopper plate body. This structure can limit the step height (stopper height) of the intermediate plate without using other parts such as metal plates or stopper pieces.

  • Patent number: 5879011
Abstract: This metal gasket comprises a beaded base plate, an intermediate plate and a thin plate, and secures a stable long-standing sealing performance with a face-to-face pressure balance kept properly. This metal gasket is provided with full beads on the beaded base plate, stopper beads on the intermediate plate, and folded portions, which hold the edge portions of bores of the intermediate plate, and full beads, which are laminated on the stopper beads on the intermediate plate, on the thin plate. The folded portions are formed so that they are not laminated on the stopper beads when the metal gasket is in practical use, i.e., when the folded portions are in a compressed condition. The folded portions and stopper beads display a stopper function of preventing the full compression of the full beads on the beaded base plate, and a sealing function of preventing the entry of a combustion gas into the clearances defined by the full beads.

  • Patent number: 5794945
Abstract: This metal gasket comprises a bead base plate with first beads and a sub-plate stacked on the bead base plate. The sub-plate is made of a thick metal plate and formed with second and third beads and stepped portions. The second beads, the third beads and the stepped portions combine to form triple seal lines, which improve the sealing function. The sub-plate is formed with the second beads opposing the first beads of the bead base plate, with the high third beads formed inside the second beads around the holes and with the stepped portions formed outside the second beads around the holes. The third beads prevent ingress of burning gases to the first beads and also serve as a stopper to prevent the first beads from being flattened completely. The third beads therefore can add durability to the sealing function realized by the first and second beads, enhancing the sealing performance of the first and second beads and reliably preventing burning gases from escaping between the opposing surfaces.

  • Patent number: 5690343
Abstract: In this metal gasket, the beads formed on an intermediate plate prevent a full compression of bead plates and improve the sealability of the gasket. This metal gasket comprises first and second bead plates having main beads extending along the circumferences of holes, and an intermediate plate interposed between the first and second bead plates. The intermediate plate is provided in the regions thereof which are between the holes and the main bead-contacting portions thereof with beads opposed to the first bead plate, and these beads form compensating portions for the first bead plate. The second bead plate is provided with auxiliary beads having projecting portions engageable with the recessed portions of the beads on the intermediate plate. The compensating portions mentioned above prevent a full compression of the beads on the bead plates when the metal gasket is tightened, and offset the irregularity of the opposed surfaces of a cylinder head and a cylinder block.

The intermediate plate is provided on the parts thereof which are closer to the combustion chamber holes than to the beads on the bead plates with stopper portions comprising stepped portions. These stopper portions constitute compensation portions for the beads on the bead plates. The compensation portions prevent a total compression of the beads on the bead plates when the metal gasket is tightened, offset the irregularity of opposed surfaces of a cylinder head and a cylinder block, improve the sealability with respect to the beads, and protect the beads against corrosion and compression.
