Patent number: 7651167Abstract: A fitting for a vehicle incorporates a backrest and a removable seat squab so that the fitting may be used as a conventional seat, or as a safety fitting to engage a rear of a wheelchair. The backrest is wider at the top than at a lower point, to enable the handles of a relatively narrow wheelchair to pass on either side of the backrest. The backrest is mounted on a supporting frame by a pivotal link mechanisms enabling the backrest to move forwardly so that an electric wheelchair, or other wheelchair that has a rearwardly extending portion towards the back lower part of the wheelchair may be accommodated with the back of the wheelchair in engagement with the backrest of the fitting. The fitting is mounted for lateral movement, the fitting being supported on a base plate which can move laterally on a floor-mounted platform to enable a wheelchair to be manoeuvred easily past the fitting.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 2003Date of Patent: January 26, 2010Assignee: NMI Safety Systems Ltd.Inventor: Michael Barry Sawdy

Patent number: 7641257Abstract: A seating arrangement is provided in a vehicle to enable a wheelchair occupier to be carried safely in the vehicle, whilst having only a minimal effect on the total number of passengers that can be carried. The seating arrangement includes two adjacent seats, one adjacent the side of the vehicle and the other adjacent the aisle of the vehicle. The seat adjacent the side of the vehicle can be moved from a first position to a second position in which a clear space exists on the side of the second seat which is remote from the aisle. The second seat has a seat squab which is moveable to a position in which the seat squab does not obstruct the space in front of the back-rest of the seat, and the second seat is moveable laterally towards the side of the vehicle and axially of the vehicle.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 2006Date of Patent: January 5, 2010Assignee: NMI Safety Systems Ltd.Inventor: Michael Sawdy

Publication number: 20090000087Abstract: A retaining arrangement for securing an object to a surface includes a retaining element which is moveable between a stowed position and a retaining position. The retaining element is substantially level with, or below, the level of the surface. The retaining element protrudes from the surface and presents at least one elongate retaining slot above the surface which is substantially parallel with the surface, into which a part of an object to be retained maybe inserted. The retaining slot is at least partially formed by a retaining surface of the retaining element, the retaining surface facing, when the retaining element is in the retaining position, in a direction having at least a component that extends towards the plane of the surface in the vicinity of the retaining element.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 30, 2008Publication date: January 1, 2009Applicant: NMI SAFETY SYSTEMS LTD.Inventor: Michael Barry SAWDY

Patent number: 6357715Abstract: A seat support for use with a vehicle seat and adapted to engage a floor-mounted track, the track having two inwardly directed lips on opposed sides of a slot. The seat support has a framework to support the seat, and which is provided with a clamping mechanism to engage the lips of the track. The clamping mechanism has two spaced apart plates, with the spaced apart plates having inwardly inclined lower regions. The lower edge of each plate carries an outwardly directed flange. A mechanism is provided to move the lower regions outwardly against an inherent resistance bias provided by the plates from an initial position in which the flanges may be inserted between the lips of the track to an outer clamping position in which the flanges engage the lips of the track. A knife element is mounted between the plates and is adapted to be moved between an upper position and a lower clamping position.Type: GrantFiled: March 8, 2000Date of Patent: March 19, 2002Assignee: NMI Safety Systems, Ltd.Inventor: Michael Barry Sawdy
